SL11B Community Celebrations: patience, young applicant!

Applications for the SL11B Community Celebration closed on Tuesday 20th May 2014 – and it seems that many of you are eager to hear back on you applications – which is great!

However, please, please bear in mind that in all, the organising team have received over 1,000 applications, including:

  • 426 exhibitor applications
  • 440 performer applications
  • Over 300 volunteer applications.

Obviously, the volume of applications means that it is going to take time to sort through everything and, in particular, figure out how to get 426 exhibitors and 440 performers into 243 plots and 3 stages.

While priority is being given to exhibitor applications, do keep in mind that exhibition parcels don’t actually open for building until noon SLT on Friday May 30th, so please give the organising team a little more time to work through the applications, assess them, and get acceptances out. Someone will get back to you as soon as they are in a position to do so, and ahead of the start of the building window.

Once you do hear back on your application, again, please be patient! Read and follow the procedure in your acceptance email and please don’t IM the group before May 30 asking to be let in to the SL11B community Celebration regions; it won’t happen.

Also, the team would like to point out that water plots are extremely limited this year and so will be going to exhibitors that really need them. If all you need is shallow water or part water, then your needs may well be met through the use of a land plot. The team ask for your understanding with this, and offer their apologies in advance to anyone requesting a water plot but who does not get one.

If you’ve applied to be a volunteer or performer – don’t worry, you’ll not be forgotten, either. Replies just might take a little longer to organise, and the team will be posting dates on which  performers can expect to hear from them in a while.

In the mean time, here’s the updated timeline for the celebration:

  • Friday, May 30th, noon: Sims open for builders
  • Wednesday, June 15th, noon: Sims close to builders
  • Saturday, June 21st, noon: Press day
  • Sunday, June 22nd, noon SLT: SL11BCC opens!
  • Monday, June 23rd: Second Life’s Official 11th Birthday!
  • Sunday, June 29th: final day of celebrations
  • Monday, June 30th to Saturday, July 5th: Sims will remain open for viewing. No performances.
  • Sunday, July 6th to Tuesday, July 8th: Breakdown
  • Wednesday, July 9th: Sims go offline

It’s time to kick-off another week of fabulous story-telling in Voice, brought to Second Life and Kitely by the staff and volunteers at the Seanchai Library.

As always, all times SLT, and unless otherwise stated, events will be held on the Seanchai Library’s home on Imagination Island.

Sunday May 18th

10:00 PDT: CatNYP! at Kitely

“A feisty changling girl helps a changling boy return to the “real” New York City from the parallel fairy world where they were both raised. The New York Public Library’s automated catalogue, called CATNYP, is a real lion and a library page is literally an animated piece of paper that retrieves books.”

With Shandon Loring at Lighthouse Point in the Seanchai region on Kitely.

13:30: Tea-time at Baker Street: The Sign of Four Concludes

Sign-of-fourTea-time at Baker Street sees Caledonia Skytower, Corwyn Allen and Kayden Oconnell open the pages of the second full-length novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, which was originally published under the title The Sign of the Four.

In 1888, Mary Morston come to Sherlock Holmes seeking his assistance in two matters. The first is with regards to her father. Having returned safely from India in 1878, Captain Arthur Morston had arranged to meet his daughter at the Langham Hotel, London – but he had vanished from the hotel prior to ber arrival, and no trace of his whereabouts has ever been discovered. The second relates to a series of pearls he has received, at the rate of one a year, every year, from 1882 onwards. The pearls started arriving after she had responded to a strange newspaper query inquiring for her, and the last one had come with a letter, indicating she had somehow been wronged, and asking to meet with her.

Holmes discovers that the pearls started arriving shortly after the death of Major Sholto, a colleague of Arthur Morston’s from the army in India, and he is certain there is a connection between the two – a connection which appears to involve an Indian fortress and the names of three Sikhs and a man by the name of Jonathan Small. Then the subject of a treasure and links between it and Arthur Morston, Major Sholto and Sholto’s sons are all revealed …

Kate DiCamillo’s second novel to win a prestigious Newbery Award (the first being The Tales of Despereaux in 2004), is at its heart, a comic superhero tale.

Thursday May 15th

19:00: Scylla and Charybdis

From the pages of Greek mythology come Scylla and Charybdis, two immortal and irresistible monsters who beset the narrow waters (though to be the Straits of Messina) traversed by the hero Odysseus in his wanderings as described by Homer in his epic Odyssey. Scylla, a supernatural creature, with 12 feet and 6 heads on long, snaky necks, each head having a triple row of shark-like teeth, was once human in appearance, according to Ovid. Her transformation, he claimed within his Metamorphoses, was the result of jealousy and witchcraft on the part of Circe.

Charybdis, on the opposite shore of the narrows, was said to lurk under a fig tree and drank down and belched forth the waters of the straits three times a day. The shipwrecked Odysseus barely escaped her clutches by clinging to a tree until the improvised raft that she swallowed floated to the surface again after many hours.

Bay City turns 6

bay city 6Bay City celebrates its sixth anniversary on Sunday May 18th, and the Bay City community is marking the day with a another special time of festivities and fun to which everyone is invited!

Activities will kick-off at noon SLT with a parade lineup at the bandshell in Bay City – Harwich. At 12:30 SLT, the parade will make its way down Route 66, and proceed to the Bay City Fairgrounds in the North Channel region.

A live concert will kick off at 13:30 SLT at the Fairgrounds, featuring Christov Kohnke, Ultraviolet Alter, and Winston Ackland. Bay City’s own GoSpeed Racer of KONA Stream will be providing music leading into the event.

All Residents of the Second Life grid are invited to participate. Posters, banners, parade float bases, and other goods are available at the Bay City Community Centre, in the Daley Bay region, for those who wish to be a part of the parade, and a viewing area is provided. The music event is also open to all who wish to attend.

In real life, Winston’s career spans two decades, and you may have heard his cover of Lithium in the movie Marley and Me, while his version of Psycho Killer was featured in Oliver Stone’s Savages.

An accomplished song-writer, he loves playing before audiences in Second Life, where he performs a mix of solid original songs and what he calls ” offbeat covers” so that he can present “a musical party with old friends you haven’t met yet.”

Musician and artist Ultraviolet Alter is known throughout Second life both her distinctive musical compositions and for her numerous collaborations with other SL artists. she has participated in many events across Second Life.

Special Dedication

ever-1Bay City’s 6th anniversary is dedicated to the memory of Bay City and Second Life resident, Ever Dreamscape, who passed away recently in real life.

Ever had been an enthusiastic and active member of the Bay City community since she first came to Bay City in 2011. She was editor of the Bay City Post, and played a part in helping to organise many of the community’s events, including these 6th anniversary celebrations, prior to her passing.

Bay City is a mainland community, developed by Linden Lab and home to the Bay City Alliance. The Bay City Alliance was founded in 2008 to promote the Bay City regions of Second Life and provide a venue for Bay City Residents and other interested parties to socialize and network. It is now the largest Bay city group, and home to most Residents of Bay City.

World Goth Fair 2014

The World Goth Fair (WGF) started in Second Life on Thursday May 15th, and will run through until Sunday June 1st, 2014.

Over 80 merchants from across Second Life are participating in the fair, which is being held across three regions: Cursed (Adult), Sium (Moderate), and Port Seraphine (Moderate).

While showcasing some of the top designers in Second Life who supply the goth market, the primary aim of the event is to raise funds for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a UK-based charity that was founded in the wake of the brutal murder of Sophie Lancaster, a young woman who was killed for being a goth.

The Foundation defines its aims as being:

  • To create a lasting legacy to Sophie
  • To provide educational group-works that will challenge the prejudice and intolerance towards people from alternative subcultures.
  • To campaign to have the UK Hate Crime legislation extended to include people from “alternative subcultures” or “Lifestyle and Dress”

As well as supporting the Foundation, the WGF is also officially sanctioned by the organisers of  World Goth Day, which this year will be marked on Thursday May 22nd.

The three areas of the fair have been individually designed by Fox Nacht (Sium), Lokii Violet (Cursed) and Nephilaine Protaganist (Port Seraphine), and features it own unique look and atmosphere. As well as the stores, gacha, and other attractions, the fair will also feature live entertainment throughout its run – keep an eye on the WGF blog for notices of performances and sets as well as to keep abreast of all the news of the fair.

Planning to celebrate SL11B? Then let the Lab know!

secondlifeOn Friday May 16th, Linden Lab issued an invitation to users and communities planning their own events and activities to mark Second Life’s eleventh anniversary, to submit their details for inclusion in the SL Destination Guide.

The blog post reads in part:

Happy Birthday to …. Second Life!

While it’s only the middle of May, June is fastly approaching and the time is now to start planning your Second Life Birthday celebrations! As in past years, we’ll wrangle the best of the best in Second Life Birthday events and corral them into a special SL11B category on our Destination Guide during the month of June.

The blog post goes on to note that the community itself is organising its own celebratory event, and includes a link to the SL11B Community Celebration website.

Anyone who is planning a celebration of their own can submit details of the event / activity for inclusion in the special SL11B section of the Destination Guide by completing the official submission form using the “misc” category. Alternatively, the details can be submitted via e-mail to the Destination Guide editor, using “SL11B” is the subject line of the e-mail.

As with SL10B in 2013, the Lab is planning some surprises of its own to mark the occasion, and news on these will likely be appearing in due course in the official blog.

SL11B Community Celebration: of applications and a note to exhibitors

There are just six days to go before applications to be a part of the SL11B Community Celebrations close at midday SLT, Tuesday May 20th.

The organising team have been thrilled with the response so far, but are urging anyone wishing to take part in this year’s celebrations, and who has not already submitted an application to do so sooner rather than later. After all, you don’t want to go and put it off until tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow – and suddenly find it’s the 21st!

the application forms only take a couple of minutes to fill-out, and you can find them as follows:

  • Performers (for any of the event’s main stages) should apply here
  • Speakers and performance artists wishing to use the auditorium should apply here
  • Volunteers ready, will and able to help keep SL11BCC ticking along should apply here (training will be given!)
  • Exhibitors seeking a parcel of land on one of the 11 regions should apply here.

An Important Note to Exhibitors

All exhibition space applications must conform to the SLB Exhibitor Policies, which should be read prior to submitting an application, as they do contain important information.

When completing your Exhibitor Application, please keep foremost in your mind that the SL11B Community Celebration is a non-commercial event intended to showcase the best ideas, creativity, content and craftsmanship that the SL community has to offer. As such, applications which suggest an exhibit is little more than advertising space for a business or an organisation or a group, etc, and lacks any real attempt to fit with the event theme or match its celebratory nature, might be rejected.

This does not mean that if you have a business, or organisation or group you cannot apply for exhibitor space. Rather it means that:

  • You can apply, and use your brand name, etc., so long as there is more to your exhibit than just your brand name
  • You can give out gifts, landmarks, information and have group subscribers within your exhibit again, as long as there are not just what you exhibit has alongside your brand name
  • You can integrate your brand or product(s) into a build, so long as the build is focused on the SL11BCC theme or celebrating SL 11th anniversary, and not solely about product promotion. Think of things that make people engage and not just look – interactive pieces, games, puzzles, exhibits which tell a story, etc.
  • You cannot sell goods or services or use your exhibit space simply as a product catalogue showing off your goods or services.

To help understand what might or might not be acceptable with exhibitor applications, a short video has been produced, which underlines the above points and provides some examples of things you might want to consider when applying.

If you have already applied for exhibitor space, but feel your application may not meet the criteria the organisers are seeking, you can reapply. Just make sure your new application is entered before the closing deadline of midday SLT, Tuesday May 20th.
