BURN2 2016: bringing Da Vinci’s Workshop to Second Life

DV-posterBURN2 2016 will be opening its gates on Saturday, October 15th, and will run through until Sunday, October 23rd 2016, culminating in the burning of the Man the Temple on the closing weekend of the event.

The theme for this year is Da Vinci;’s Workshop, which the official Burning Man website describes (in part) thus:

Burning Man’s 2016 art theme is inspired by the Italian Renaissance of the middle fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, when a historic convergence of inspired artistry, technical innovation and enlightened patronage launched Europe out of mediaevalism and into modernity. Our story will focus on the republic of Florence, for it was here, in a city-state of about the same size and population as Black Rock City, that humanist ideals, a rediscovery of science, and funding from a newly moneyed class of entrepreneurs fuelled a revolutionary cultural movement that redefined Western civilization. Five centuries later, we will attempt to recreate this potent social alchemy by combining Burning Man art, maker culture and creative philanthropy to make Black Rock City the epicentre of a new renaissance.

The plot sale is now open, as is the Plot Lottery and Juried Art Applications. You can purchase a plot for BURN2 directly from the kiosks on the playa, with parcels priced as follows:

BURN2 Conception: all the fun of the fair in Second Life

logoThe BURN2 team have announced the dates and theme for the 2016 BURN2 Conception event – and with them comes an invitation for builders to get involved.

Conception this year will take place on the weekend of Saturday, July 2nd and Sunday July 3rd,  with the theme All The Fun of the Fair.

Announcing the event, the BURN2 Press Release reads in part:

A long time ago, a world was conceived to let people stay in touch and interact with each other all year round, rather than just at one wonderful place once year.  The conception of this place went far beyond the original idea and its framework.

…What better way to celebrate our conception, than to show what we can create for the community at large with all the fun of the fair?  Food stands, games, rides, float parades, fireworks, let’s fill the Playa with fun and frivolity!

Those wishing to participate as builders in the event are encouraged to think along the lines of the event theme and consider building one of the following: a large ride or interactive attraction; a sideshow game of skill or chance; a small food stand; a ticket box; a parade float. The organisers note that other ideas fitting the theme might be accepted, but will need to be discussed with them beforehand.

The roller coaster can burn you up!
The roller coaster is sure to be a “hot item”!

Be warned, however! Plots are limited and will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis, so it’s better to get your application submitted sooner rather than later!  When doing so, do make sure you read the guidelines at the top of the application form; then select your choice of build type and write a description of what you have in mind. The build period is open NOW through until July 1st, so don’t be surprised if you hear back very quickly!

Those who would like to be a greeter at the event can sign-up here, and the organisers note that there may be some performer  / performance slots available, so those interested are asked to keep an eye on the BURN2 website for any details.

The PR also contains another opportunity, this one for models and skin designers:

We are issuing an open call for skin designs as well as models. Come and model your own new skin if you like, as well. Your beautiful skin design may be just the one to make someone feel less self-conscious about being bald.

All skins exhibited in the show will be gathered and distributed at this year’s Skin Burn event, so they must be full permissions. Remember this is a gifting event, full of Colour and Design. Go Crazy!

The Skin Burn Fashion show will take place on Sunday July 3rd, 2016 at 16:00 SLT, those wishing to participate should IM Daark Gothly in-world.

BURN2: Burnal Equinox 2016

via the BURN2 website
via the BURN2 website

Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd, 2016, marks the 2016 BURN2 Burnal Equinox event, which will take place at Burning Man Deep Hole.

The theme for the event is Picnic in the Playa, with the announcement press release reading in part:

After all these years, the rains that sometimes hit the Playa have come to damp the dust down more often. What has long been a dry lake bed is slowly filling once again from meagre trickles of water that are finally able to sustain some life.

A few plants are taking hold here and there but trees are yet to spread their canopies. In celebration of the Equinox we once more head to our Home for our first gathering of the year, a giant communal picnic. A new fresh living Home awaits, for us to start a new fresh year.

Those wishing to participate in the Burnal Equinox as a builder are invited to complete and submit the builder application form, and are asked to read the builder guide prior to submitting their application.

The press release notes that applications for DJs, live musicians and performers who wish to take part in the event will open shortly – check the BURN2 website for updates.

Santalarity: calling builders and performers in Second Life

santa-1Like a fable borne upon a mist of time, a magical, mysterious transformation is wrought upon the ancient dry lake bed we know as the playa. When the mist clears you see an alpine wonderland of mountains, hills and valleys.

Oh, but that is not all! As you draw in for a closer look, you notice something incredible: everything is small in size. You are surrounded by miniature villages and diminutive trains, with Lilliputian creatures and beings populating the scene. But don’t let their small sizes fool you – things are rarely as they appear.

So reads the opening of the Press Release for the BURN2 seasonal event, Santalarity, which this year has the theme of Great Thing come In Small Packages. The event will open its doors on Saturday, December 12th and run through until Sunday, December 13th.

Right now, there is an open invitation to builders and performers to be a part of the festive event, with a very special invitation for tinies, petites and other small avatars to be a part of proceedings and perform or build or DJ.

Those wishing to obtain one of the limited number of FREE builders plots which are available for the event should sign-up now. DJs and performers who wish to join in with the fun of the event can book their preferred spots through the DJ/Performer Sign-up. If you fancy helping out as a greeter, drop a line in-world to Freia Guillaume, and she’ll get your sorted and signed-up.

Further information on Santalarity 2015 will be available through the BURN 2 website, and I’ll hopefully also include updates in these pages, as they are announced.

BURN2: A Carnival of Mirrors in Second Life

BURN2 2015
BURN2 2015

Please note that all SLurls given in this preview will not be generally open until approximately 12:00 noon SLT on Saturday, October 17th, 2015.

BURN2 2015 opens its gates on Saturday, October 17th and will run through until Sunday October 25th.

As with previous years, the festival is spread across six regions, all in the familiar desert look, surrounded by sandy hills that add to the atmosphere and give more of a feel that the event is connected with the real life Burning Man festival.

The theme for this year is “carnival of mirrors”, with the announcement of the theme noting:

This year’s theme is about mirrors and masks, mazes and merger. It will be a kind of magic show that takes the form of an old-fashioned carnival. This Carnival of Mirrors asks three essential questions: within our media saturated world, where products and people, consumption and communion morph into an endlessly diverting spectacle, who is the trickster, who is being tricked, and how might we discover who we really are?

Classic carnivals, as theatres of illusion, upheld a very strict dividing line that separated carnies, cast as showmen, from members of a naïve public who were labelled chumps and suckers, marks and rubes. Our carnival, however, will perform an even more subversive trick — its motto is Include the Rube. The wall dividing the observer from observed will disappear, as by an act of magic; through the alchemy of interaction, everyone at once can be the carny and the fool.

The Festival will  commence with a Lamplighters procession, which will set out at 12:00 noon SLT on Saturday, October 17th, with a further procession taking place at 19:00 SLT.  There will be similar daily processions at 12:00 noon and 19:00 each day of the event through until Friday, October 23rd.

Saturday, October 24th will feature three burnings of The Man, at 06:00 12:00 noon and 18:00 SLT. On Sunday, October 25th, the Temple will likewise burn at 06:00, 12:00 non and 18:00 SLT, but each of these burnings will be preceded at 05:00, 11:00 and 17:00 respectively by Lamplighter processions, which will each include a Fire Dance performance at the Centre Camp. Note that different LMs will be in operation for The Man and the Temple during the burnings, and that you can keep track of all BURN2 activities through the event schedule on Google Calendar.

To ease your explorations of the regions, don’t forget you can pick up a ride at the Department of Mutant Vehicles. This is  also the place where visitors can join a guided tour of the event, which will take place twice daily throughout the week, at 14:00 and 22:00 SLT respectively. The tour will include descriptions of Juried plots, invited artists, theme camps and more. Hot air balloons also offer tours of the regions at any time.

As with previous years, participants have fully entered into the spirit of the BURN2 theme, and the six regions offer a tremendous carnival atmosphere, with Today Nakamura’s Temple build beautifully and brilliantly capturing the essence of the theme and the playa as a whole.
