Fantasy Faire 2016: As the sun slips westwards

Fantasy Faire 2016: The Dark Tower, Dangarnon
Fantasy Faire 2016: The Dark Tower, Dangarnon

Today marks the last day of Fantasy Faire. Once more the sun is slipping towards the western horizon over the Fairelands, and they will soon follow it into the west, leaving us once again with treasured memories of places visited, friends met, and activities shared. So now is the time to make a final pilgrimage through the regions and immerse yourself in their legends and stories.

I’ve already recorded my thoughts about this year’s Fairelands, how they’ve evoked memories and why each year’s event is perhaps a little more special than other Second Life events. I had hoped to spend a lot more time roaming their paths, tracks, road and alleyways, but as ever, time has proven itself difficult to balance.

So instead, I’ll just say that while the Fairelands may well soon be departing, there is still much to see and enjoy – and quite possibly, to take home with you. So don’t miss the events of this final day of fund raising, fun, performance and remembrance, which will include:

11:00 Clover and Dru jailed at Bright Haven – who will bail them while Catalina Staheli spins the tunes?

The auction will be live in Voice, and broadcast by Fantasy Faire Radio.

King, Queen and Chancellor of the Fairelands

You also have until 17:00 to cast your votes for the 2016 King, Queen and Chancellor of the Fairelands. The leading contenders were, when last I checked, and in descending order of votes from left to right:

KING: SnapeSeverus Snape
(J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series)
GoblinThe Goblin King
(from the fantasy film Labyrinth)
FF-KING5-TYRIONTirion Lannister
(G.R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire)
QUEEN: October DayeOctober Daye
(from the books by Seanan McGuire)
FF-QUEEN5-MALEFICENTMaleficent
(from the film of the same name)
FF-QUEEN4-GALADRIELGaladriel
(from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth)
CHANCELLOR: The Last UnicornThe Last Unicorn
(from the book of the same name by Peter S. Beagle)
FF-CHANC1-KROSPKrosp I
( Phil and Kaja Foglio’s Girl Genius series )
Cheshire CatCheshire Cat
(Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland)

I had expected either Severus Snape or the Goblin King to be popular this year, due to understandable reasons. Perhaps poor Tirion will gain enough nominations next year and go on to seize the lion’s share (see what I did there? 🙂 ) of the votes to claim the crown.

Things were, when I checked a little closer where the Queen was concerned, with my choice, Maleficent trying gallantly to catch October Daye; so again, perhaps next year she and Tirion might make an interesting pair on the Faireland’s thrones? If so, I hope Krosp I gains sufficient nominations and votes to assure him of the Chancellorship, which this year is certain to go the The Last Unicorn.

And you can find out who the three duly elected officials are at the end of the Fantasy Faire May Day Ball, which open at 16:00 SLT at the Sapphire Mirror Lake, and runs through until 18:00 SLT.

The Fantasy Faire Quest – Please Give Feedback

A huge amount of effort again went into this year’s Fairelands-wide Quest. Caitlyn and I certainly had our work cut out testing it and then putting together the guidelines to help players (without giving anything away!).

But if you participated, what did you think? Did it meet your expectations? Exceed them? Did you find it too easy? Too hard? A bit … something else? Please take a minute or two, if you have not already done so, to provide your feedback and thoughts on the Quest.

And How Much has Been Raised?

Well, obviously the kiosks will remain open throughout that day, and there is still the Live Auction to come, so the final tally won’t be known for a while. But, at the time of writing, the overall total raised by Fantasy Faire (including Convio donations) stood at an incredible L$5,970,858 (approx. US $23,883). Let’s see how much more can be added to that total by the end of the day!
