SL13B Music Fest auditions

The first round of the SL13B Music Fest Auditions
The first round of the SL13B Music Fest Auditions, held in Bay City

Friday, June 3rd saw the first round of auditions take place for the SL13B Music Fest. The event saw Linden staffers Xiola, Torley, Rider and Simon join music fans and local community members in gathering at an outdoor stage in Bay City to hear some of those who applied for the auditions (see my blog post on the auditions announcement).

Held between 12:00 noon and 2:00pm, as originally scheduled, the event venue hadn’t been advertised at the time of the original announcement, although SL residents were invited to attend as members of the audience. There didn’t appear to by any follow-up announcement on the selected venue (at least, none that I saw), and I only found out about it by dint of perusing the Destination Guide out of curiosity given there had been no update to the original official blog post, some 20 minutes after the event had started!

Nevertheless, those who did get the news and had hopped along to the event were all enjoying themselves (Xiola was bopping along nicely!), with folks taking the opportunity to join the judging panel seated in deck chairs, or simply standing in the open field and showing their appreciation for the acts.

If you’re interested in attending the second round of auditions as a member of the audience, you can do so from 18:00 through 20:00 SLT on Saturday, June 4th, and the same venue. The music fest itself will form a part of the upcoming SL13B celebrations later this month.

SL13B: press day applications and teaser video

Second Life’s 13th anniversary takes place in June 2016, and already anticipation is mounting about the week-long event, which will take place between Sunday, June 19th and Sunday June 26th.

One of the popular pre-event activities which occurs each year is the Press Day, which presents bloggers, machinimists and other “press” with the opportunity to have early access to the celebration regions, tour them, find out about the infrastructure and build, take photograph, record video and (above all) blog about the forthcoming coming celebrations.

This year, the Press Day will take place on Saturday, June 18th. If you would like to participate, then please make sure you complete the Press Access application sooner rather than later.

I’ve again been asked to produce some teaser videos for this years event, and so to hopefully further whet appetites, I’ll leave you with the first, and a reminder of the key dates.

Lab announces 13th anniversary music fest and invites auditions

secondlifeUpdate, June 3rd: the auditions will be held on Friday, June 3rd at Enter Bay City, between 12:00 noon and 14:00 SLT, and again on Saturday, June 4th 18:00 to 20:00 SLT at the same location.

While the traditional Second Life Birthday celebrations are now pretty much coordinated and run by the community – hence the title Second Life Birthday Community Celebrations, the Lab has a track record of sharing in the celebratory mood around the time of SL’s anniversary through various promotions, gifts, and so on, often as an overall part of the community celebrations.

In 2015, the Lab held an Anniversary Music Festival, for example (and among other events) – and they’re doing the same again in 2016, as Xiola Linden has blogged:

Last year’s auditions turned out to be an incredible showcase of some of the diverse musical talent in Second Life. It was its own mini-musical-fest – with nearly 50 musicians pulling out all the stops in front of the Second Life music community. This bite-sized showcase led to the final line up for Music Fest. It’s definitely worth reading this audition day wrap up from musician and Second Life Resident Zak Claxton on his blog from May of last year.

This year, once again we’re hoping to draw out all you guitarists, bassists, drummers, singers, tambourine shakers and other music makers to come audition for the festival. All genres are welcome! From bands to solo acts, opera to rock and roll – we encourage anyone to sign up for consideration. The Second Life Music Fest is an opportunity to perform at one of the biggest celebrations in Second Life, and it’s a paid gig!

L12B Community Celebration; Inara Pey, June 2015, on Flickrast year, the Music Fest was held during the SL12B Community Celebrations at the SL12B Ixtlan Stage, designed by Cube Republic

Those interested in taking part are invited to complete the audition application form – and to do so no later than Thursday, May 26th. The blog post notes that completion of the application does not signify a commitment on the part of the artist to take part, nor a guarantee they’ll be called upon to audition before a panel of judges comprising Lab personnel and residents.

Musicians who are selected to audition will receive word directly from the Lab via e-mail. Those successful in their 5-minute audition, as judged by a panel of Lab staff and residents, will be invited to perform a 30-minute set at the Second Life Music Fest, and (subject to the Lab’s terms and conditions) receive payment for doing so.

The auditions themselves will be on the following dates and times:

  • Friday, June 3rd 12:00 noon to 14:00 SLT
  • Saturday, June 4th 18:00 to 20:00 SLT

The venue for the auditions is currently TBA, and I’ll post news & update this post once the location as been announced.

So, if this sounds like it might be your kind of gig as a musician – follow the links and apply.

SL13B: sharing the adventure in Second Life

via SL13B website
via SL13B website

The dates have been set for this year’s Second Life anniversary celebrations.

SL13B will kick-off at noon SLT on Sunday, June 19th, and run for a full week of celebrations, entertainment and activities, through until Sunday, June 26th, 2016 inclusive. The theme for 2013 is The Shared Adventure.

The blog post announcing event reads in part:

Second Life has been home to countless virtual adventures, and continues to break new ground. Each of us shares in the adventure, as our creations are enjoyed by avatars from far and wide.

What does adventure stir in you? Is it an endless vista of unexplored jungles and ocean depths, a space opera, or even intrigue in dimly lit alleyways. What dangers are afoot, and how will you and your cohorts seek to overcome them?

The key dates for the celebration themselves are:

  • Saturday, June 18th: Press Day
  • Sunday, June 19th, noon SLT: Opening Day
  • Thursday June 23rd: The Birthday
  • Sunday, June 26th: end of entertainments and performances
  • Monday, June 27th through Sunday, July 3rd: Sims open for viewing, no performances

In keeping with the shared experience theme,  and in a departure from previous SL13B events, the organisers are inviting Second Life creators and builders to apply for the chance to design and build one of the celebration’s entertainments stages or public areas.

In all there are six public areas people can apply to develop. They are, in brief:

  • The Cake Stage: the centrepiece of the celebration, spanning a square of four regions with a total available LI of 32,000 (8,000 per region, with the stage expected to straddle the corners of all 4 regions). The cake can be constructed in whole or in parts from prims, mesh or sculpts, with mesh preferred.
  • The Live Stage: for singers and “live” entertainments and set within a single region with a 10,000 LI allowance. The stage needs to be suitable for solo acts as well as moderate ‘band’ sized acts, with the successful applicant responsible for developing the entire region.
  • DJ Stage:  straddling two regions with a total LI of 10,000, this stage is for DJ and other pre-recorded acts. The successful applicant is responsible for the decoration of both regions.
  • Stage Right: again straddling two regions and with a 5,000 LI allowance, this stage will be used for a mixture of DJ and live entertainment, with the successful applicant once more responsible for developing both regions.
  •  Auditorium: straddling two regions and covering approximately half of each, and with a LI allowance of 2,500 per region, the auditorium will be used mainly for presentations, talks, workshops and classes. It should be split into a minimum of two sections, with one part of it should be capable of seating up to 70 avatars
  • The Welcome Area: Taking up a full region and with a LI allowance of 8,000 and a total ground area of 57,600 square metres, the Welcome Area is the point at which the majority of visitors will arrive at the celebration regions.

Again, please note that the above descriptions offer a brief outline of the build requirements for each area, all of which have very specific requirements which must be considered when applying. for full details on these, please refer to the SL13B Infrastructure Build Requirements.

If you are interested in applying to design and build any of these areas, please email either  doctorgascoigne-at-gmail.com or diana.renoir-at-gmail.com or contact them in-world.
