SU2C raises over L$3 million in Second Life

logo-2From September 12th through September 27th 2015, live performers, DJs, entertainers and venues from across Second Life came together for two weeks of music and entertainment to raise money for Stand Up 2 Cancer’s world-wide activities in funding practical cancer research and treatment.

Organised by the incredible Still Braveheart, Stand Up 2 Cancer in Second Life 2015 brought together over 150 entertainers across more than forty venues during the two weeks of the event, and the total amount raised in-world has now been tabulated – and it is impressive:

L$3,040,393

That’s around US $11,784.47. As per SU2C in Second Life’s stated aim, the money raised will be divided equally between SU2C’s work in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

“I watched so many of you put aside everything to come together and make this so successful,” Still states in her blog.

“We did something this year that no one else has done before (at least to my knowledge)….we said global and we did global As Stand Up To Cancer grows so will we.  Many that have refused to do other things came out and worked with us on this. Commenting on the two weeks to me, she added, “thank you to each and everyone that came out to an event, for together we truly made a difference.”

In addition to being able to make donations in-world, those in the USA and UK also had the option to donate directly to SU2C’s work in those countries to the SU2C in SL Team Pages – and these amounts have yet to be included in the above total. Doubtless, Still will announce those figures as soon as they are available.

In the meantime, the full transaction report for in-world receipts of donations received through the kiosks and boards placed at the participating venues is available,  although as Still notes, it may be liable to additional revision and tidying-up.

Congratulations to Still and all who were involved in SU2C 2015, whether assisting in the organisation, or as venue owners, performers or supporters. And here’s to 2016!

About SU2C

Stand Up 2 Cancer provides an innovative  approach to ending cancer, which puts funds directly where they are needed: into leading-edge cancer research and treatment, and undertaking aggressive research programmes through what is called Translational Research. 100% of all donations made through SU2C goes directly into funding this work, none is lost to “administrative costs” or put aside for CEO or executive salaries, etc.

Such is the success of this approach that as of 2014, and in the USA alone, SU2C has raised over $261 million in seven years. This money has all be used in directly supporting 141 clinical trials of possible cancer treatments, involving 750 scientists and 5,000 cancer patients, and which have spanned 112 US institutions.

The best way to keep fully abreast of SU2C activities in-world is via the Google calender of events and via Still Braveheart’s blog. – and remember, SU2C runs right through until Sunday, September 27th.  In the meantime, here’s the weekend’s line up, which may be subject to last-minute changes.

Stand Up 2 Cancer in Second Life this September

logo-2Saturday, September 12th marks the start of the 2015 Stand up 2 Cancer (SU2C) campaign in Second Life, and the venue schedules are shaping up nicely. I previewed this year’s campaign, at the end of August, so feel to treat this as a small update / teaser.

This year builds on the 2014 début event, which saw L$ 1.5 million raised over 4 days, and will see more than 150 performers, DJs and tribute bands perform at around 40 venues across Second Life in two weeks of music and fund-raising to assist the ground-breaking work of Stand Up 2 Cancer. Activities commence on Saturday, September 12th and run through until Sunday, September 27th, all brought together through the leadership of Still Braveheart, who pioneered the 2014 inaugural weekend.

Jasmine's Hollow; Inara Pey, June 2015, on Flickr The Dirty Grind over Jasmine’s Hollow  will host multiple events across the 2 weeks of SU2C fund-raising

As I noted last time around, the focus this year is not only on a much broader time span for fund-raising, but it is also looking to support far more of SU2C’s work by splitting donations between SU2C’s activities in Canada, the UK and the USA. In addition, people will be able to donate directly to SU2C’s work in through three countries by following the special donation links available at all participating venues if they’d prefer to pay direct, rather than via in-world L$ donations.

Obviously, with so many performers and venues participating, listing them in a blog like this is impossible – so do please keep a track of the SU2C in SL event schedule on Google, and via Stills’ own blog, which will have daily events, times and LMs to venues as things get under-way, as well as all the very latest news. However, to help whet appetites, here is a small sampling of what is to come (note schedules subject to possible last minute change).

About Stand Up 2 Cancer

SU2C takes an innovative  approach to ending cancer by focusing on forming “dream teams” of doctors and researchers who are directly involved in leading-edge cancer research and treatment, and then undertaking aggressive research programmes. 100% of all donations made through SU2C goes directly into funding cancer research and treatment and paying for these teams; none is lost to “administrative costs” or put aside for CEO or executive salaries, etc.

Bigger and bolder: Second Life Stands Up 2 Cancer 2015

logo-2Across four days between Thursday September 4th and Sunday September 7th in 2014, musicians and DJs from across Second Life and around the world came together under the banner SL Music Races for a Cure in order to raise money for Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C).

The brainchild of key organiser Still Braveheart, SL Music Races for a Cure was an outstanding success: L$ 1.5 million raised over the course of the four days of the event, with donations continuing after core activities had finished. All of the money was donated to SU2C’s work in accelerating the pace of cancer research and the development of effective treatments.

This year, Second Life Stands Up to Cancer is back, with an even bigger, bolder vision, and with Still once again helming the organising efforts.

2015 will see more than 150 performers, DJs and tribute bands performing at over 40 venues across Second Life between Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 27th, 2015, all with the aim of raising funds for Stan Up to Cancer’s international activities.

Obviously, with so many performers and venues participating, listing them in a blog like this is impossible – so do please keep a track of the SU2C in SL event schedule on Google, and via Stills’ own blog, which will have daily events, times and LMs to venues as things get under-way, as well as all the very latest news.

Stills' own Bring and Friend will be one of the venues headlining 2015's SL SU2C events
Still’ own Bring a Friend & Stay Awhile will be one of 40+ venues supporting 2015’s SL SU2C events

Founded in the United States in 2008 as a non-profit organisation run under the auspices of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Stand Up to Cancer was specifically established to raise funds to accelerate the pace of ground-breaking translational cancer research that can get new cancer therapies to patients quickly.

The organisation takes an innovative  approach to ending cancer by focusing on forming “dream teams” of doctors and researchers who are directly involved in leading-edge cancer research and treatment, and then undertaking aggressive research programmes (see the video at the end of this article for more on this). 100% of all donations made through SU2C goes directly into funding cancer research and treatment and paying for these teams; none is lost to “administrative costs” or put aside for CEO or executive salaries, etc.

It is this remarkable capability which led to an article in the Huffington Post’s Impact section to refer to SU2C as one of  3 Cancer Research Accelerators Worth Watching.

Lemmonrock Cafe, another of the 40+ venues supporting 2015's SL SU2C events
Lemmonrock Cafe, another of the 40+ venues supporting 2015’s SL SU2C events

Since its inception, SU2C has gained international support as well, with other countries establishing their own SU2C movements. Both Canada and the United Kingdom, for example, are fully engaged in SU2C’s work, with other countries also offering support and promotion.

In recognition of SU2C’s international scale and the direct involvement of Canada, the UK and the USA in spearheading efforts, all monies raised during the Second Life Stands Up to Cancer events will be evenly split between SU2C’s work in these three countries.

Also, in what is quite possibly a first for Second Life, all of the SU2C venues will have special kiosks available which will allow Canadian, UK and US SL residents to make donations directly to the SU2C work in their own country, via links to the SL SU2C Team web pages (UK and US) and the main SU2C Canada website.

What’s more, because the direct donations to SU2C UK and SU2C USA are going through the SL SU2C Team pages, the amounts donated this way can be added to the total amount raised through in-world donations, presenting a clearer picture of how much was raised for SU2C through the activities and generosity of Second Life residents.

Second Life Stands Up to Cancer is shaping-up to be another extraordinary event, one that I hope to be bringing further news and updates about as the dates approach, as well as looking forward to catching at least some of the performers and shows.  So, mark September 12th through 27th in your diary and calendar, and get ready to Stand Up to Cancer, because this is where the end of cancer begins.

Roxeter: where the arts meet in Second Life

Roxeter; Inara Pey, May 2015, on Flickr Roxeter (Flickr) – click any image to enlarge

Friend and content creator Vivienne Daguerre tapped me about her new collaborative venture, Roxeter, located on her own region, bearing the same name and which is also still the home to her Black Rose brand.

“Roxeter is intended to be a place supporting and featuring SL artists and live musicians,” Vivienne informed me, “and in future we hope to add writers and theatre performances to the list.”

Having opened in March, Roxeter already offers a number of indoor and outdoor venues for music and live performances, and the theatre is currently under construction, with work progressing well.

Roxeter; Inara Pey, May 2015, on Flickr Roxeter (Flickr)

The region itself has something of a New England feel to it, with the core venues built around a small town-like locale centred around two squares. The first of these features an open air café which offers something of a social hub, around which sit a small number of commercial properties, the Roxeter library, and the pub (which offers an indoor venue for music) with the black rose radio station and media centre right next door. Beyond these sits an open-air music venue flanked on the one side by a large events stage built out over a beach, and on the other by the theatre.

The second square, this one with a fountain as its central feature, can be found behind the library building, with the Roxeter Place for the Visual Arts facing the library facade across it. At the time of my visit, Roxeter Place featured small displays of works by Darkyn Dover and John (Johannes1977), both of whom I admire for their exceptional photography, and Altarn Damon Bach – whom I admit is a new name to me, but whose work is equally stunning.

Roxeter; Inara Pey, May 2015, on Flickr Roxeter (Flickr)

Community is very much a part of Vivienne’s focus in Second Life, and this is reflected in the fact that not only offers venues to the arts and music communities, but uphill from the Roxeter Place for the Visual Arts still a number of private houses available for rent to interested parties (please keep in mind some are already occupied); there is a small realtor’s office down in the town offering details of the available lots. Finally, and as no town should be without one, just across a narrow stream sits the local church and manse. The latter is also a private residence, so again, do keep that in mind when visiting, although you might want to look around the church grounds for the entrance to the catacombs below!

From this description, you might think everything sounds a little cramped in the region. Well, not so; considerable time and effort has gone into developing Roxeter and its venues, so the entire region has a feeling of open spaces as well as having something of a small town look. Indeed, with the off-sim islands on one side and craggy peaks on the other, the entire effect is that of being in a coastal town as it looks out over the open sea.

Roxeter; Inara Pey, May 2015, on Flickr Roxeter (Flickr)

A major aspect of Roxeter is that it is entirely non-profit: the region is paid for entire out of the revenue generated by Vivienne’s Black Rose store (which is located high overhead and can be reached by the teleport point inside the little Black Rose shop in the town), with the aim of the venues here being, as Vivienne described, to promote music and the arts in Second Life and provide a means by which artists, musicians, DJ’s the theatre groups can present their music and work.

Obviously, operating a group of venues like this takes time and effort, and Vivienne has brought together a team of talented individuals to help keep Roxeter moving forward.  Freya Lovenkraft is managing the live entertainments, and has started a video series, Behind the SL Music, hosted at Roxeter’s Black Rose Radio, in which she interviews and chats to people from SL’s music industry. Her first interview, with Mason Thorne, is available for viewing.

Artist Shakti Adored curates the Roxeter Place for Visual Arts, while Ercila Robbins manages the library, which had a literary / knowledge focus. Filling out the current team is Trinity Taryn Ansome, who is Roxeter’s Second Life Arts, Music and Culture blogger.

Roxeter; Inara Pey, May 2015, on Flickr Roxeter (Flickr)

All told, Roxeter is quite a superb undertaking with an already very impressive events calendar. There is also an in-world group to keep abreast of news and event notices, while all the latest from the region can also be found on the Roxeter web site.

If you’re looking for a new music / arts / theatre venue, then this is a place you should definitely make a point of visiting.
