SL22B: Performer Applications Open

via Linden Lab

June 2025 will mark the 22nd anniversary of Second Life opening to public access – and as has been recently announced, celebrations to mark the event will be taking place between Friday, June 20th, 2025 and Sunday, July 20th.

Theme

This theme for 2025 is Myths and Legends, which the Lab describes thus:

It reflects the Second Life experience because we are all the heroes of our own adventures! The emphasis is on the characters and stories people create in SL both personally and within their communities.

Performer Applications

Are you a DJ who can spin up a great party set or a live performer who can jam all night? You might be one of the grid’s amazing Dance companies, or perhaps you’re a Particle Performer? Do you do tarot readings? Perhaps you are a Roleplay guru who has adventures to share; or even a scripter extraordinaire with mad skills ready to teach an intro class in LSL.

– From the SL22B Performer Application form

Applications for SL22B performers were officially opened on March 27th, 2025. Key points for those planning to apply:

  • Applications will be accepted through until Monday, May 19th, 2025.
  • Submission of an application does not guarantee a performance slot. However:
    • Accepted performers will be informed via a follow-up in-world note delivered to the user name given on the application form.
    • Performers can then reserve a performance time, and performances will be scheduled in the order applied.
  • Maturity ratings and requirements:
    • All performances with the G-rated estate regions must be in keeping with the Second Life General Maturity Rating (e.g. no nudity –artistic or otherwise–, no Adult animations and/or gestures, furniture, etc, must not contain Adult poses / animations, etc.).
    • Performers applying for slot on the event stage within the Adult rated region will be permitted more explicit lyrics and adult attire.
  • Set-up time, props and tip jars:
    • All performances are limited to one-hour (including set-up time).
    • There is a 350 LI allowance for props and rezzable items for DJ and live music shows. A limited DJ set-up is allowed (e.g. spin table, speakers, small light emitters/effects) – but performers should not create set / backdrops that cover the entire stage.
    • Dance troupes or other performing groups requiring purpose-built stages might be permitted up to 1000 LI, as deemed appropriate by the Mole Coordinators.
    • Performers are asked to show up an hour in advance of their scheduled performance time in order to make sure everything is working and ready.
    • DJs, live artists and people performing on the designated events stages are permitted to rez ONE low-prim tip jar. Donation kiosks are not allowed.
  • Please read all the rules and requirements as given in the application form, linked-to below.

SL22B: theme, exhibitor applications now open

via Linden Lab

June 2025 will mark the 22nd anniversary of Second Life opening to public access – and as we’ve all come to expect, the month will mark the start of several weeks of events and celebrations running into July under the umbrella of the Second Life Birthday (SLB) otherwise know for this year as SL22B.

On Thursday, March 13th, Linden Lab officially announced the dates and theme of this year’s festivities,  and opened applications for those wishing to create and host an exhibition within the SL22B event regions.

Dates and Theme

This year the SLB festivities will open on Friday, June 20th, 2025 and will run through until Sunday, July 20th. The theme for 2025 is Myths and Legends, which the Lab describes thus:

It reflects the Second Life experience because we are all the heroes of our own adventures! The emphasis is on the characters and stories people create in SL both personally and within their communities.

However, as has been the case over the last several birthday events, exhibitions are not confined to the theme itself, with the Lab additionally noting:

Share your Second Life passions with us. Your interests. Your communities. Your world! Every year we celebrate because of you, the amazing and creative Residents who have chosen to call Second Life home. What has drawn you into this world, and what keeps you here? These annual festivities are an opportunity to show us what fuels your Second Life. Let’s celebrate that together!

Dropping in to MadPea Unlimited courtesy of LL’s gift

The MadPea Unlimited Hub, January 2025

On Monday, December 23rd, 2024, Linden Lab announced a special holiday gift for all Second Life users: six months access to the upcoming 2025 seasons 1 and 2 of MadPea Unlimited, which commences on January 1st, 2025. After allowing for the initial rush, I hopped over early on January 2nd, 2025 to take a peep at what is on offer.

To recap on the offer: Linden Lab is covering the cost of 6 months access to the MadPea Unlimited premium group, which gives subscribers early access to MadPea’s new games and experiences product releases, gifts, and hunts, as well as access to MadPea’s library of available in-world games and experiences. Subscriptions usually cost L$6,000 for three months – so the total value of this gift to users is $12,000 per person, and the offer runs through until the end of June 2025. An important note with the gift is that is does not require any sign-up or commitment to any on-going subscription; to participate, all residents need to do is hop along to the MadPea Unlimited region from January 1st, 2025 and join the fun.

Become Benoit Blanc (only hopefully without Daniel Craig’s accent!) and find out whodunnit in Merry Mayhem at Frostwood Manor – just make sure you don’t die in the process!

All activities and games are accessed via the Discovery hub. This provides access to all of the current in-world games and adventures, with the Weekly Drops and Monthly Collectables pick-up point lying beyond it (with the first drops of 2025 due on January 8th, 2025). One thing to note is that MadPea utilise SL Experiences, so you’ll have to accept the Experience in order for the games and adventures to work.

Each game / adventure is accessed via a dedicated portal. alongside of each portal is a kiosk offering details of the game / adventure, which includes a general rating for the activity – E for everyone (roughly equivalent to SL’s G rating), M for Mature (roughly equivalent to SL’s M rating) and M +17, indicating it contains themes such as death, murder, etc.). The kiosks also supply the dedicated HUD for a given activity, and provide information on things like the number of achievements / rewards which can be obtained. A HUD might be presented as a direct-wear / add item, or as a package giver that includes the HUD and other items. Note that while a SL Experience is utilised, this does not extend to HUD attachment – you should add them done manually.

MadPea Unlimited activity portals and information kiosks

For January 2025, the activities comprise:

  • Four Escape Room style challenges of varying levels of difficulty and length, comprising Ghostly Goal and Wizard’s Tower and Forsaken Funhouse (all rated E), and Deadly Dungeon (Rated M 17+).
  • Three adventure- style games comprising a horror story called Insidious Island (rated M) and The Kidnapping (rated E), and Jewel of the Nile (rated E)
  • Ascension, a puzzle challenge
  • Two murder mysteries – Merry Mayhem at Frostwood Manor (rated E) and The Naughty List Murders (rated M 17+), the latter forming the latest MadPea addition.
Try your hand at solving puzzles as your ascend the tower

Games are variable in length, the average being between 2 and 3 hours, with Forsaken Funhouse lasting up to around 8 hours. However, this time does not necessarily have to be done all at once, it is possible to leave, detach the HUD and leave, then wear it and return (with The Naughty Murders List, for example, you can add the HUD, open the Mad City map and click on the last location you visited and then resume).

I took a quick run-through of the two murder mysteries, and found the basics to be broadly similar: interacting with static characters who interact with you in both voice and text, as you move through a series of locations seeking clues, your progress and other information recorded on your game HUD. In this I found both a little formulaic – but that’s my fault for running through both mysteries back-to-back, rather than mixing two different game types.

One of the Game HUDs

That said, once involved, I did – as used to be the case when I was a regular at MadPea –  become engrossed in working out who had done what (although in the case of The Naughty List Murders, I believed I’d figured the likely culprit roughly half-way through the game, based on a comment passed by one of the characters, and ended-up continuing to see if I was right – which again is half the fun with whodunits (and it turned out I was right, in part)).

A nice touch is the the majority of the games are geared towards group play, so people can work together on them. Check the information kiosks to conform whether group play is intended – just work in IM with friends. One thing I would say is that given these are still the early days of the gift being available (at least at the time of writing). As such, the games can get busy.

“One thing’s sure. Sebastian Blackwood is dead — murdered — and somebody’s responsible!” (with apologies to MadPea and Plan 9 From Outer Space 😀 )

When announced, the offer of MadPea Unlimited access gather some negative responses through various mediums. Personally, I don’t see the harm; MadPea have always provided engaging entertainment, and an arrangement like this is a nice way for LL to both encourage users to have a little fun and making many who many not be aware of MadPea or have never tried their Unlimited subscription to give them a try; and if that encourages some to support MadPea by taking out a subscription for membership after the gift period ends – that can’t be bad, can it?

Previewing The Dickens Project 2024 in Second Life

The Dickens Project, a seasonal celebration of the life, times and work of Charles Dickens with a focus on what is perhaps his most famous story, A Christmas Carol, officially opens to the public on Friday, December 6th, 2024.

Now a tradition within Second Life – the first edition of the event was held in 2012 (and which itself grew out of a special presentation originally made in 2008), the Dickens Project offers a mix of reading, storytelling, music, events and activities. It is organised and presented by Seanchai Library and offers visitors an immersive environment across two regions evocative of Victorian England in Dickens’ time. Within this settings, Seanchai Library and friends will be hosting a variety of events and activities, including readings of A Christmas Carol.

This year brings with it new features and tools to help visitors feel more immersed within the setting. These include:

  • A Personal Audio HUD (developed by Shandon Loring) and a Map HUD: (developed by Arrehn Oberlander) designed to assist guests in connecting the words of Dickens’ novella with the created environment and sorting through the many “Points of Interest” across both regions of the setting. Both will be available at the Welcome Centre and various locations around the Project. The Map HUD required accepting the Caledonian Studios SL Experience which is also used for the regions’ teleportal system.
The Dickens Project 2024 Feature Markers
  • Feature Markers to help guests discover points of engagement including task animations. These comprise:
    • The red hammers icon: indicating that here you can perform a task such as baking a pie, hammering out a horseshoe, chopping wood, weaving baskets or making gingerbread.
    • The blue camera icon: indicating a pose scene is available for you and your friends to use and take pictures.
    • The green people icon: denoting that there is a sitting action available including things like drinking tea and cakes in a shop, playing a game. There are also scenes available where you can mind a store, or a market stall, or tend a fire.

Readings and Events

The Dickens performing community is back in force this year, including opening weekend performances by Angelicus Boy Choir, the opening celebration of the Hermes Kondor art show, and a reading presentation by Poet Klannex Northmead from Dickens’ “Little Dorrit.”

These are all in addition to the live story reading programs which Seanchai Library is known for.  The popular Carol Week will begin on Friday, December 20th with a section of Dickens’ novella presented live each day in a Story Tour presentation at the sites on the estate inspired by the story.

Also returning for 2024 is the Community Virtual Library, once again providing research and information on Victorian life in the time of Dickens’ works; the Angelicus Boy Choir; the Raglan Shire Tiny Carollers; the Seanchai readers and friends, and, of course a broad range of entertainment and parties featuring DJs and live musicians from across Second Life.

The full calendar of events for the Project is provided below – note all times are SLT.

To keep up-to-date on daily events and updates, be sure to keep an eye on the Seanchai Library website.

Important Note: The Dickens Project uses several Experience-based systems including Caledonian Studios, Quantum Products, and MetaHarpers Interactive Theatre for teleportation and to enhance guests interaction. If you are prompted to join any of these Experiences during your visit, please ensure you accept them.

Dickens Project Art Show

Returning for 2024 is the Dickens Project Art Show, which is currently open (until December 16th, 2024) to submissions from artists wishing to participate.

This is a non-juried show which will formally open on December 22nd, 2024 with a special opening celebration at 11:00 SLT on that day, and will run through until January 5th, 2025. Artists are invited to submit 2D art (some 3D art can be accommodated by arrangement), with the organisers given priority to art with the following themes:

  • Elements of The Dickens Project.
  • Victorian Christmas.
  • Winter beauty.

Multiple submissions are allowed, but the number of works shown per artist may be limited in order to allow as many artists to be represented as possible.

Submissions (and enquiries about the Art Show) should be made via notecard to Stevie Basevi, with submissions no later that December 16th, 2024. These notecards should include: the artist’s full SL Name (that is, Display Name and account name); the artist’s physical world time zone or best SL times when they can be contacted; a brief description of the piece + an artist biography; a *preview* image of the art to be submitted (i.e. a lower-resolution, thumbnail copy in order to provide the organisers with an idea of the work – not the art itself); and optional links to a related website, Flickr page, etc., for the artist.
