Firestorm’s Xmas party and the Ghost Town in Second Life

Saturday, December 19th, 2015 marks Firestorm viewer’s official 2015 Christmas Party, and with it comes the opening of The Ghost Town, the first in a series of free-to-play games developed by MadPea Games. These games are intened to give new residents coming through the Firestorm Gateway a means to become more familiar with Second Life through active game play.

The Christmas party will kick-off at 14:00 SLT, which will also see The Ghost Town open its gates to players, features entertainment from Mankind Tracer, Changhigh Trinity Sisters Fireshow and DJs. The entertainments area has been arranged so that around 200 people should hopefully be able to access the party, with three points of entry provided:  Region 1, Region 2, and Region 3.

The Ghost Town sees players tasked with  investigating the recent disappearance of local fisherman Big Jimmy. Guided by his journal and equipped with a special camera, players follow the clues left by a mind gone mad and discover the terrible truth behind Big Jimmy’s recent activities.

“New residents who stay and play in our virtual world are essential to the continued success of our grid,” MadPea say of The Ghost Town. “Whilst Linden Lab continue to work to attract new residents once they join and enter the world, we will be doing our part to ensure that they realise the rich, user-created content that is on offer. We hope that by playing our games new residents will learn skills that will help them over the steep SL learning curve while having some fun and collecting some prizes.”

What is the dark secret behind "Big Jimmy's" disappearance - and where will his journal lead new users in Second Life?
What is the dark secret behind “Big Jimmy’s” disappearance – and where will his journal lead new users in Second Life?

As with all MadPea games, The Ghost Town is HUD-driven, and as with their most recent games, utilises experience keys to make game play easier. Gameplay takes place within the Firestorm Gateway regions, where they have to collect the images of 20 “ghosts” using the camera (HUD). Once all 20 have been imaged, players are eligible to claim their prizes.

The prizes on offer have been selected on the basis of being of value to new users and helping them enhance their Second Life experience. They have been provided by creators representing the rich choice of content available in Second Life: abranimations®, Apple Fall,, Black Pearls, Bryn Oh, Cheeky Pea, Deadwool, Elikatira, junk. Lapointe and Bastchild, Lilith’s Den, Plastik, Pose O’Clock, Sn@tch, Snowpaws, The Little Bat, TrAsHeD, United Color, WarBug and zombie suicide.  The MadPea and Firestorm teams both extend their thanks to all of those who came forward with the offer of prizes.

New players will be drawn into the Firestorm gateway through a series of dedicated web landing pages that are in developments (Linden Lab, and quite separately to the gateway trial programme, also use targeted landing pages to attract new users from specific audiences, so it is an approach which seems to yield results). Obviously, existing users are also able to play the game – hence the launch alongside the Firestorm Christmas party.

So, if you’re in the mood for a party, and fancy a spooky new game – hop over to the Firestorm Gateway regions using the region links towards the top of this piece.

MadPea seek creators’ help for The Ghost Town in Second Life

The Ghost Town - A new MadPea game aimed at new SL users, launching soon at the Firestorm Gateway
The Ghost Town – a MadPea mystery game aimed at new SL users, launching soon at the Firestorm Gateway

During the recent soft launch of the Firestorm Gateway, I reported on the news that MadPea would be joining the Firestorm team as a partner, providing free-to-play games in order to help new users engage with Second Life.

These games are intended to be Experiences-led, and demonstrate some of the many activities those new to Second Life can expect to find in-world, as then learn to find their way around – thus fitting in with the overall thrust of the Firestorm Gateway regions, which offer a range of activities and attractions for incoming new users, as will as practical guidance and support for understanding the viewer and getting to grips with general interactions, etc.

The MadPea team have now announced the first of these games will be launching on December 19th, 2015. Called The Ghost Town. It will see players tasked with  investigating the recent disappearance of local fisherman Big Jimmy. Guided by his journal and equipped with a special camera, players follow the clues left by a mind gone mad and discover the terrible truth behind Big Jimmy’s recent activities. One they have completed the game, player will be rewarded with prizes.

MadPea-Firestorm

It is with regards to the latter point that MadPea are seeking the support of 20 Second Life Creators, as the official blog post from the team explains:

We’re looking for 20 stores to collaborate with us by providing a themed prize for the players.
In return your brand and prizes will be promoted by both MadPea and Firestorm and you’ll be potentially promoting yourselves to your customers of the future before anyone else.

In particular, MadPea are looking for prizes which will help new users practically enhance their Second Life experience, and so are particularly hoping to hear from creators of wearable items such as skins, mesh body parts and accessories, hair, clothing, avatar accessories, pets, wearable vehicles, companions, AOs etc.

Creators wishing to indicate their willingness to be involved in the game and offer prizes should complete in full The Ghost Town prize donation application form, and to do so no later than Saturday, December 12th. Those stores / creators selected by the team will be contacted directly shortly thereafter with information on how to proceed.

In the meantime, if you require more information about becoming a vendor, please contact Tichelle Teebrook in world. For more information about MadPea in general, or their collaboration with the Firestorm team, please contact Kess Crystal in world, or via kess-at-madpeagames.com.

Peatonville Bay: gateway to the asylum in Second Life

MadPea Games will be launching their latest adventure on Friday, October 9th, when the gates open on the Peatonville Asylum in Second Life (Gold key holders get early access from Thursday, October 8th).

A HUD hud-based, grid-wide adventure game featuring a layered storyline with puzzles, horror and intrigue, Peatonville Asylum includes two core regions to explore, created by the MadPea team.

The first of these regions, Peatonville Bay, is now open for visitors to explore, and is the focus of a special photography competition – of which, more below.

Peatonville Bay; Inara Pey, October 2015, on Flickr Peatonville Bay

But what is Peatonville Asylum? I’ll simply quote from the introduction:

The Peatonville Asylum is rumoured to be haunted since November 1943, when all 22 residents – both patients and staff all vanished without a trace. Peatonville Asylum was never re-opened again.. Until now, when mysterious shards have been found from the asylum grounds. The researchers believe the shards belong to what were called Soulstones, special stones used by shamans to heal souls and restore eternal youth.

The Research Laboratory is offering rewards for any shards of the Soulstone.

Do you dare to enter the asylum to look for the shards and solve the mystery of the missing people?

HUDs for the game follow the lead set with MadPea’s recent game, The Collection (which I previewed here), with three HUD packages on offer: the Bronze (L$100), Silver (L$500) and Gold (L$1000).all three packages provide the HUD and game play; however, the Silver offers a special goodie bag of items and 25 special Silver prizes, while the Gold offers everything from both Bronze and Silver packages, a special game play outfit, and additional ghost hunt (and ghost camera) plus a further 25 special Gold prizes. You can catch a sneak peek at some of the prizes on the MadPea blog.

Peatonville Bay is the point at which the adventure begins. Here players, armed with their HUDs, can board the Peatonville Island ferry, Queen of Denial, for the trip to the island and the Asylum. It is also, as mentioned, the focus for a photography competition. On offer is a single prize: L$3000 and a Gold HUD for the game.

To be in with a chance of winning, entrants can submit up to 5 photographs taken within Peatonville Bay to the MadPea Flickr group. Photos may be edited, but must be titled “Peatonville Bay Photo Contest – [your name]”. The closing date for entries is Thursday, October 8th.

The region has been beautifully put together, as I hope the images here show, with great opportunities for photographs, exploring and shopping (you might even catch me featured in one of the stores – not that this is particularly relevant, but it surprised me! 🙂 ).

Keep an eye on the MadPea blog for the latest news and updates on Peatonville Asylum.

MadPea auction raises L$1.6+ million for LLK and Kenya school

A purpose-built entertainments area has been built for the MadPea event, with auction boards placed around the dance floor and stage
The purpose-built entertainments area built for the MadPea Charity Auction in aid of LLK and the Nakuru School construction project

The weekend of the 25th through 27th September marked the 2015 MadPea Charity Auction to help further the work of Live and Learn Kenya (LLK) in building a school in Nakuru, Kenya, where young children will be able to receive an education (you can read my background article on the event here).

The weekend featured live entertainment throughout, provided by 22 entertainers and live performers, at a specially constructed stage and location over Stargazer Bay, and gave people the opportunity to bid to spend time with a host of well-known Second Life residents and  Linden Lab staff, and to gain special goodies in the process.

Over 60 people had signed-up to participate in the auction, with boards placed around the stage area, which included a beautifully crafted model of the school in Nakuru, Kenya, which has been under construction since 2014, with the first phase having opened in January 2015.

Some amazing opportunities were on offer to winning bids – shopping and spending time with Xiola Linden, gong to an event with Simon or Rider Linden or getting one-to-one LSL tutoring from them; time with some of SL’s top creators and special gifts from them, and more.

In all, the event raised a stunning L$1,667,762 (approx. US $6671) through bids and donations by the time the final hammer fell.

The highlight of the weekend was the live auction, where many of those offering their services / time / selves were up on the stage and able to talk about what they’ve been offering, help encourage the bidding and even adding to their lot.

Kess Crystal was kind enough to pass me details of the bid amounts, which were topped-out by an incredible L$150,000 offered for 2 hours with Queen Pea Kiana Writer and input on a MadPea upcoming game!

Commenting on the event, Kess Crystal from the MadPea team said, ” I cannot help but feel immense happiness and pride at this outcome. I’m so proud of everyone was has been involved, and in the Second Life community, all of whom have proved yet again that when we come together with a common goal, we can achieve such great things.

“When I actually sit back and let it sink in that generations of children will have an education because of what we achieved at the weekend, I am humbled beyond words.”

I was only able to spend brief periods at the event on Saturday and Sunday, but the atmosphere while there was tremendous, and it was great making new friends (/me waves to Levio 🙂 ). Special thanks to everyone who took part as auction lots or bidders, etc.  Very special thanks to Jo Yardley for her incredibly generous bid for my time  – I’m looking forward to the film project!

Most of all: congratulations to the MadPea team, to Brique, LLK and the children of Nakuru school – current and future!

The 2015 MadPea Celebrity Auction kicks-off at 08:00 SLT on Friday, September 25th, and runs through until around 20:00 SLT on Sunday, September 27th.

Over 60 people have signed up for the auction, including Alexa Linden, Simon Linden and Xiola Linden. Everyone putting themselves forward is offering something special for anyone winning the bid on them, be it time spent with them or a special award or activity or other unique opportunity.

The aim of the event is to raise money to help further the work of Live and Learn Kenya (LLK) in building a school in Nakuru, Kenya, where young children will be able to receive an education.

Organised by Brique Zeiner, LLK is perhaps more familiarly known in Second Life by its Feed A Smile programme, which is also run in-world by Brique under her SL name of Brique Topaz.

A purpose-built entertainments area has been built for the MadPea event, with auction boards placed around the dance floor and stage

Feed A Smile provides nutritious warm lunches for over 400 children every day, paid for entirely from donations. Over one-third of this money comes directly through donations made to Feed a Smile from within second Life.

LLK’s broader programme includes finding sponsors to finance the education of children in Kenya, helping to provide them with everything they need: uniforms, shoes, text books, school supplies, etc. The organisation also provide medical and dental care for children, including check-ups and vaccinations. 100% of the donations received by LLK are transferred directly to Kenya to care for children, provide education, medicine, food, shelter and foster care. Nothing is lost to salaries, fees or administrative costs at LLK.

The events area includes a replica of the Nakuru school under construction, which will gradually complete itself over the course of the weekend as donations are received

The school construction project is one of the most ambitious programmes LLK has undertaken. Each room at the school costs some US $19,000 to build and equip. However, the first elements opened in January 2015, and work is continuing – and will go further with the help of Second Life residents. With some L$ 1.1 million raised for LLK in the 2014 MadPea Charity Auction, the hope is that this year will raise even more.

The live auction will take place between 08:00 and 16:00 SLT on Sunday, September 27th, but the auction boards will be open to bidders from 08:00 on Friday, September 25th, and will remain so throughout all the entertainment leading up to the live auction activities.

At the time of writing, the entertainment schedule stood as follows. All times are SLT, and as always, there might be last-minute changes and updates – so keep abreast of the latest via the MadPea blog:
