This year also sees artists exhibit at HGE, and I’ll be taking a look at who is exhibiting during the course of the exhibition.

Having been put back from its usual May time slot due to unavoidable circumstances, the 7th Home and Garden Expo (HGE) in support of Relay for Life of Second Life and the American Cancer Society, opened its doors to the public on Tuesday September 16th, and promises to be another hugely popular event.
Running through until Sunday September 28th, 2014, HGE comprises nine regions adjacent to the American Cancer Society region, and offers some of the finest in home, garden, and furnishing designs available across the grid. With around 90 exhibitors taking part, the event offers something for anyone who is looking for a new home, ideas for furnishing and decor, wishing to improve their building (or other) skills, or who just wishes to keep abreast of the latest building / home trends in Second Life.
The Prim Perfect Castle and grounds, designed by Aisling Sinclair using elements from a number of SL designers, provides a magnificent venue for the magazine’s talks and presentations
As well as providing the opportunity to discover the best in housing designs ans itself, there will be a wide range of events going on through the two weeks of HGE, including talks, classes, hunts and more taking place around the Expo spaces, as well as a special gacha, a raffle, the silent auction … detail of which will all be made available through the HGE website’s programme pages.
The theme for this year’s event is Story Time, and many of the exhibit areas reflect this, often in quite imaginative ways, so it’s worth taking your time when exploring, as there are some gems of exhibit pieces to be found.
Communities and groups have also had the opportunity to represent themselves at the Expo by means of info boards which have been available for lease throughout the Expo regions. Roleplay groups, bloggers, music venues, galleries, and so on, have been able to advertise themselves through these boards and extend their reach, with all proceeds from the leasing of the boards going directly to RFL of SL.
As well as offering full-size display homes and furnishing / decor displays, several exhibitors are also showing beautiful miniatures of their works, like this detailed model from HGE Gold Sponsor, Meshworx
Visitors to the Expo areas can also participate in Letters From Expo. The HGE blog describes this as:
Working to give the folks battling this deadly disease reason to hope. To give their caregivers and loved ones hope and encouragement. Because the battle is lonely, and so is the caregiving. Both can leave a person with feelings of isolation and hopelessness.
This year, we want to spread the hope as far and as wide as we can. We want to show our love, offer our courage, give our thanks, and remember those who are no longer with us in a new and immediate way. Moreover, in a way that can be seen across the globe, even by non-SLers.

To this end, visitors are invited to write a letter of hope to cancer sufferers and caregivers on one of five subjects (Love, Hope, Thanks, Courage. Remembrance), and for a suggested donation of L$50, post them in the corresponding mailbox at the Expo’s Post Office, where they will be sorted and later appear on the HGE blog. Visitors may of course submit letters on more than one of the themes, but all letters should meet the requirements set-out in the Letters From Expo page linked-to above.
With some L$415,000 raised during the core RFL of SL season, the Home and Garden Expo offers an opportunity to further build on this year’s total for RFL, while offering SL users a lot to see and do. Be sure, as well, not to miss the event interviews featured on the HGE website.
A Disastrous Beauty offers a fabulous exhibit which perfectly captures the Story Time theme to this year’s event
Having been put back from its usual May time slot due to unavoidable circumstances, the 2014 Home and Garden Expo in support of Relay for Life of Second Life and the American Cancer Society, is now accepting registrations from exhibitors and are seeking bloggers to help cover the event.
The Expo will open its doors to the public on Tuesday September 16th and run through until Sunday September 28th, 2014. The press preview days will be held on Sunday 14th and Monday 15th September 2014.
The Home and Garden Expo is the SL event where users can see homes, gardens and furnishing from creators across SL, attend talks and presentations by designers, enjoy entertainment throughout the week and – most importantly, help raise funds for RFL of SL. A blog post from Kat Alderson on the Second Life Home and Garden Expo website brings word that this year’s event, the 7th to be held in Second life, has been rescheduled.
Originally set to take place on May 13th through 27th inclusive, the event will now take place in September, with the Press Days set for the 14th and 15th September, and opening its doors to the public at large on September 16th through 28th inclusive.
The change has come about due to a mix of unforeseeable circumstances, misunderstandings in what is proving to be a packed events season, as Kat explains in the post:
In October 2013, we announced that the 2014 Home Expo would take place May 13-27. Since then, other events announced their schedules, and the spring and summer are packed with high volume events which support Relay For Life of Second Life, as well as other non-profit organizations, charitable institutions, and private interests.
The Home and Garden Expo is the SL event where users can see homes, gardens and furnishing from creators across SL, enjoy talks and presentations by designers, enjoy entertainment throughout the week and – most importantly, help raise funds for RFL of SL. The 2014 event will now take place between September 16th and 28th, with press days on the 14th and 16th September
While the new dates for the event fall outside of the main RFL of SL fundraising season, the 2014 Home and Garden Expo will still be an RFL of SL event, and 100% of all fees, sponsorships and donations will go directly to the RFL of SL 2014 fundraising coffers.
One element of the Expo will, however, still occur in May 2014. This is the Fiction for a Cure activities (readings, auctions, and raffle), which will take place May 16-26 on the American Cancer Society island.
The 6th annual Second Life Home and Garden Expo opened on Friday May 24th 2013.
In support of Relay for Life, and covering a total of 11 regions adjoining the American Cancer Society, the Expo brings together over 100 exhibitors of the very best homes, gardens, landscaping and interior design products in Second Life. It will continue through until Sunday June 2nd, 2013.
Eight of the regions of the expo are devoted to homes and gardens, while two more are devoted to the Breedables Fair, which features 30 of creators of Second Life breedable creatures. The remaining region in the exposition is devoted to entertainment and activities.
The Expo is an annual highlight for those that love seeking out the latest home and garden products and combined with a full entertainment schedule, hunts, raffles and silent auctions plus items designed just for this event – you can be sure of finding stylish new products to give your home a fresh look.

Entertainment at the Expo will be ongoing through the week of the event, and the best place to find out information on what is going on is the Expo’s entertainment webpage. As with previous years, the Expo has a hunt running through the week, featuring some unique prizes. There’s a L$10 entry fee (proceeds to RFL), and the hunt is “blind” hunt – meaning entrants get the landmarks/locations of all the stores in the hunt and their hint, but do not know which store they’re going to. Hints for the hunt can be found at the landing points in each of the Expo regions.
A Silent Auction is also a feature of this year’s expo, with more unique items donated by creators and with all proceeds going to RFL.

Release a Lantern of Peace and Love
In 2012, Alchemy Immortalis created a lantern which formed the centrepiece of remembering all those who had survived cancer’s ravages and those who had succumbed in their battle against the disease through a special daily ceremony in which lanterns would be released and allowed to float up into the sky.
The ceremony became very special to the people who attended, and so the folks at PrimPerfect have decided to host it again in 2013. So, they’ve extended an invitation for people to join them at the Prim Perfect platform on Home Expo 6 every day of the Expo at 16:00 for a communal release of lanterns both to celebrate the living and in memory of those we have loved and lost.
PrimPerfect are also hosting a series of talks with designers throughout the week of the Expo, starting at 15:00 SLT on Friday May 24th with Loz Hyde, Maxwell Graf and Kriss Lehmann, all of whom will be talking mesh.
Meet the Designers with PrimPerfect
The talks will all be taking place at the PrimPerfect Temple at the Expo.
