About BURN2
BURN2 is an extension of the Burning Man festival and community into the world of Second Life. It is an officially sanctioned Burning Man regional event, and the only virtual world event out of more than 100 real world Regional groups and the only regional event allowed to burn the man.
The BURN2 Team operates events year around, culminating in an annual major festival of community, art and fire in the fall – a virtual echo of Burning Man itself.
The organisers of BURN2 have announced the event is to be extended a further week. The PR notice announcing this reads:
BURN2 2012 Extended For More Fun! Virtual festival extended by one week
In an unprecedented move, BURN2 — the only regional Burning Man festival held within a virtual world — has been extended by an additional week! This will allow even more people to visit the event, enjoy the art and have fun on the virtual playa.
While the second week will not have the extensive organized performance schedules of the first, all camps are welcome to host their own events, and are welcome to remain open and active through the 4th of November. Center camp and Osiris stages will be open for performers on a first-come, first-serve basis.
There may be additional, Hallowe’en themed events at BURN2 on the 31st of October.
Thank you all again for making this the most fun, most memorable BURN ever!
Burn Schedule Revised
As a result of this, the burning of the Man and the Temple have been pushed back a week and will now take place as follows:
Burning the Man: Saturday, November 3rd at 04:00, 12:00 noon and 20:00 SLT
Burning the Temple: Sunday, November 4th at: 04:00, 12:00 noon and 20:00 SLT
This weekend marks the start of BURN2, the Second Life sister celebration to Burning Man.
Running from October 20th through 28th, BURN2 this year is spread across six regions, again in the familiar desert theme, surrounded by sandy hills that add to the atmosphere of the event. I had the opportunity to preview the regions earlier today, and take a look at what visitors can expect.
The theme for this year’s event is “Fertility”, which echoes the theme of the Burning Man festival in Black Rock City. It explores fertility within the lens of Second Life and is strongly reflected in the works of the invited artists as well as in other installations across the regions.
BURN2 2012
Invited Artists
BURN2 2012 includes the work of five artists as this year’s Invited Artists. They are: Silene Christen, Pallina60 Loon, Fuchsia Nightfire, Nexuno Thespian and Ub Yifu. I decided to start may wanderings by locating their pieces.
Silene Christen
Silene Christen presents an interactive installation in collaboration with Martazul Zemlja and Emilio Charisma. It is described as, “An alien ship travels the universe collecting specimens of living species. When they saw the strange structures from BURN2, decided to stay and watch”.
Pallina60 Loon is well-known for her interactive art pieces, and at BURN” 2012, she presents, “Whoops – a baby!”, which she describes as portraying, “A mother nature that emerges from the arid playa to the BURN2 to play.” In keeping with her work, it is interactive – so dive in!
Fuchsia Nightfire provides a lush haven of greenery in the midst of the desert as she celebrates the heritage of the Green Man, often associated with fertility, renewal and rebirth, and which has a strong resonance through her native England. Her piece provides a welcome retreat and resting place for people as they travel across the regions, allowing them to be renewed.
BURN2 has announced that all parcels up for sale for this year’s event have been sold, and the parcel lottery has also closed. This means that land on all six regions for the event, which will take place from October 20th through 28th, 2012, has now been allocated.
The names of the lottery winners have been posted on the BURN2 website, together with details of their parcel allocations. A full BURN2 Camp Directory is also available, listing all parcels and their intended use.
BURN2 2011
At the same time the six invited artists for the event have been announced. They are: Arachne Anatra, Silene Christen, Pallina60 Loon, Fuchsia Nightfire, Nexuno Thespian and Ub Yifu.
