Of Kris Kringle, snowbound towns and a Dickens of a tale

It’s time to kick-off another week of fabulous story-telling in voice, brought to Second Life and Kitely by the staff and volunteers at the Seanchai Library.

As always, all times SLT / PDT, and unless otherwise stated, events will be held on the Seanchai Library’s home on Imagination Island, or at their Kitely Homeworld.

Monday December 8th, 19:00: Witches, Magic and Other Strange Things

Gyro Muggins returns to conclude One Foot in the Grave. “Something’s wrong with his foot.  Something’s wrong with her foot.  There might be something wrong with the doctor and there is definitely something wrong with The Camel’s grave.”

Tuesday December 9th,19:00: A Christmas Story

With Kayden Oconnell

Wednesday December 10th, 19:00: Miracle on 34th Street

Caledonia Skytower commences an adaptation of the George Seaton / Valentine Davies Christmas classic film of the same name, which first appeared in 1947 starring Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Natalie Wood and Edmund Gwenn, and which has been subject to a number of remakes and updates, including the 1994 version starring Sir Richard Attenborough.

A novella based on the film, also penned by Davies, was published simultaneously with the film’s release, and was itself turned into a stage play in about 2006 by Will Severin, Patricia Di Benedetto Snyder and John Vreeke.

Join Caledonia as she retells the story of how Kris Kringle is hired by Macy’s to become their “Santa Claus” in what is regarded as a classic tale for Christmas.

Thursday December 11th

19:00 Christmasville

christmasvilleThe first volume in Michael Dutton’s trilogy of the same name, Christmasville, published in 2012, introduces us the to Mary Jane Higgins and a cast of characters in the little town of Christmasville.

It’s a strange place, is Christmasville. Trains may come and go, but no-one gets on or off them – no-one actually knows where they go or from whence they came. What lies beyond the forest and the hills surrounding the town is utterly unknown to the inhabitants. The town itself is a place where grass has never been seen, and seasons are unknown; where elephants, giraffes and camels and more are all creatures of myth – and where everyone accepts things just as they are.

Except Mary Jane Higgins. To her, something in not quite right; she has an odd feeling, one that causes her to take the forbidden route across the train tracks. Leaving Christmasville, forever snow-covered and white, with its year of only two months – December and January – behind, Mary Jane sets out to find the truth. Along the way she encounters  shepherd boy with his lamb, and three men riding camels! And ultimately, she discovers the truth about Christmasville and its strange ways and appearance…

Join Shandon Loring as he opens the pages of this delightful story for young adults.

21:00 Seanchai Late Night

With Finn Zeddmore.

Saturday December 13th, Seanchai Kitely

09:00: A Christmas Carol

Caledonia Skytower and Shandon Loring commence a reading of Charles Dickens’ seasonal classic. Dare you say “bah, humbug!” or will you go in, so that Shandon may know you better?! Will you let Cale reveal to you all things present, shaped by the past, or will you try to avoid her showing you those things yet to come? Step into the Seanchai Library and settle into one of the traditions of Christmas!

Please check with the Seanchai Library SL’s blog for updates and for additions or changes to the week’s schedule. The featured charity for November – December is Heifer International, which is working with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.

What’s in the Box? be a part of Santalarity and find out!

SantalaritySantalarity, the BURN2 seasonal event, will this year kick-off at 10:00 SLT on Saturday, December 13th ans run for 24 hours.

Santalarity is BURN2’s antithesis of the typical  rushed holiday season focused on profits and buying, on unrealistic expectations and joy found in aisle 3.

So reads the event’s press release, which continues:

Instead we ask, “What’s in the box?” What do we want to give? We invite you to come to the playa, to observe artists’ interpretations of these questions; to skate, dance, drum and be present when we Burn the Box. Before the Box is burned,  messages left by visitors to the playa will be read, which will express what they would like to give. To give without expectation of return. To give for the pure joy of giving.

The event itself will start with an initial drumming by the Lamplighters. The Box will burn twice during the event, at 12:00 noon SLT and again at 20:00 SLT.

Artists and builders wishing to participate in Santalarity by building to the theme of What’s in the Box.  Land plots are free, and applications should be made via the What’s in the Box application form.

DJs and live performers who would like to participate in the event are invited to submit their details through the Santalarity Performer sign-up form. Questions about performance scheduling should be addressed to the BURN2 Performance Lead, Larree Quixote in-world.

About BURN2

BURN2 is an extension of the Burning Man festival and community into the world of Second Life. It is an officially sanctioned Burning Man regional event, and the only virtual world event out of more than 100 real world Regional groups and the only regional event allowed to burn the man.

The BURN2 Team operates events year around, culminating in an annual major festival of community, art and fire in the fall – a virtual echo of Burning Man itself.

The bard awaits the pleasure of your company

ShakespeareAs one of the oldest theatre companies within Second Life, the Avatar Repertory Theatre (ART) operates from their theatre in Cookie, and has been at the forefront of bringing  diverse, live theatre to a widening audience through virtual performances since 2008.

Productions have included first-time realisations of works by living playwrights, through to major immersive productions such as their own adaptations of the classic Greek Drama Oedipus Rex and the works of Lewis Carroll via Alice in WonderSLand and Through the Looking Glass. In addition, the company’s theatre has played host to many and varied events and performances, including Seanchai Library’s The War of the Worlds, which I reviewed during its initial run in 2011).

However, while operating a theatre company in a virtual world is a lot more cost-effective than doing so in the physical world, it is by no means free. So, in October and early November, the company held a very special auction, the proceeds of which will go towards meeting their on-going running costs. The Shakespeare By Request Auction offered Second Life residents the opportunity to bid for a member of the Avatar Repertory Theatre company to perform a selection from the works of William Shakespeare.

Shakespeare By Request saw members of the ART company offer their talents for auction to help met the company's running costs. On Friday, November 21st, 2014, you can join the audience as ART presents the results of that auction in the special Shakespeare By Request evening.

Now all of those who took part in the auction and residents of Second Life as a whole, are cordially invited to attend the results of this auction in the Shakespeare By Request evening.

Commencing at 17:00 SLT on Friday, November 21st, at the ART theatre in Cookie, members of the ART company will present the winning bidder’s requests. On offer will be pieces from Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V, Hamlet – and more!

So why not join the audience and enjoy a unique series of Shakespearian performances – and if you’re so minded, offer a donation to additionally help ART meet their running costs.
