RFL: The Paint it Purple wrap and the Kick-off weekend

2015-RFL-Kick-OffSaturday March 7th and Sunday March 8th will see both a wind-down of the 2015 RFL of SL Paint it Purple campaign and the launch of the official 2015 RFL of SL fund raising season as he kick-off weekend arrives.

Paint it Purple, the annual event designed to raise awareness and excitement about the current year’s RFL of sL season, started on February 21st and concludes on Saturday February 7th (so you still have time to join in, if you haven’t already done so!). It does so by encouraging everyone to paint the grid purple, the official colour of RFL of SL, and you can do so by painting your house, your land, even yourself purple for all or part of the time.

To mark the end of this year’s campaign, there will be a special Paint Second Life Purple wrap up party on Saturday, March 7th, starting at 17:00 SLT and running through until 20:00  SLT. Hosted by T1 Radio, the party is also an opportunity for  teams to set-up for the Main Event on Sunday, March 8th. So why not get the purple togs out one last time and join the fun!

In NYC on March 17th? Can you log-in to real life and help Draxtor?

l2l-header

Login2Life is one of the most engaging and inspirational documentaries made about virtual worlds. Almost four years in the making, Daniel Moshel’s film follows people from around the world who spend their time engaged in the virtual worlds of Second Life and World of Warcraft.

Entirely without a direct narrative voice-over, the film’s power lies in both allowing those appearing in it to describe their involvement in the worlds they use entirely in their own words, and in allowing the audience to engage its cognitive processes, rather than trying to lead them by the hand to a pre-determined conclusion.

This means that what is seen in the film might always sit comfortably with people, but it does make them think, and in terms of Second Life, it offer a clear challenge to what might be said to be the stereotypical misconceptions about the platform as a whole, and invite those critical of it to re-think their position.

Login2Life involved many people in its production, including Draxtor Despres, who provided both the music for the film and some of the machinima footage used within it. He has been an ardent supporter of the film, promoting it wherever and whenever he can – and he now needs the assistance of a volunteer to help him do so again.

On Tuesday, March 17th, Login2Life will be shown at the Reel Abilities Film Festival, in what is being billed as its US screen premiere. The film will be screened at 20:30 EDT at the JCC Manhattan. At the same time, the film will also be streamed in-world at Virtual Ability’s Sojourner Auditorium.

After the screening, commencing at around 22:00 EDT, an in-world panel at the Sojourner Auditorium, comprising Drax, Login2Life’s director, Daniel Moshel and film participant and founder of Virtual Ability, Gentle Heron, will take questions from the audience at the JCC Manhattan under the moderation of anthropologist and film-maker Faye Ginsburg.

And it is with this SL / RL cross-over discussion that Drax is seeking assistance.

The open-air Sojourner Auditorium, Virtual Ability Island, will host the in-world showing of Login2Life on Tuesday, March 17th, 2015, and will be the venue for the SL side of the SL / RL post-presentation discussion

“I need an SL enthusiast in the New York City area,” Drax informed me when discussing the event. “Someone who can not only attend the screening on March 17th, but who can offer their services to the organisers, and help them deal with any audio or video issues which might occur during the discussion panel.”

Obviously, a reasonable knowledge of streaming and audio in relation to Second Life would obviously be of benefit if you would like to offer your support, and Drax further indicated to me that there will be the opportunity for time and expenses to be reimbursed.

So, if you are able to lend an important hand in this event, please contact Drax directly via e-mail at the earliest opportunity.

The event is also an excellent opportunity for those in the NYC area who have not seen Login2Life to do so. Tickets for the screening are  available through the Reel Abilities website for those who might want to pop along.

Finally, if you’re not in NYC to see the film there, you can also hop over to Virtual Ability island, and watch the in-world streaming of the film there, which will start at 17:30 SLT on Tuesday, March 17th, 2015 – but do be aware seating will be limited.

Caledonia, Kaydon OConnell and Corwyn Allen reconvene at the rooms of 221B Baker Street to this week read the story of The Five Orange Pips, which first appeared in The Strand Magazine in November 1891.

In 1887, John Openshaw, a young gentleman brings to Holmes and Watson a strange tale concerning his uncle, Elias Openshaw and his father, Joseph Openshaw, which goes back several years.

Having lived as a plantation owner in Florida and then served on the side of the Confederate States during the American Civil War, Elias Openshaw had returned to England and settled at an estate in Sussex.

After a few years, he invited his unmarried nephew to join him, offering him the run of the estate with the exception of one locked room, in which Openshaw the elder kept his travelling trunks. Other than this, there is nothing really out of the ordinary.

Until, in 1883,  a strange letter containing five orange pips arrives. It sends Elias Openshaw in a frenzied downwards spiral of increasingly erratic behaviour, until he is found dead in the garden pond, having apparently drowned after a drunken fall. Then, a year later, having inherited Elias’ estate, John’s father, Joseph, receives an identical letter. Five days later, he is found dead, apparently the victim of a fall into a local quarry while visiting a friend.

And now, in September 1887, John Openshaw himself has received a letter, again containing five orange pips, and has turned to Holmes for help….

But in their explorations of Dr. Pym’s house the three of them find their way into the basement, where they come across a mysterious door and a equally mysterious emerald-covered booth, entirely without text. 19:00: Starswarm

StarswarmStarswarm Station is a remote research station established to study strange alien life. The planet on which it is located is the home of the starswarm, intelligent plants living under the planet’s shallow lakes and seas, and roaming bands of centaur-like creatures dubbed “haters”.

The station is also home to Kip, a teenage boy living under the guardianship of his “uncle”. However, as Kip begins to discover, he has another guardian: Gwen, an AI system his mother had been working on, prior to her death, and which communicates with Kip via a small implant placed inside his brain at birth.

Gwen knows far more about the planet and the lifeforms it harbours than Kip could imagine. It also knows a lot about the company that runs the station and, for all intents and purposes, “owns” the planet on which it sits.

Slowly, Gwen reveals these various truths to Kip, including his own destiny. But in doing so, it puts Kip, and potentially the entire station, at risk.

Join Gyro Muggins as he commences a reading of Jerry Pournelle’s 1998 novel intended for teenage readers but which offers an interesting look at subjects such as neural nets and living computer systems.

With Caledonia Skytower and Kayden OConnell.

Wednesday March 4th, 19:00: The Quiet Man

quiet-manReleased in 1952, John Ford’s The Quiet Man is regarded as a classic Irish-American romantic comedy / drama. Starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara (and assorted members of their RL families!) and Barry Fitzgerald, it is a popular choice among critics and film-lovers.

The screenplay for the film was drawn in a large part from a short story of the same name originally published in 1933 in the Saturday Evening Post, and penned by Irish author, Maurice Welsh. Together with a number of other short stories by Walsh, The Quiet Man was gathered into a single volume of his short stories, The Quiet Man and Other Stories, which dealt with many recurring characters living in rural Ireland of the 1920s, and set against the backdrop of the civil unrest which affected the country at that time, while examining the complexities and occasional intrigues of life, love and Irish traditions.

Join Caledonia Skytower as she reads Walsh’s original tale of The Quiet Man, Paddy Bawn Enright..

Lab asks educators to share their success stories

secondlifeLinden Lab has issued a blog post and started a discussion thread in the forums on the subject of educational success stories in Second Life.

In particular, they are keen to hear of success stories within the educational sector and by those who have been using the platform for educational purposes (outside of teaching new residents how to use Second Life, An area in which the Lab already knows there are in-world organisations at work in that area as well).

The blog post reads in full:

Are you an educator seeing positive results from using Second Life? We’d love to hear from you! Please join us in this Education Forum thread to share your answers to the following questions:

  1. What educational organization do you represent?
  2. How do you use SL in your educational endeavours?
  3. Most importantly, what positive results have you seen from using SL?

From direct conversations, press coverage, and the like, we’ve heard of a number of organizations seeing positive results using Second Life for education, but we’re always eager to hear more and we hope you’ll add your voice to the thread.

Thanks!

Commenting on the post and requires, Peter Gray, the Lab’s Director of Global Communications told me, “We kicked off this thread because having a current collection of shared success stories is certainly helpful to our PR efforts, helps further our understanding of that community, and can also be a useful resource for people who may be interested in using SL in similar ways. We’ve spoken directly with a number of educators active in SL and certainly keep an eye out for these kinds of stories in the press as well, but we’re always eager to hear more.”

And it is not only educators and educational institutions the Lab wished to hear from, as Peter went on to state, “While we’re particularly interested in success stories from educators affiliated with educational institutions, we’d also be happy to hear from anyone who’s seen positive results using SL in their educational endeavours.”

So, if you do have a story of educational success and Second Life to tell, please be sure to join the conversation.

BURN2 Burnal Equinox – it’s all about Balance

Burnal EquinoxThe BURN2 team have announced the dates for the BURN2 Burnal Equinox, which this year will take place from Friday, March 27th through Sunday, March 29th, inclusive.

The theme for this year’s event is Balance, an explanation of which is provided in the BURN2 blog post which accompanied the announcement, and which reads in part:

Equinox is the time when the day and night are of equal length, it is also the start of both Spring and Autumn. In the virtual world we can mix all things together, so we can have bats flying down to sip the nectar from the new spring flowers in the daytime, or autumn leaves transforming into butterflies at night. As always our only limitation is our imagination.

This year we are trying hard to take all into account, welcome all time zones and all parts of the globe. With this in mind we like to remember that while Equinox is when day and night are in equal measure, it is also both Spring and Autumn/Fall at the same time with the Northern and Southern hemispheres. So what does Balance mean to you? Don’t just give us your ideas (although at least that is good too), but join in and help make some of them happen. In the spirit of balance, experienced and inexperienced, long standing members and brand new additions to the community are welcome and encouraged to take a part.

Those wishing to participate in the Burnal Equinox as a builder are invited to complete and submit the Builder Request form, while DJs, live musicians and performers who wish to take part in the event are invited to complete and submit the Performance / Stage form.

About BURN2

BURN2 is an extension of the Burning Man festival and community into the world of Second Life. It is an officially sanctioned Burning Man regional event, and the only virtual world event out of more than 100 real world Regional groups and the only regional event allowed to burn the man.

The BURN2 Team operates events year around, culminating in an annual major festival of community, art and fire in the fall – a virtual echo of Burning Man itself.
