LL announce Mainland changes & Town Hall to discuss

Linden Lab has announced changes to the standalone Gaeta 1 continent, and the Zindra adult continent. Via the SL Wiki

On Wednesday April 15th, 2026, Linden Lab announced some significant Mainland changes involving the Gaeta 1 continent and the Adult continent of Zindra.

The Changes

Gaeta 1

  • A transitioning of all current residents from Gaeta 1 to other Mainland continents. This is to start in April 2026, with an aim to complete by the end of 2026.
  • This transitioning will be handled carefully, with personalised outreach to residents on Gaeta 1 by members of the Lab’s staff.
  • Land holders on Gaeta 1 will be offered size-for-size parcel replacements, and LL will work with them to find a comparable parcel that suits their needs and preferences.
  • No region on Gaeta will be retired without due consultation with the land holders currently based on it. Time will be given for all land holders to plan, examine options and discuss matters with the Lab as the process commences and progresses over time.
  • The transition is expected to unfold “over many months”.
  • Once complete, Gaeta 1 will go offline as a continent.

Zindra

  • Zindra will see an expansion of approximately 90 regions.
  • This expansion will be rolled-out alongside the transitioning of Gaeta 1 – but does not mean Gaeta 1 land holders “must” accept parcels within Zindra.
    • However, if moving to Zindra is seen as preferable by any Gaeta 1 land holder, they will be given priority access to the new Zindra regions.
  • These new Zindra regions will include scenic waterfront, extended road networks, coastal water passages, and additional development that helps complete and enhance the Zindra continent.

Why is this being done?

To quote from the official blog post:

Adult mainland continues to operate at very high occupancy and shows consistent demand. At the same time, some General and Moderate mainland areas, including Gaeta 1, have seen lower overall use over time. Instead of expanding the total size of mainland, we are adjusting existing capacity to better reflect where Residents are most active today.
This change applies only to the unconnected continent named Gaeta 1. IT IS NOT PART OF A BROADER MAINLAND CLOSURE, and there are no changes to content policy connected to this announcement.

Town Hall Meeting

As a part of the consultation process and to answer initial questions  / hear feedback on these changes, Linden Lab will be holding an in-World Town Hall meeting on Monday, April 20th, 2026, commencing at 11:00 SLT. The Town Hall meeting area can be accessed using the following SLurls:

In addition, the Lab has opened a forum discussion thread on these changes, and invited users to join that conversation.

    1. It’s always easy to read more into things that might (and probably is with this announcement) otherwise be the case, particularly when it comes to SL, where anything LL does is often given the squinty-eyed stare whether deserving of it or not. As such, No real thoughts at this stage.

Gaeta 1 has long been “unfinished”, is small, remote and as such – despite being beloved of those based there – is something of an easy target to roll-up in the face of non-rising Mainland use within the more connected / fully-formed General and Moderate regions / continents where continuity of landscape, etc., is important for a variety of reasons, thus making changes to these much harder.

Similarly, Zindra has been crying out for update / completion pretty much since the day it arrived, and while there has been sporadic attempts to make improvements, a 90-region update gives the opportunity to make it look more like a continent rather than someone’s unfinished side project.

      1. I suspect that you’re right about this, although predictably the suggestion that this represents the beginning of the end for Mainland (outside of Zindra and Bellisseria) is already being mooted.

There is clearly a financial element to this double-side approach, more or less directly articulated in the announcement, but I don’t see any evidence that this is a harbinger of worse to come, despite LL’s evident antipathy for the old Mainland.

        1. Not sure I see any clear financial element being articulated in the announcement; merely an attempt to balance supply and demand without the need to grow SL’s “land” overall and have more of it seem “empty” (God knows, we’ve all heard comments to the effect of “all that land, and no-one is there” enough times).

I do think you’re right on there being a degree of apathy towards Mainland (rather than Bellisseria).Bellisseria is a clean slate; Mainland is at best tricky for LL to fiddle with without upsetting something somewhere – but even so, Mainlanders have been waiting something like four years for the default Mainland EEP to be updated (the fix has been around roughly that long), but there’s always an excuse (which tends to sound as much disinterest as anything: “Yeah, well. It’s tricky. We’ll get around to it – one day”, so to speak) from those overseeing Mainland whenever the subject is brought up.

  1. Here’s an idea to bring up at the meeting since I won’t be there, they could perhaps move the North Sea (Fruit Islands) to be accessible from the Blake Sea.

    Let me elaborate.

Over the last ~10 years traffic and general interest for the North Sea has been declining, to the point where today it’s hard to come across a pilot/mariner there if there isn’t some sort of special event running.
Now, I’m aware the open areas of the North Sea are labeled “for residents only” and that worked fine back when the continent was popular and had a high occupancy rate, sometimes with a wait list, but today most of it, and I do mean most, is vacant, and let us be honest, “for residents only” was never enforced, tourists were always allowed and it made the whole place more interesting for that.
These days with sim crossings being the best they’ve ever been in SL history I think it’d be a good idea to start flexing just how big SL really is and maybe even promote some long range events, and for that, the more connected land the better.
I’m reminded of the time when a popular boat creator released a new model in a shopping event and all of a sudden the Blake Sea sprung to live with people that never even knew that place existed before.
I’m speaking from experience, everyone I’ve ever took on a multi hour trip always enjoyed the experience, they never done anything like it in SL and they had no idea there was even that much connected land do it to begin with. One of the biggest assets of SL is just how big the grid is, so big in fact that’s impossible for anyone to explore all of it, by the time they reached the end of the over 27k regions online right now a lot of them would already been rebuilt into something new, effectively making it endless content.
Most people just end up in the bubble of their landmarks folder only occasionally using the “search places” function to find out the usual top rated (totally not botted) locations. That’s why I’d say, with a high degree of confidence, most active users of SL have this notion that the grid is a fraction of the size it actually is, so it’s no wonder how often you hear people mention they’re fatigued with it, eventually taking longer and longer breaks until the day they never come back because they think they’ve “seen it all” and every time they log in is Groundhog Day and all because they can’t even begin to understand how much is really out there.

    1. I agree – being able to actually demonstrate how contiguous SL is – and might be even further with a little thought – is well worth the effort. Some of my best adventure have been flying / boating as far as is possible with SL. I’ve blogged at least once on my long-distance treks (where I used rez zones along the way to switch from a boat back to a ‘plane, or vice-versa).Understanding the sheer sized of the connected elements of SL is a liberating experience – and one that could well capture the eyes and minds of some of those coming into SL for the first time, if flying/boating/driving is their thing – and they can readily be made aware of the opportunities.
