A girl discovers that her young husband might actually be a lion in disguise, but not before they have two sons who might actually be cubs; a child made of wax follows his curiosity outside into the heat of daylight and melts, only for his siblings shape him into a bird with feathers made of leaves that enable him to fly into the light; tales of talking hyenas and milk-giving birds; stories of clever cannibals who nonetheless get their comeuppance, and mysterious forces that reside in the landscape. Rhodesian-born Alexander McCall Smith brings together a rich variety of tales from traditional African lore, as re-told by Shandon Loring.

Sunday April 14th, 13:30: The Adventure of the Naval Treaty

The 19th on his list of nineteen favourite Holmes stories, Conan Doyle uses a letter received by Dr. John Watson as the springboard of this adventure.

Sherlock Holmes, as depicted by Sidney Paget in the Strand Magazine for “The Adventure of the Naval Treaty”, 1893

The letter is from an old friend of Watson’s, one Percy Phelps, now working for the Foreign Office. It appears that Phelps has been recovering at the home in Woking he shares with his fiancée and her bother after a most distressing incident at his place of work, which took place over two months previously.

While working on an important naval treaty at his place of work, Phelps had requested a cup of coffee. Unusually, the office commissionaire’s wife had responded to his summons, rather than the commissionaire himself, but she had promised to deliver the coffee as requested. When the beverage failed to arrive, Phelps left his office by one of the two entrances to find out why. To his surprise, he found the commissionaire – who would normally be watching the main entrance to the office – fast asleep, the kettle boiling and the commissionaire’s wife nowhere to be found. At that moment, the bell from his office rang, indicating someone was inside – and much have used the side entrance. Fearing for the treaty’s safety, Phelps rushed back to his office to find the treaty had vanished.

Holmes and Watson set out to investigate, first at Phelps’ place of work, then by visiting him in Woking. All the evidence points towards espionage on the part of the commissionaire’s wife – but Holmes is far from convinced; particularly as the treaty has yet to be divulged by a foreign power in order to embarrass Her Britannic Majesty’s government.

Then someone armed with a knife attempts to break-in to the room in which Phelps is still convalescing at his Woking home …

Once again, Caledonia Skytower brings us another tale from The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.

Monday April 8th, 19:00: Classic Tales from Russia

Join Caledonia Skytower as she brings tales from the ródina to life.

Tuesday April 9th, 19:00: Selections from The Hooting Yard

Frank Key is an English self-published writer,  blogger, broadcaster and voice behind Resonance FM’s long-running radio series Hooting Yard on the Air, a weekly show broadcast live and consisting almost entirely of Key narrating his own short stories and observations.

Frank Key’s prose reduces meaning to dust and then resurrects it in his own skewed image. But no creative genius is less godlike than Frank: his world is mournful, crazy, stupefyingly complex, hilarious and dark, peopled by characters at once engaging and perverse.

– Edmund Baxter

Join Crap Mariner as he presents a selection of Key’s writings.

Wednesday April 10th, 19:00: Spring Into Stories

Spring is sprung, the grass is ris.
I wonders where the birdies is.
They say the birds is on the wing.
Ain’t that absurd?
I always thought the wing was on the bird.

(Ogden Nash or ee cummings)

Gina Pralou-Maven and Faerie Maven-Pralou get together a rich bouquet of Spring Stories to delight your fancy.  The trees are budding, the flowers are blooming, the bees are beginning to buzz and all the world seems bursting with new life and new possibilities!  Presented live in voice.

Thursday April 11th, 19:00: The Darkside: Tales of Guy De Maupassant

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th Century French writer, considered one of the fathers of the modern short story and one of the form’s finest exponents. During his life he authored some 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one volume of verse, prior to his premature death.

Here Shandon Loring brings some of Maupassant’s dark tales to life; stories of the supernatural which explore the furthest reaches of the macabre and at the same time parallel de Maupassant’s own descent into madness and death.

yeatsW.B. Yeats was not only a poet, he was a dedicated teller of Irish folklore.  In this collection, he brings together stories rooted in myth, occult mysteries, and belief in magic, populated by a lively cast of sorcerers, fairies, ghosts, and nature spirits. The title draws on those pre-dawn hours, when these “wee folk” were most abroad, and is also a reference to the time when Druids would perform their own rituals, something Yeats himself was also familiar with, as he was also a ceremonial magician and leader in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, one of the most important esoteric orders in the Western magical tradition.

“This handful of dreams,” as the author referred to the collection, first appeared in 1893, and consists of stories recounted Yeat’s friends, neighbours, and acquaintances, and faithfully transcribed and brought together in a volume which also includes Yeats’ own visionary experiences. Read by Caledonia Skytower.

Sunday 10th March

13:30: Tea-time at Baker Street – The Adventure of the Resident Patient

Doctor Percy Trevelyan was a brilliant student, but being poor, had never been able to establish himself in a private practice. Then one Mr. Blessington approaches him with an unusual proposition: he will set Trevelyan up with his own practice at a prestigious address, and pay all his expenses. In return, he will require three-quarters of all earnings from the practice – which would still leave the good doctor in a relatively comfortable position, prompting him to accept the offer. Entering into the arrangement, Trevelyn discovers Blessington himself is infirm, and the arrangement means he has a doctor always on hand.

Everything goes well to start with; then Blessington reads about a burglary somewhere in the city and becomes deeply agitated. Things get worse when an Russian nobleman attends Trevelyn’s practice, along with his son, apparently to seek help with his condition – only for both to vanish while Trevelyan is distracted, and for Blessington to later report that someone has been in his private chambers, something which leaves him even more upset, even though nothing has apparently ben taken …

Monday 11th March, 19:00 – The Quiet Man

quiet-manReleased in 1952, John Ford’s The Quiet Man is regarded as a classic Irish-American romantic comedy / drama. Starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara (and assorted members of their RL families!) and Barry Fitzgerald, it is a popular choice among critics and film-lovers.

The screenplay for the film was drawn in a large part from a short story of the same name originally published in 1933 in the Saturday Evening Post, and penned by Irish author, Maurice Welsh. Together with a number of other short stories by Walsh, The Quiet Man was gathered into a single volume of his short stories, The Quiet Man and Other Stories, which dealt with many recurring characters living in rural Ireland of the 1920s, and set against the backdrop of the civil unrest which affected the country at that time, while examining the complexities and occasional intrigues of life, love and Irish traditions.

Glass hills, fairies, Korea and a Crooked Man

Once again, the Seanchai Library will be presenting a round of stories and readings in Voice this coming week, with a trio of new tales in the week, and a return once again to 221B Baker Street; all in support of a new real-life charity selection for March and April!

As always, all times SLT, and unless otherwise stated, events will be held on the Seanchai Library’s home on Imagination Island.

Sunday 3rd March, 13:30: Tea-time at Baker Street – The Adventure of the Crooked Man

It is late in the evening when Dr. John Watson receives his good friend, Sherlock Holmes. He has called to tell Watson about his most recent case, and to invite the good doctor to be a witness to the final stage of the investigation.

Colonel James Barclay, late of the The Royal Mallows based at Aldershot Camp, has been most foully done to death, and his wife Nancy stands as the prime suspect.

The other officers of the regiment are mystified by Barclay’s fate, the Colonel and his wife having presented themselves as a most happy couple, although it has sometimes appeared that perhaps the Colonel, who had been given to strange and deep bouts of depression, was perhaps more attached to his wife than perhaps she was to him.

The evidence against Nancy Barclay appears compelling – two witnesses confirming that the last time the Colonel was seen alive, he was with his wife in the morning room of their villa outside Aldershot, the very room in which the Colonel died. Not only that, but Nancy was found, having apparently fainting, alongside the body. Holmes, however, is far from convinced that both evidence and the crime scene are all they first appear to be…

Join Caledonia Skytower and Corwyn Allen as they once again delve into The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes!

Monday 4th March, 19:00 – Cinderellis and the Glass Hill

cinderellisFrom the pen of Gail Carson Levine, who provides spirited updates to familiar folk tales, presents us with a cross-over retelling of both Charles Perrault’s Cinderella and the Norwegian folk tale, The Princess on the Glass Hill.

Laced with Gail Carson Levine’s usual wit and keen eye for detail, this tales sees Cinderella, the subject of her first novel, Ella Enchanted, become a boy, Ellis, who gains the nickname “Cinderellis” given him by his two decidedly unfriendly brothers, Ralph and Burt, due to his penchant for sitting among ashes.

The focus of bullying from his brothers, Cinderellis, sans any help from a kindly Fairy Godmother but gifted with magical talents of his own, decides to win the hand of Princess Marigold.

The only problem facing Cinderellis, outside of the need to climb the glass mountain upon which the princess awaits, is that she thinks he is a monster!

Thus the stage is set for a very fresh spin on two classic tales, brought to life by Caledonia Skytower.

Tuesday 5th March, 19:00: Fairies! Fairies! Fairies with Faerie!

Join Faerie Maven-Pralou as she brings to life tales of fairies and fair folk.
