Hotel Del Salto in Second Life

Recently opened in Second Life is a new Homestead region designed by Jade Koltai. An experienced region designer in her own right, Jade also used to work with Serene Footman in producing some of the most extraordinary builds in Second Life based on physical world locations. With this latest build, she further demonstrates her skill in bringing places from around the globe to life in the virtual.

Hotel De Salto is a region based on the hotel located in San Antonio del Tequendama, Colombia some 30 km south-west of Bogotá. It sits alongside the Salto del Tequendama (Tequendama Falls),a 157m high waterfall that drops into a deep gorge.

According to a legend of the Muisca people of the Andean plateau, the waterfall was created by Bochica, who used his staff to break the rock and release the water that covered the Bogotá Savannah. In their language, Chibcha, the name means “he who precipitated downward”, and stems from a further legend in which the Muisca were said to escape subjugation by the Spanish conquistadors by jumping off the falls to become eagles, flying to their freedom.

The hotel actually started life in 1923 as a mansion built by architect Carlos Arturo Tapias along French lines and intended to celebrate the wealth and elegance of the country’s elite. It continued in the role for several years, undergoing expansion which also saw it converted into its luxury hotel, which opened to customers in 1928.

The hotel operated for 50 years, drawing tourists from across the world to it. Some were attracted by its unique views, others by a darker desire. Drawn by the tale of the Muisca legend of people leaping from the falls to become eagles, the broken-hearted came to the hotel to leap to their deaths from the cliffs beside it.

However, by the 1970s, the hotel was facing issues. Bogotá had grown exponentially in the intervening years, and without all the necessary supporting infrastructure; the result was much of the city’s raw sewage entered local river to make its way down to the Tequendama Falls and the gorge below the hotel, contaminating it. At the same it, an upstream hydroelectric dam was built on the main Bogotá River, which often starved the impressive falls of water, reducing them to trickling dribbles dropping into the gorge from above.

These factors saw trade at the hotel decline from the late 1970s through until its closure in the early 1990s. For a brief time during the hotel’s decline there was talk of renovating it, but for come 15 or so years it was left to moulder in the high Andean forests and weather – a forbidden place, rich in legend.

Then in 2011 the National University of Colombia’s Institute of Natural Sciences joined with the Ecological Farm Foundation of Porvenir to launch extensive renovations of the hotel, turning it into a cultural museum. The first exhibition at the new museum, Caverns, ecosystems of the subterranean world, opened in 2013.

For her build, Jade offers both a homage to, and interpretation of, the hotel during those years when it lay abandoned. As with the original, it sits atop a deep gorge, facing the Tequendama Falls on the region’s north side.

The shelf on which it sits is perhaps broader that that occupied by the actual Hotel Del Salto, which means some of the on-the-edge grandeur of the original is lost, but there is no mistaking the architectural style that has been captured by this interpretation.

The building is overgrown, vines hanging within mouldy rooms like drapes, furnishings braking and rotting as a result of the humidity no doubt brought about by the heat and damp, the terrace around it broken and given over to weeds and 50’s style cars. Like the original, stairs descend the cliffs below the hotel, although these don’t pass any basement levels. Instead they provide access to a bridge spanning the gorge, and further stairs down to the floor of the gorge, where ancient ruins lay, offering the suggestion of a place perhaps once belonging to the Muisca.

Throughout the build can be found numerous platforms and seating points intended to provide places from which the hotel and the gorge with its falls – presented in full spate – can be appreciated. Adding to the setting are wheeling birds, a rich sense of forest, parrots and toucans,  while the sound scape gives incredible depth to the region’s visual splendour.

Completed by a region surround that strongly evokes the Andean uplands of Colombia to provide the perfect backdrop, this is a build fully deserving of a visit and in spending time exploring.

Officially open from Tuesday, May 5th at Nitroglobus Roof Gallery curated by Dido Haas, is Entropy, by EmberPolaris.

In terms of thermodynamics, entropy is defined as:

A measure of the unavailable energy in a closed thermodynamic system that is also usually considered to be a measure of the system’s disorder, that is a property of the system’s state, and that varies directly with any reversible change in heat in the system and inversely with the temperature of the system.

More informally, entropy is referred to as a general running down of the universe into a state of disorder. For her exhibition, Ember presents an almost Shakespearian view of modern life; one in which we might as a well be mannequins, we have so little little say in the fate of the universe as a whole; that all we say and do, all that we build, is merely a stage for the greater passage of life – ours and the universe’s.

It is a stark, but captivating view of things; one that might be referred to as emphasising the futility of life. But there is more here; through the use of mannequins in place of humans, Entropy folds within it question of identity – not only who we are or might be, but also a challenge as to what our role in life might be when framed against the bigger backdrop of the universe’s slow passing.

More then this, through the framing of each picture is a reminder that creation – and creativity – can offer a richness of beauty that far surpasses any darkness that might otherwise be inherent in these pictures: sunlight falling through the scaffolding of an advertising hoarding, Shadows falling across an alleyway or a sudden bright splash of colour amidst the grey; sunlight falling through clouds. 

There is a stark beauty within these pieces that is astonishing; life is present in every image, the use of mannequins as models notwithstanding; a vitality that stands in contrast to the basic meaning of entropy. There is also, conversely, the suggestion of disorder that is entirely in keeping with the precepts of entropy; it surrounds and enfolds the sense of order also suggested elements present in these pictures and their sense of structure and order of life as can be witnessed in the settings for many of these images.

Those Entropy is a richly layered exhibit, offering multiple commentaries on life, the universe, and our place within it, as well as presenting rich images in and of themselves.An excellent first-time exhibition from an artist I hope we’ll see more of in the future.

2020 Simulator User Group week #19 summary

The following notes were taken at the Simulator User Group meeting held on Tuesday, May 5th. Not a lot to report; most of the meeting was general chat about wish-lists for alternatives / updates to LSL, general commentary on animations and enquiries about the CEF viewer related to the Adult Swim event (see:Adult Swim special streaming event in Second Life).

Simulator Deployments

Please refer to the simulator deployment thread for updates.

  • On Tuesday, May 5th, the majority of the grid was updated to server maintenance release 540928, first deployed on Wednesday, April 29th, and comprising an update to the simulator build tools.
  • On Wednesday, May 6th. there should be a single RC deployment. Server update 541440 again comprises updates to fix issues with the Name Change feature still calling avatars by their “old” names for up to a week, together with some internal logging changes and improvements to how the simulator accesses internal servers, and a fix to llBase64ToInteger, the colour space LSL functions.

SL Viewer

On Monday, May 4th, the Zirbenz Maintenance RC viewer,version 6.4.1.540593 and dated April 27th, 2020, was promoted to de facto release viewer status.

Adult Swim special streaming event in Second Life

In what has to be the most curious event to reach Second Life is a while, Linden Lab has teamed up with Adult Swim, the American adult-oriented night-time programming block of the children’s basic cable network Cartoon Network to stream four episodes of The Shivering Truth at a special in-world event.

For those not familiar with it, The Shivering Truth is a stop-motion animated surrealist anthology sketch comedy television series, featuring the voice talents of creator Vernon Chatman, together with cast members such as Janeane Garofalo, Trey Parker, Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Zack Pearlman, Maria Bamford, Conner O’Malley, David Cross, Martha Plimpton, and Peter Serafinowicz.

The Second Life event will take place on Friday, May 8th, 2020, starting at 16:00 SLT. It is to comprise two episodes from the first season of The Shivering Truth, followed by two episodes from the show’s second season, which will start airing in the United States on Sunday, May 10th, 2020.

The in-world streaming will take place in-world at a special location created for the event, with the Lab noting:

During the event, you can chat with fellow fans of the show and other special guests as you experience the show together for the first time in the virtual world. Free limited-edition virtual gifts and mementos will also be distributed during and after the show — just look for the “Free Gifts” kiosk near the front entrance.

Exclusive Adult Swim Second Life Event, Linden Lab, May 5th, 2020

The showing is open to anyone to attend – details below – however, those attending will need to be running the special CEF (Chrome embedded Framework) viewer issued as a release candidate on Thursday, April 30th. This viewer will help with streaming content on more sites in general, with the Lab further noting:

The event also marks the first media partnership utilising the new limited-release Second Life Viewer, which enables content creators and entertainment companies to broadcast live video events to virtual world audiences. In the future, you may see several new forms of entertainment including movie and TV premiers, live concerts, and artist/fan meet-and-greets. We’re very excited to partner with Adult Swim for the début of this new feature, which we plan to integrate into the main Second Life Viewer release in the coming weeks.

Those wishing to be a part of the event can do so as follows (again, as per the Lab’s blog post):

  • Download the CEF RC viewer and install it ahead of the event. Note that other viewers will not  be compatible with the live stream during the screening event.
  • On the day of the event, this link can be used to teleport to the venue from 15:30 SLT. Early attendance is recommended, as seating is extremely limited.

For those unable to make the premier, the programme will be repeated hourly through until 21:00 SLT on Friday, May 8th.

To help promote the event and steer non-SL users to the in-world venue, the Lab has launched a special Second Life landing page focused on it, and which provides further information on the event and the sneak peek video of the venue, embedded at the end of this article.

The choice of Adult Swim to premier a new service / option that is clearly intended to appeal to an audience of potential interested partners from outside Second Life is an interesting one.

Certainly, similar events held in Sansar (notably around the Star Trek franchise, which have seen cast members from the various Trek incarnations, as well as writers and other backstage crew, mixing it with users and fans at meet-and-greet / QA sessions, proved to be an popular means of drawing people into that platform – if not necessarily retaining them as engaged users. So it will be interesting to see who else the Lab has lined up for such events / streaming activities like this is the future, and what the response is among SL users and non-users alike.

A Fairelands Journey: Lunafae

Fantasy Faire 2020: Lunafae

From the high mountains around Auxentios’ Pass, we at length descended to warmer lands. For the first part of our journey down from that strange, steam-powered town nestled in its high pass, we were led by one of the clanking, hissing machines that so startled and amazed us on first seeing them.

Driven by man sitting in a closet-like space below the rounded belly of the mechanical beast, the machine walked with a clumsy, yet sure-footed grace in response to the levers he pulled and pushed. A second man seated before him in that iron closet used the long funnel extending before it to blast our path with steam that cleared away the frost and ice, allowing us safe passage over the smooth rock that might otherwise have been as treacherous as glass beneath feet and hooves.

Even after the machine had stood aside to let us continue down warmer slopes towards the tree line below, it was hard not to keep looking back up the hard rock path to try to catch sight of our strange companion, even though we all knew we had left it behind and the echoing sound of its heavy footfalls echoed down to us as it made its way back up to its home in the snows.

Fantasy Faire 2020: Lunafae

As the day passed, so we came to the green lands beneath the mountains, and to the gardens of Lunafae.  Here, built around a natural grass basin, the fae folk had established a home. We arrived as the Sun passed behind the mountains and the Moon slowly rose to the east. As it did so, life began to stir among the oval and round houses that ringed the basin, translucent orbs hung from arches and sitting upon stone pedestals lighting the paths and gardens within the circle of houses with the captured moonlight, while fireflies danced over the round of water that sat at the lowest heart of the basin. 

So too came the sound of voices, as strong and fair as any among the elves – and also small and sweet as children at play; bright, happy laughter that I could not trace until tall, silvan folk stepped forth in greeting, more fireflies dancing around them. As they approached, so I realised that the “fireflies” were tiny faefolk, no taller than the length of my arm from finger-tip to elbow. They held tiny lanterns – and they floated upon the air! As they darted and danced around us, I perceived delicate wings on their backs that whispered gently as those of a humming bird.

Dismounting, we watched as our horses were gently led away to be fed and watered, while we were each taken by the hand by fae folk our own height, their long-fingered hands pale in our own, the air around them sweet with the fragrance of spring flowers. Together, we descended to the pavilion rising from the round of water. Eight runs of stone steps offered a way down the basin’s slopes, but only four connected to the pavilion by arched bridges over the water. The remaining four caught the light of lanterns and the Moon in silvered splashes as water tumbled from step to step in each, replenishing the waters of the basin.

Within the pavilion, we passed the night with food and drink, talking with our hosts as their tiny cousins danced and played on silvered wings, voices bright and clear. I cannot remember when I fell asleep, but I awoke on a green lawn sitting between stone steps and tumbling water. Two of my company slept beside me, and as I sat up and looked around, I saw more of my companions lying on other lawns across the steps and waters. Broad leaves carrying breads and fruit were set out on tables for us, but of our tall hosts, naught could be seen wherever I looked. 

Laughter, high and sweet, caused me to turn my head and four of the tiny folk danced lightly above the waters falling down to the circular lake. “You will not find them!” A voice sang as they danced. “For they do not like the sun; night and the light our Lady Luna is more to their liking and desires. They will remain indoors until she rises again. But we are here, and we will dance! Will you not stay with us? The citadel lays not far, and we will show you the way, but not before you share Luna’s blessing once more with us!”

Sweetly given, and with laughter and music around is, we could not refuse such an invitation.
