Quite a (new) year for stories

It’s a new year full of new evenings and afternoons for telling tales and reading stories at the Seanchai Library, and time for me to belatedly return to my round-ups of their weekly gatherings.

As always, all times SLT, and unless otherwise stated, events will be held on the Seanchai Library’s home on Imagination Island.

Monday January 7th, 19:00: Quite a Year for Plums

plumsAnyone who has read the best-selling Mama Makes Up Her Mind or listened to Bailey White’s commentaries on NPR knows that she is a storyteller of inimitable wit and charm. Now, in her stunningly accomplished first novel, she introduces us to the peculiar yet lovable people who inhabit a small town in south Georgia.

Meet serious, studious Roger, the peanut pathologist and unlikely love object of half the town’s women. Meet Roger’s ex-mother-in-law, Louise, who teams up with an ardent typographer in an attempt to attract outer-space invaders with specific combinations of letters and numbers. And meet Della, the bird artist who captivates Roger with the sensible but enigmatic notes she leaves on things she throws away at the Dumpster.

Kayden Oconnell begins this series of selections in voice tonight, to be joined by Caledonia later in the month.

Tuesday January 8th / Wednesday January 9th, 19:00: Inkspell

Faerie Maven-Pralou reads the first part of Cornelia Funke’s young adult which forms the second part of her Inkworld trilogy. The books chronicle the adventures of teenager Meggie Folchart whose life changes dramatically when she realizes that she and her father, a bookbinder named Mo, have the unusual ability to bring characters from books into the real world when reading aloud. Mostly set in Northern Italy and the parallel world of the fictional Inkheart book, the central story arc concerns the magic of books, their characters and creatures, and the art of reading.

In Inkspell, a year has passed since the events related in Inkheart, the first book in the series. Not a day goes by without Meggie thinking of Inkheart, a book that has characters that come to life. Resa is back. The fire-eater, Dustfinger, wants to go back to his wife daughters-who are in the story. When he finds a crazy, self-absorbed psycho storyteller, Orpheus, who can read him back into the book, he goes into the pages. Soon Farid convinces Meggie to read him into the book so he can warn Dustfinger of Basta. But Meggie has figured out how to read herself and Farid into the book Inkheart.

Thursday January 10th, 19:00: Kona Legends

konaIt was in 1866 that Eliza Maguire first heard these stories from old Hawaiians on Huehue Ranch in the Kona district on the island of Hawai’i. Many years later she translated them into English. First published in 1926, they are simple tales shared among the people of Kekaha, the barren, desolate section of North Kona that has often been ravaged by Pele, the Volcano Goddess. Included in this collection is the tale of ‘Akahipu’u, in which mischievous menehune try to steal the top of a hill, and the story of the cave of Makalei, which has provided water to generations of Kona residents. This updated edition of Kona Legends includes a new cover and artwork by Eva Anderson. We hope that this book will lead you to a richer understanding of the Kona area, its history, and its people.

Join Shandon Loring as he delves into these rich and fascinating tales.

Note that throughout January and February donations made to the Seanchai Library SL will go to the real world charity Doctors Without Borders! Have questions? IM or notecard Caledonia Skytower.

Dickens, Santa and pajamas

The last two days before Christmas are upon us, and as The Dickens Project enters its final week, Caledonia Skytower will be presenting a reading of the entire novel in two parts, commencing at 15:00 SLT each day on the 23rd and 24th December, 2012.

The reading, as well as forming a part of The Dickens Project celebrations, is very much a part of SL Christmas tradition for Cale, as she explains:

Everyone has their holiday traditions.  Mine used to be about baking cookies and how much of the contents of my decoration boxes I could get out and up in the house.  Several years ago I was asked by then King Marik Zarco of the Bloodlines SL Clan of Blood Evolution to read A Christmas Carol out loud in their Kingdom.  That became an annual tradition which, in many ways, fed the kernel of an idea that eventually lead to The Dickens Project.

The Dickens Project: continues this week
The Dickens Project: continues this week

Be sure to join Caledonia as she brings us the first 90-minute reading of the novella at The Dickens Project stage at 15:00 Sunday 23rd December, and second, 120-minute reading, same time, same place, on Monday 24th December.

Seanchai Library Readings

The Seanchai Library will be presenting suitably themed stories during the week as well, so why not join them at their home on Imagination Island?

Wednesday 26th December 19:00 – The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus

santaclausJoin Caledonia Skytower at Magicland as she reads from the 1902 classic L. Frank Baum children’s story,  The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. Join her as she recounts how Ak: Master Woodsman of the World discovers the baby Claus in the forest and passes him into the care of the lioness Shiegra, only for Necile, a wood nymph, to take the babe as her own and persuade Ak that she should – thus earning the child the name “Neclaus” (which in our modern times of course, as the author tells us, we mis-spell as “Nicolas”). As he grows, so Neclaus is encouraged to see the world of mortals – of which he is a part – and so his adventures begin and, eventually, the legend of Santa Claus is born!

Thursday 27th December 19:00 – Pajama Party!

Monday December 17th, 19:00: The Cat Who Came for Christmas

cat-xmasJoin Kayden Oconnell for selection from Cleveland Armory’s endearing book.

It is fitting that the founder and head of the Fund for Animals personally rescues and takes in strays, and one incident proved to have a profound effect on him. On a snowy Christmas Eve, Amory helped capture a scrawny cat and took it to his apartment. How does a new cat-keeper train a creature accustomed to fending for itself in Manhattan’s alleys? Slowly, with patience and respect.

Tuesday December 18th, 19:00: A Sprinkling of Christmas Classic

Brought to us piping hot and ready to enjoy by Derry McMahon and Bear Silvershade, who are joined by Aoife Lorefield.

Wednesday December 19th, 19:00: A Christmas Story a Year

Well all know Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843. What many may not know is that he went on to write a further four Christmas tales: The Chimes in 1844, The Cricket on the Hearth in 1845, The Battle of Life in 1846 and The Haunted in 1848. Join Caledonia Skytower as the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth draws to a close, as she presents us with A Christmas Story a Year.

Thursday December 20, 19:00 Dave Cooks the Turkey (and more)

Dave owns the world’s smallest record store, where the motto is “We may not be big but we’re small.” Dave is frequently neurotic and prone to small accidents and mishaps – but he’s not the only one in his family, or his neighbourhood.

Bear Silvershade concludes Dave Cooks the Turkey and he and Derry bring us more from the pen of Stuart McLean for his CBC Radio show, The Vinyl Cafe.

Sunday December 22nd, 13:00: A Raglan Shire Christmas Carol

Caledonia Skytower presents the final part of novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie’s most famous work.

While Peter Pan first appeared in another of Barrie’s works, The Little White Bird, written for adults in 1902, it was in the 1904 stage play, Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up in which he first came to widespread public attention. The play was later expanded upon by Barrie to form the 1911 novel, Peter and Wendy, which later became Peter Pan and Wendy and, eventually, simply Peter Pan.

Both the stage play and the novel tell the story of Peter Pan, a mischievous little boy who can fly, and his adventures on the island of Neverland with Wendy Darling and her brothers, the fairy Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, the Indian princess Tiger Lily, and the pirate Captain Hook.

Caledonia will be reading this installment at Magiclands, commencing at 18:00 SLT.

Monday December 3rd, 19:00: All Seated on the Ground

All-SeatedCaledonia Skytower continues her reading of All Seated on the Ground, Connie Willis’ 2007 science-fiction novella and winner of the 2008 Hugo Award for Best Novella.

The story follows Meg, a newspaper columnist who has joined a commission studying aliens that have landed on the Denver University campus. The aliens glare at everyone, and allow themselves to be led to various locations, but the commission has no idea how to communicate with them. Following an incident at a local mall during the Christmas shopping season, Meg and a school choir director team up to try to decipher the aliens’ actions before they leave Earth.
