1920s Berlin Project celebrates 7 years in Second Life

1920s Berlin Project

Monday, May 30th marks the start of a week-long celebration at the 1920 Berlin Project, marking the 7th anniversary of the community’s founding.

Offering a trip back in time to the inter-wars years of Berlin, the project is one of Second Life’s success stories, often featured in the media, visited by Lab staff and – most importantly of all – enjoyed by those who have made their homes there.

While there are always activities and events taking place within the city, the week of May 30th through Sunday, June 5th will see a special series of events held to celebrate the 7th anniversary. Among the latter will be a photo contest and the Miss Berlin 1929 contest.

The Photo contest theme is The People of Berlin, with a first prize of L$1,000 and a second prize of L$500 on offer. For full details on the entry requirements, please see the 7th anniversary blog post. However, in brief, entrants are invited to capture a picture of people at work or at play within the Berlin 1920s Project and in period costume, and to upload their images to the 1920 Berlin Project Flickr group, no later than June 3rd. The winning entries will be announced on Saturday, June 4th at the Adlon Tea Dance (see the events schedule, below).

The Miss Berlin 1929 Contest will be a full beauty pageant, featuring both swimsuit and evening wear, and will be held at the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Adlon. The compère will be Miss Sasa Steigerwald and music will be provided by DJ Myron Byron. On offer to the winner are a range of prizes supplied by Sonatta Morales, Heinrich Grau and Clarrington Enterprises. For further information on the contest and how to enter, please refer to the contest Facebook page.

Note that visitors to 1920 Berlin Project are generally asked to wear suitable period dress when visiting the city (although this rule will be relaxed on Sunday, June 5th). To help with this, there is a selection of free outfits and accessories at the 1920s Berlin Project landing point,  together with some special freebies for the celebratory week.

Commenting on the anniversary celebrations, 1920s Berlin Project founder Jo Yardley said:

In our fantastic neighbourhood people have been extremely creative, active and something great and rare is the result. I cannot put into words how much the sim and its people means to me and to my delight it means a lot to many of those who live there as well.

On the 30th of May 2016 we’re celebrating the 7th (!) anniversary of our sim and we’re going to celebrate with 7 days of events!  We hope you come and be part of the celebrations.

So why not capture a taste of history and hop over to the 1920s Berlin Project during the week?

Supporting Alberta in Second Life

CourageWe’re all by now familiar with the situation in Alberta, Canada, where a wildfire broke out on April 30th, 2016. By Wednesday, May 11th, and still out of control, it covered an estimated 241,000 hectares (930.5 square miles).

As the firs spread during the first weeks of May, so it engulfed the city of Fort McMurray, forcing the evacuation of almost 90,000 people.

Many of those affected by the fire have lost everything: homes, jobs, the basic necessities of life, and are having to be placed in temporary accommodation and shelters, prompting the Canadian Red Cross to launch the Alberta Fires Appeal.

Within Second Life, and in response to a plea from a Second Life resident directly affected by this tragedy, Models Giving Back have launched The Courage Event. Between May 15th and the end of the month, 38 designers are providing over 50 exclusive items that will not be sold again, with proceeds from the sales going to the Canadian Red Cross and the Alberta Fires Appeal.

The funds raised will be donated in two lots; the first halfway through the event, in order  to obtain the matching funds the Canadian Government is providing, and then the second donation will be made at the close of the event. Totals and donation receipts from the Canadian Red Cross will be posted on the Models Giving Back Revamped website, and on the Models Giving Back Facebook page.

The Courage Event. organised by Models Giving Back, runs from May 15th through to May 31st, with 38 designers offering 50 exclusive, never to be re-sold items to raise money for the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal

ALS awareness week 2016 in Second Life

Harvey Memorial Ensemble ALS Awareness Week
Harvey Memorial Ensemble ALS Awareness Week

Opening on Sunday, February 21st and running through until Sunday, February 28th is the Harvey Memorial Ensemble ALS Awareness Week, a charity event intended to both raise awareness of ALS and raise funds for continued research into the disease.

Dedicated to the memory of ALS victim Harvey22 Albatros, the week focuses on music and art, with both live performers and DJs offering sets throughout the week, and a number of SL artists offering pieces for auction, with all proceeds as well as donations during the week going to AISLA, the Associazone Italiana Sclerosi Laterale Amiotrofica.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), sometimes also referred to as motor neurone disease (MND) or the synonyms Lou Gehrig’s disease and Charcot disease,  is a specific disorder that involves the death of neurons that control voluntary muscles. For about 90-95% of all diagnosed cases, the precise cause of the disease is unknown; for the remaining 5-10% of diagnosed cases, it is inherited from the sufferer’s parents. There is no known cure, and symptoms generally first become apparent around the age of 60 (or 50 in inherited cases). The average survival from onset to death is three to four years. In Europe and the United States, the disease affects about 2 people per 100,000 per year.

Harvey Memorial Ensemble ALS Awareness Week
Harvey Memorial Ensemble ALS Awareness Week – Drops of Memory, a tribute to ALS victim Micol Coche, featuring images of her times in SL, as taken by Micol and her friends, and built by Rubin Mayo

In 2015, the Harvey Memorial Ensemble ALS Awareness Week raised €840 (approximately L$234,000) for AISLA. This year once again sees a host of live performers and DJs participating in the music events, and there will be an auction of artwork from Bryn Oh, Mistero Hifeng, Solkide Auer, and Kicca Igaly. Bids for the works they are offering can be made via the auction flower alongside of each piece, and the winning bids will be announced at the closing of the week, on February 28th.

Isle of Love: Supporting Team Fox in Second Life this Valentine’s

Isle of View
Isle of View

Linden Lab has announced the return of the Isle of View for Valentine’s Day, together with an opportunity to help raise money for Team Fox and the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF), and the return of two old favourites.

Kiosks at the Isle of View are offering a range of gifts – candy, chocolates, bunting, teddy bear, roses – any of which can be purchased and sent to a loved one. All of the proceeds from gift purchases will go to Team Fox, the fund-raising arm of MJFF, and the Lab are also guaranteeing to match the final total raised and so double the donation.

The Love Pavilion, Isle of View

And that’s not all. This year sees the return of two popular items from times past, as the blog post notes:

We understand that love is sometimes complicated. You have got to work hard to make it work – and we’re not afraid of a little tough love. On February 12th from 10am – 12pm and 2-4pm SLT we’ll be mixing things up with the return of Dunk-a-Linden and Hug-a-Linden booths! You may just meet your virtual Valentine while waiting for a chance to dunk or hug a Linden – and if you don’t – hey you still got to dunk or hug a Linden! It’s a win-win situation.

So make a note for Friday, February 12th!

To find out more about Team Fox, the MJFF and Team Fox in Second Life, you can read my article here. And don’t forget Team Fox is also supported by Creations for Parkinson’s in-world as well.
