OnLive offers SL Go users with an active subscription a free month

SL go logoImportant note: The SL Go service is to be shut down on April 30th, 2015. For more information, please read this report.

If you’re an SL Go user, you’ve probably already seen the e-mail, but just in case you haven’t…

The company has been writing to all SL Go users to let them know that an issue in the SL Go Second Life Viewer (SLV) currently prevents teleporting (although the problem doesn’t affect the Firestorm viewer on SL Go). “SLV had been running fine for months,” SL Go Product Manager Dennis Harper informed me. “Then all of a sudden… people can’t TP!”

Why this should have happened is unclear. Nothing has been changed at OnLive’s end to cause the problem, and while the Lab has also been involved in investigations, no reason or solution has yet been determined.

As a result, OnLive pro-actively sought to contact all users with an active subscription and offer them a free month’s subscription to the service, as noted in the official e-mail, which reads in part:

We understand your frustration and apologize for the inconvenience. We will give all SL Go subscribers a free month of SL Go to make up for time lost. The next time your subscription renews, you will not be charged.
Our goal is to continuously improve the SL Go experience. We are committed to our community in Second Life and hope that you will continue to enjoy the benefits of SL Go.

Note that the offer applies to all SL Go users with an active subscription at the time the e-mail was sent, regardless of whether you prefer to use the SL Viewer or Firestorm with the service – so while the teleport issue may be a nuisance, there is something of a silver lining to the problem, thanks to OnLive’s commitment to their users.

There’s also further good news on the horizon. Not only are OnLive working as hard as possible with the Lab to fix the issue, they’re also in the process of preparing to update the SL Viewer to the most recent viewer code released by the Lab. No date is yet available for when the update will occur (as OnLive understandably want to get the current problem fixed first), but Dennis assures me they’re keen to see it deployed – I’ll hopefully have more on this in the near future.

About SL Go

SL Go is a streaming service provided to Second life users by OnLive. A subscription-based service providing the means to access Second Life from a low-end PC or Mac computer,  or via and Android tablet or an iPad with the full graphical riches of a Second life viewer running on a high-end computer. In addition, Firestorm for SL Go (currently only available for PCs and Macs) allows the same degree of rich graphics access to OpenSim grids.

If you have a need to access Second Life while away from your main computer, or if you have a low-end system on which you might like to run Second Life with all of its graphical richness, SL Go might well be worth a look. To find out more, and take a free 7-day trial with the service, follow this link.

If you already have an SL Go account, don’t forget use can also get information through the in-world SL Go support group (profile link) in Second Life.

Addendum on the Issue: At the TPV Developer meeting on Friday, January 30th, Oz Linden confirmed that as a part of on-going investigations, the Lab’s QA team have turned up the logging and have been testing the service themselves in order to generate stats on the failures.

They believe they have found the point where things go “really wrong”, which lies within the handshaking between the two simulators involved in the teleport attempt. However, what remains unknown is precisely what is going wrong between the SL Go SLV, and the simulators in order for the simulator / simulator messaging to go so wrong. OnLive’s engineers are also trying to isolate any possible cause for the issue (which does not affect users running Firestorm on SL Go) as well.

Firestorm’s Tool Tip Tuesday

firestorm-logoFirestorm is renowned not only for being Second Life’s most popular viewer, but also for the degree of end-user support provided by the viewer team. With multiple language support groups, in-world classes, a wiki, an in-world support regions, and so on, Firestorm offer users a broad range of support options.

On Tuesday, January 27th, Firestorm added to all of this with a new feature on their You Tube channel,  entitled “Tool Tip Tuesday”.  In launching the feature, Firestorm Project Manager Jessica lyon describes it thus:

Firestorm has so many features and functions most folks don’t even know about that we decided to do a series of short videos showcasing a hidden or lesser-known feature once a week.

The first of the new videos is just over six minutes in length and provides tips on  getting more out of the camera, and short cuts which may help make using the camera easier. The tips include:

  • Use of the SHIFT and the CTRL/CMD keys with the mouse scroll wheel (if you have one!) to assist in camera movement / placement
  • Keyboard options to help with camera placement (e.g. CTRL-0, etc.)
  • Use of the main camera floaters (default and Phototools)
  • Saving and loading a sorted camera position (which may not be quite what you think it is!).

So why not take a look at the first video in the series and keep a note of Tip Tool Tuesday? Even if you don’t use Firestorm, you may be surprised by what you find.

While it is all over Twitter, it’s probably worth pointing out that as well as hiring for their new platform, the Lab is also still hiring people specifically to work on Second Life.

Server Deployments – Week 4 Recap

  • There was no Main (SLS) channel deployment during the week
  • On Thursday, January 22nd, the RC channels were updated as follows:
    • LeTigre and Magnum received the same server maintenance package which included a fix for BUG-8223, introduced to all three RC channels in the week #3 deployment
    • BlueSteel received a server maintenance package which contained the same fix for BUG-8223 and also support for the new Avatar Hover Height capability

SL Viewer – Avatar Hover Height

The Avatar Hover Height project viewer was released on Wednesday, January 21st, however, an issue with the SL wiki means that it currently cannot be reached via the Alternate Viewers wiki page, which is currently showing an out-of-date listing. Those wishing to download the viewer can do so from here.

For details on Avatar Hover Height in general, please refer to my overview.

Other Items

SL Wiki

The ability for users to edit SL wiki pages was re-enabled on Thursday, January 22nd, after an extended period in which they were only editable by Lab personnel. However, whether the two are connected or not, but subsequent to the wiki being opened for editing, a number of pages appeared to revert to earlier versions or became inaccessible (e.g. the Alternate Viewers wiki page reverted to a version from late December 2014, while the pages for the RC channel release notes were replaced by blank pages).

The Lab is obviously aware of the issue, and looking into it.

CDN News

The Lab has been / is testing an additional CDN provider (to Highwinds, whom they currently use). It’s not clear where the testing is going, and when asked about it at the Server Beta User Group (SBUG) meeting on Thursday January 22nd, Simon linden could only say, “it was going to allow a lot more flexibility so we could have different regions on different CDNs … or something similar.   It might have been different areas of the world on different CDNs.”

Doubtless, if / when the project moves forward, we’ll get to hear more.

And on a Lighter Note

On Monday, January 19th, people started reporting that an old group logo – Whore Couture – was appearing in place of assorted group’s usual logo, as shown in the image below, taken from BUG-8255, “Whore Couture Logo Appearing on Several Groups”, where the problem was formally reported.

BUG-8255 reported the random appearance of an old Sl brand logo - Whore couture - appearing in place of various group's usual logo
BUG-8255 reported the random appearance of an old SL brand logo – Whore couture – appearing in place of various group’s usual logo

The cause of the problem was later revealed by Soft Linden:

An engineer grabbed a random group’s image as a placeholder and put it in place of an old asset ID that was used as the default image for many groups. It was meant as a temporary measure while he was doing some other texture work. Unfortunately, he didn’t look at the image he selected and I expect he would have chosen plywood instead if he had.

The image has been removed, but it may take some time before that propagates through the CDN and viewer caches.

Don’t worry, we’re not going to let him live this down. In the mean time, we’re building some better process around this.

Kokua 3.7.24: from RLVa to RLV

kokua-logoNicky Perian and the Kokua team announced the release of version 3.7.24.35047 on Tuesday, January 20th.

This updates primarily focuses on code merges with the more recent Linden Lab code base updates, and changes to the viewer’s RLV support.

The Linden code base updates mean that Kokua is up-to-date with the the following updates from the Lab:

  • Release 3.7.21 – Snowstorm Fall Contributions – Japanese input; improved rendering of projectors; fixes for object editing bug when rotating and for crash on exit on OS X Yosemite in full screen mode, etc.
  • Release 3.7.22 – GPU Benchmark start-up crash fix release
  • Release 3.7.23 –  Maintenance release – bugfixes and improvements to many areas of SL and fixes to previously released changes in the way we handle joint offsets in rigged meshes
  • Release 3.7.24 –  HTTP Pipelining enhancements – reduced pipelined texture and mesh fetching timeout so that stalled connections fail quickly allowing earlier retry. Timeout value changed from 150 seconds to 60 seconds

RLVa to RLV Update

This release sees Kokua pivot away from the use of RLVa viewer code for RLV support and to using Marine Kelley’s own RLV support, as presented through her Restrained Love Viewer. Due to unavoidable events, RLV/a has fallen somewhat behind support for the more recent RLV features, and as Marine tracks the Lab’s releases through her own viewer, this switch should make RLV-related maintenance easier for the Kokua team.

As a result of this change, a clean install of Kokua is recommended, the blog post accompanying the release noting:

[The] Recommendation for a clean install is because of the different settings presented by having RLV versus RLVa in the last Kokua release … If you do not clean install you may experience a notification at viewer start about restarting to change RLV mode because the default is set to RLV off and settings in your local setting file is RLV on. You will need select off/on once more in order to sync the on/off selection. This can be avoided with a clean install.

The default behaviour for RLV is that it will not be present (i.e. it must be enabled via the Advanced menu).

Additional Bug Fixes

In addition, the Kokua team have included the fixes for the following issues:

  • Opensim variable size region mini-map shows the base 256×256 region only Ticket #276
  • Move view floater does not persist at relog Ticket #286, resolved at Ticket #318
  • [RLVa] Names are not all gone Ticket #314
  • Touch restriction works not very well in RLV or RLVa Ticket #324
  • Right click an attached object brings up pie and context menu Ticket #325 Added
  • Typing module in the tag Ticket #313
