SL projects update, September 26th

In the meantime the viewer-side code remains available within a project viewer (3.3.3.262585), and Monty Linden has put together his plans for the next phase of the HTTP libraries project. These are currently undergoing internal review and vetting within Linden Lab, so it is likely I’ll have an update on these towards the end of next week.

Interests Lists and Object Caching

The server code for this project is now available on the beta grid, on Aditi. The Ahern, Balkanski and Beirne regions (again, note these are beta grid SLurls). The aim of the project is to both optimise the data being sent to the viewer and the information already cached on the viewer, with the aim of significantly improving object rezzing times in terms of speed and order (so objects closer to you rez before those further away, for example).

No dedicated viewer is required for testing the new code, which should show improvements in the speed and order in which objects are rezzed in those regions. To test it, you may want to make sure your Aditi account is synched with your main grid account beforehand (although it’s not vital in this particular case).

There are some known bugs in the server code Andrew Linden has been looking at and for which he’s planning to release some fixes. While working on this project, Andrew Linden removed the last of the code used to generate the old particle cloud layer, which had still been accessible to viewers still using the V1 code related to cloud generation.

Avatar Baking Service

No significant updates since my last report on this project. Nyx Linden is still seeking complex (multi-layer) system clothing outfits which can be used for testing the service on Aditi. Anyone interested in joining-in the testing should contact Nyx via e-mail or by sending him an in-world notecard, specifying the avatar name and details of the outfit itself. When volunteering, bear in mind that:

  • The outfit must be a Viewer 3 outfit, and your viewer must support the Current Outfits folder (which is used to drive the new service from the viewer end)
  • Testing will be on Aditi, and as such, the avatar and outfit must be available on Aditi. If necessary, you may need to update your Aditi inventory to make the outfit available.

Mesh Deformer and Mesh

A new version of the mesh project viewer (3-4-1-265139) has been released. As I don’t make mesh clothing, I’m unable to tell precisely what has changed, but the upload floater now contains an additional male shape upload option entitled “Male – scrawny”.

Additional male shape option

As noted in my last round-up on the deformer, Karl Stiefvater views his work on the project as largely complete, and that while the upload floater requires an intuitive GUI for the setting the standard sizing parameters, which are now encoded in the deformer, he views that as being best supplied by a TPV developer, rather than providing something himself. Sample clothing items with which to test the deformer are still required, for details on where to leave it, please see Oz Linden’s original post on the request.

Materials Processing

There are no significant updates on this project at this time.
