Burn2 2021: The Great Unknown in Second Life

Burn2 2021

Burn2 2021 opens its gates at 17:00 SLT on Friday, October 8th, 2021 and will run through until Sunday, October 17th, 2021. Possibly as a result of the 2020 event proving so popular amongst Burning Man veterans – that event went virtual due to the pandemic – this year’s Burn2 Octoburn is taking place over a total of 12 regions, double the usual number. Thus, there are more camps, more builds and more things to see and do.

The theme for this year’s event is The Great Unknown, once again matching the core theme of Burning Man, and the organisers of that event describe the theme in these terms:

This year’s Burning Man theme is an invitation to emerge from our collective isolation, to explore the unfamiliar contours of a changed world, and to reimagine ourselves, our community, and our culture in ways that might not have been possible before this period of plague and pause. After a long year adrift in the Multiverse, beset by angst and uncertainty, it’s time to climb up out of our escape pods and look outside to see where we’ve landed. On top of a mountain, like Noah? At the bottom of a rabbit hole, like Alice? Or are we on a vast and endless plain, ringed by ancient mountains, the sort of unfathomable territory that once caused mapmakers to throw up their hands and write “here be dragons” at the margins of the known world?

And so it is that the eleven regions spread before and to either side of “base camp” at Burning Man Deep Hole have been given names designed to encourage camp and plot builders to go beyond the limits of everyday expression and into the cosmos of the imagination and those landscapes of the mind labelled Here Be Dragons and realms unmarked by borders or the constraints of the mundane.

Burn2 2021: Stoner Park

The Great Unknown will formally start with a “soft” opening featuring the Lamplighters, who will lead a procession through the event regions. Activities will then kick-off at 18:00 with music across the three event stages of Main, Bob, and Centre Camp. Details of all activities and entertainment can be found in the Burn 2 Event Calendar. Note that some of the individual plots may also be hosting their own events and entertainment.

As is traditional, the burning of The Man and the Temple will occur at 12:00 noon SLT on Saturday, October 16th, and Sunday October 17th, 2021 respectively.

When visiting, people can explore the regions in multiple ways: on foot, via balloon, and the familiar Department of Mutant Vehicles cars, whilst for the environmentally minded, horse are also available for riding. Also, the greeters at the main landing point have backpackers – clicking these backpacks will provide you with an inventory folder packed with info about the event, including landmarks to key points of interest.

Burn2 2020: The Metaverse in Second Life

Burn2 2020

Burn2 2020 opened its gates at 17:00 SLT on Friday, October 9th and is currently in full swing with daily event scheduled throughout the week that will culminate over the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th October with the burning of the Man and the Temple respectively, before the event closes with a final party that kicks-off at 23:00 SLT on Sunday, October 18th.

This year’s event is a little different to past Burn2 activities, thanks to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The latter pushed all of the Burning Man events from the physical world to the virtual, as the Burn2 organisers note in introducing this October event:

Traditionally, Burn2 “echoes” the annual event in Black Rock City, Nevada. This year, however, things are different. Burning Man went virtual, the Multiverse populated by eight “recognised universes.” Burn2 was one of those, with a VRC Week event in the beginning of September, featuring just a bit of what a virtual Burn is like in Deep Hole.
Now…in October, we shall go all out!
Burn2 2020

This means that a total of six regions once again provide a setting that reflects the actual Burning Man event, but are this time especially welcoming to Burners from around the world who  were not able to attend the physical event, who can share the creativity and atmosphere virtually and immersively. To reflect this, the Burn2 landing / arrival zone includes a short tutorial on using the viewer for those new to Second Life, and greeters are especially attuned to assisting those who are unfamiliar with the platform and with Burn2.

Also reflecting the “virtual universe” idea of this year’s Burning Man event, Burn2 has been given the theme of the Metatverse, with builders and participants invited to present builds and camps that reflect the idea of multiple universes in which life might find itself – be they spiritual, fictional, of time and space, extroverted or introspective.

As usual, there are entertainments and activities taking place throughout the week, with the aforementioned Man and Temple burns taking scheduled to take place twice (and respectively) at 12:00 and 18:00 SLT on the 17th and 18th of October. Full details of the burns and all activities throughout the rest of the event can be found in the event schedule on Google Calendar.

BURN2 2019: Metamorphoses in Second Life

Burn2 2019: The Man

Burn2 2019 opens its gates at 17:00 SLT on Friday, October 11th, and will run through until midnight on Sunday, October 20th 2019, culminating in the burning of the Man the Temple on the closing weekend of the event.

The theme for this year is Metamorphoses, and is described thus:

Many cultures of the world have mythologies about transformations, or as the Greeks and Romans called them, metamorphoses.

In today’s world maybe humans are not turned into animals and frogs don’t become princes when kissed. But transformations can happen for a person or collectively for a group and these metamorphoses can have a powerful effect on our lives.

We invite you to immerse yourself in transformative experiences, explore the ideas and thoughts and dreams of creatives around you at Burn2.

Burn2 2019: The Temple

A week of activities have been planned for the event, including music, dancing, lamplighters processions and – of course – the burning of The Man (Saturday, October 19th at 12:00 noon SLT) and The Temple (Sunday, October 20th, 12:00 noon SLT).  You can keep track of all BURN2 activities through the event schedule on Google Calendar.

To ease your explorations of the regions, don’t forget you can pick up a ride at the Department of Mutant Vehicles, car rezzing point close to the welcome area, and there are balloon rides to be had, while the festival volunteers can point you in the right direction and  / or give you note cards listing the camps and points of interest.

As with previous years, participants have fully entered into the spirit of the BURN2 theme, and the regions offer a tremendous carnival atmosphere.

BURN2 Conception 2019 announced for Second Life

On June 29th, the BURN2 team announced the dates and theme for the BURN2 Conception 2019 event – and with them comes an invitation for builders and performers  to get involved.

Conception this year will take place on the weekend of Friday, July 19th through Sunday July 21st,  with the theme Communal Earth.

The BURN2 announcement of the event describes the theme thus:

At Conception we look back to the roots of our regional in SL, reaching back to Burning Man. How the years have flown by! Our past event themes often relate to the Earth – Fertility, Balance. Our virtual Regional is comprised of Burners from across the world and all of us are concerned about the damage to the planet, and the realisation that the cause of it is us. Recovery from the damage must also begin with us.

Established and novice builders are invited to participate in the event and place their creations on the dusty Deep Hole playa. Novice builders or those unfamiliar with BURN2 builds can attend the BURN2 building classes. Those interested in applying for the event should read the building guidelines that can be viewed via the application form.

What is this theme about? It’s a concept around the communal effort needed to remember the origin of Earth and for everyone on the planet to preserve and heal it. We remember our roots, the first stirrings of life, and how we got from there to here, and recognise the impact our existence has had on our mother Earth. There is no magic bullet, no single solution to solve all the Earth’s problems. Therefore, it is on all of us, each in our different ways that we can do, to find and apply healing. In the process, we will see that we are all in this together.

– from the BURN2 press release for Conception 2019

Performers – DJs, live singers and performing groups – are also invited to participate in Conception. Those interested should read the performance guidelines on the Performer’s Sign-up Page.

BURN2: Burnal Equinox 2019

Burn2 Burnal Equinox 2019

The Burn2 Burnal Exquinox event, which will run through until Sunday, April 14th, is now open. This is the traditional Burn2 event held midway between the annual October “big Burn” events year-by-year. For 2019, the theme of the event is Eyes to the Skies. Tied in with the annual global Yuri’s Night event, it is a celebration of space, “the final frontier” (or “great beyond”) and all that goes with it – science, mysticism and more.

The weekend kicked-off on Friday, April 12th, courtesy of a live set of electronic music by Hao Zaytsev, and the marking of Yuri’s Night. This is an annual celebration of the first human flight in to space, completed by cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin. He lifted-off from from Baikonur Cosmodrome atop his Vostok 1 booster on April 12th 1961 to become not only the first human to reach space, but the first to orbit the Earth in a flight lasting 108 minutes. On his return, he actually completely his flight via parachute, the mission calling for him to eject from the capsule prior to landing. Since 2011, the date of his flight has been celebrated as the “World’s Space Party”.

via Burn2.org

Gagarin’s flight is marked on the Playa by a model of his Vostok K rocket, steaming with vented gasses as if awaiting launch, the Vostok 1 capsule sitting within its launch shroud sitting atop the rocket. It is just one of a number of installations both on the ground and in the air directly over the Playa awaiting exploration, which celebrate space flight, astronomy, science fiction, extraterrestrials, and more.

The full schedule for the weekend available on the Burn2 website. Highlights include:

  • Changhigh Sisters Fireshow – Saturday, April 13th, noon SLT
  • Burn/Fire Dancers, Sunday, April 14th, 10:00 and 16:00 SLT.
  • Burn2 Fashionistas, Sunday, April 14th, 14:00 SLT.
  • DRUM, Sunday, April 14th, 15:00 SLT.

And there will be live performers and DJ sets through both days. The event closes at 23:00 SLT on Sunday, April 13th.

BURN2: Burnal Equinox 2018

BURN2 Burnal Equinox 2018

The Burn2 Burnal Exquinox event, which will run through until Sunday, March 25th, is now open.

The theme for this year’s event is H2O = Water but H2+O -> Fire, with the press release for the event explaining the theme thus:

It is in two parts. The first we all know, that H2O represents WATER. But…the second part is not a chemical formula; rather it is an attempt to describe the process of combustion that results in FIRE. Both utilise hydrogen and oxygen, but manifest in different ways.

Just as these two gases – oxygen and hydrogen can be combined to form very different basic elements  – water and fire – so the theme hopes to promote the idea that the sum of two or more things is very often something more – and that the “more” can be very different depending on how things are combined. Thus, through the imaginative bringing together of the core elements of a BURN2 event – building, art, and music – by different eyes and hands across the Playa, the organisers hope BURN2 participants will create a celebratory weekend that both reflects and is greater than all of its parts.
