Relay for Life of InWorldz kickoff rally

August 25th will see the start of the first ever Relay for Life season held in InWorldz, with a special kick-off rally.

The three-month event will run through until November 17th and has the full support of the American Cancer Society.

Other key dates for the season include:

  • Saturday September 22nd: RFL of InWorldz Half-way Event
  • Friday November 2nd through Sunday November 4th: RFL of InWorldz Relay for Life Weekend
  • Saturday 17th November: RFL of InWorldz Closing Party.

The theme for this inaugural season is Colour of Hope, as featured in the season’s banner, as seen in the video, above.

The kick-off rally will be held on Dreamscapes of Poseidon (IWurl), commencing at midday IW time (PDT). It presents a chance for participants to learn how their involvement benefits the American Cancer Society’s goal to save lives and create more birthdays and the opportunity to meet the Society’s IW representative as well as gain inspiration from DJ KyFire Oakleaf’s library of originals created by all those who have been involved in the fight against cancer, including survivors, caregivers and loved ones of those who sadly succumbed to the disease.

Kick-off Rally Schedule

  • 12:00 pm KyFire Oakleaf – RFL Songs
  • 12:15 pm Hairy Thor Chair
  • 12:22 pm RFL Video
  • 12:30 pm TIGGS Beaumont
  • 12:37 pm KyFire
  • 12:40 pm Sting Raymaker
  • 12:50 pm KyFire Oakleaf- closing.

Following the kick-off rally, the season will comprise a number of events held within InWorldz, culminating in the Relay Weekend itself at the start of November. In it, individuals and teams will camp out, picnic, dance, play games and take turns circling around a track “relay” style to raise funds and fight cancer. The Relay Weekend will open  with cancer survivors leading the way around the track and being honoured in the Survivor Lap. They will be followed throughout the day by groups, teams and individuals participating in the track walk which will continue over 24 hours, and the weekend will include the beautiful, moving and silent luminaira ceremony, in which lights are lit in memory of a loved one who won the fight against cancer or in remembrance of a special someone who lost their battle.

Relay For Life represents hope in that those lost to cancer will not be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.

RFL 2012: Underway!

RFL of SL’s 2012 Relay Weekend has commenced. The sims are open, and the survivor / caregiver walk has set the stage for 24 hours of lapped themes around the track. The weekend kicked-off with a grand opening ceremony – which I have to confess to having to miss as I couldn’t get into the 4 regions where the ceremony was taking place – and will now run through until 10:00 SLT on Sunday 15th July, with track laps taking place at the start of almost every hour, and a host of events and activities taking place across the track regions.

From the visitor’s guide

If you are planning to walk the track, donate, and joy in events – and of course, you are planning to do just that! – make sure your first port-of-call is the welcome centre, where you can collect your pedometer and walk-and-talk attachments, as I mentioned last time around. Here to you can also get your RFL of 2012 Visitor’s Guide, which you can also view on-line.

Welcome centre

From here you can use the teleport system to randomly TP you to a point on the grid, or jump directly to one of the points of interest – the RFL blog has a list of events taking place at the various stages throughout today and tomorrow.

A look along the track

The weekend is liable to be popular, so please try to be as low-lag during your visit as possible and detach any / all unneeded attachments. Gift bags line the track itself, allowing you to drop your Lindens into them at any time, and you can of course opt to swing off the track at any time and enjoy any of the fabulous builds along the route before continuing on your way – the themed walks last an hour, which should provide a decent amount of time for admiring builds as well as for putting in your laps!

Given this year’s theme is Time for a Cure, many of the builds feature time and clocks within them – often in the most imaginative of ways. All the builds offer something special and are worth a visit in their own right, and really are worth visiting and exploring – and give you ample time to join in for a lap or two!

I’m hoping to join-in for at least two of the themed laps over the course of the weekend – I have my costumes at the ready – and look forward to see you there as well :).

Machinima Expo 2012: submissions open

Pooky Amsterdam has tapped me about this, and I’m happy to slip-in this post for her.

This year marks the 5th annual Machinima Expo, a three day virtual machinima festival which bridges Second Life and the real world. The Expo will be held over the weekend of the 17th-18th November 2012, and submissions are now open for those wishing to participate.

There is no maximum running time for entries to the event, but a couple of rules must be adhered to:

  • Entries must comprise at least 50% machinima
  • Entrants must not have previously submitted the film to the Expo.

Note that films do not have to be filmed in Second Life (or any other virtual world – although entries created in any virtual world are obviously welcome), just so long as they are at least 50% machinima. The closing date for submissions is September 30th 2012, and you can find the entry form on the Expo website.

A look at a couple of entries from last year’s event

The Expo itself will take place largely inside Second Life during the weekend of the 17th-18th November (venue to be confirmed) and films will be simultaneously streamed in-world and to the Expo website. As well as showing this year’s entries, the Expo will comprise:

  • An awards ceremony featuring a grand prize, plus three Jury prizes. This year’s prizes include sound effects collections, a full license of Lightwave 10, copies of iClone5 Pro and much more
  • Panel discussions, live filmmaker interviews, a keynote address and live presentations on the craft/art of making machinima
  • Workshops.

Additional details on events and event streaming will be posted on the Expo website nearer the weekend.
