A Snow Crash, magical necklaces and forgetful clowns

It’s time to kick-off another week of story-telling in voice, brought to our virtual lives by the staff and volunteers at the Seanchai Library, as we move from Christmas to New Year celebrations. As always, all times SLT, and events are held at the Library’s Second Life home at Bradley University, unless otherwise indicated.

Monday January 11th, 19:00: Snow Crash

We all know Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash as one of the inspirations behind Second Life. Now Gyro Muggins opens the pages of this modern classic.

Snow CrashIn the 21st Century, Los Angeles is no longer a part of the United States, but is instead run by a variety of corporate and other factions, which much of the city divided into sovereign enclaves. Mercenary forces via with private security firms; drugs and the private vehicle reign supreme and where hyper-inflation is rampant.

Within this strange and complex world exists the Metaverse, an omnipresent 3D “Internet of everything” in which people can roam as avatars. It is in this world that the aptly named Hiro Protagonist (and former pizza delivery driver) operates as a sword-welding heroic warrior and bounces between the virtual and physical worlds as the self-styled “last of the freelance hackers.”

However, when his friend and fellow-hacker Da5id, falls victim to the mysterious new drug Snow Crash, which exists in the virtual world as a computer virus capable of infecting machines connected to the Metaverse and in the physical world as a viral infection which attacks the central nervous system, Hiro sets out to learn the truth of what is going on.  Working with his virtual business partner, the 15-year-old Y.T., Hiro  digs into the truth behind Snow Crash, leading him (and Y.T.) to the doors of  fibre-optics monopolist L. Bob Rife and his acolytes and minions, including the highly dangerous Raven.

Tuesday January 12th 19:00: Pearl

PearlFaerie Maven-Pralou opens the covers of the first book in Lisa Pinkham’s the Doll Collection series.

Everything changes for Addy on her 12th birthday, when she receives a mysterious gift of a collection of dolls and an opal necklace imbued with magical powers.

Soon, Addy finds herself transported to a beach where she meets a mermaid, Pearl, and where she can swim with and talk to underwater fairies and enjoy the company of min-reading dolphins.

But all is not as safe as it seems; when Pearl vanishes and Addy’s magic necklace is stolen, Addy is left with no way home and without a friend – and she must confront the thief on her own, trusting that the magic which resides in her is enough to put things to rights.

Wednesday, January 13th 19:00: LonnyDonny

Caledonia Skytower continues a journey through some of the writings of MJ McGalliard, bringing us LonnyDonny, Stories Told in the Dark Book 1.

What happens when identical twin Rodeo Clowns are afflicted with amnesia? All their lives they’ve been more or less one person. But, what if they can’t remember which is which? There’s also Frito Chili Pie.

Stories and news from Seanchai Library

It’s time to kick-off  a new year of story-telling in voice, brought to our virtual lives by the staff and volunteers at the Seanchai Library, as we move from Christmas to New Year celebrations. As always, all times SLT, and events are held at the Library’s Second Life home at Bradley University, unless otherwise indicated.

Monday January 4th, 19:00: Nobody Bothers Gus

Gyro Muggins presents a 1955 short story by Algis Budrys, who also wrote under the pen names of Frank Mason, Alger Rome, John A. Sentry, William Scarff, and Paul Janvier.

An alienated “superman” with an innate ability to dampen curiosity (and be forgotten) is essentially invisible and therefore unable to participate in society.  With no “culture of his own,” he retires to anonymity in the country.

Tuesday January 5th 19:00: Epiphany

Trolley Trollop concludes reading Connie Willis’ Miracle and Other Christmas Stories.

Wednesday, January 6th 19:00: Waiting for Fido

Caledonia Skytower continues a journey through some of the writings of Mj McGalliard, bringing us Waiting for Fido, Stories Told in the Dark Book 1.

The stories to be related in the dark in this case are those nagging tales that won’t go away until you bring them to the light. Waiting for Fido is the story of a couple ready to retire and sail away, almost. There is still the nagging problem of what to do with the family pets…

News From Seanchai

2016 will see Seanchai Library continue their Explore series, so brilliantly inaugurated in 2015 with Explore the Great Gatsby
2016 will see Seanchai Library continue their Explore series, so brilliantly inaugurated in 2015 with Explore the Great Gatsby

There are exciting times ahead for Seanchai Library in 2016:

  • Some of the Library’s activities will be relocated to LEA 9, which has been granted to Seanchai for the winter and spring months. In particular, the ever popular Tea-time at Baker Street series featuring the stories of Sherlock Holmes will be relocating to a purpose-built set at LEA 9, together with one of the weekly book nights, in order to offer guests a 360-degree visual support for the stories being told
  • Seanchai will continue there Explore series in partnership with Tacoma Little Theatre (TLT). Building on the success of Explore the Great Gatsby, and with funding now confirmed, Seanchai will this year focus on the works of Anton Chekhov, in support of TLT’s  production of Christopher Durang’s Vania and Sonia and Masha and Spike. The new Explore will be established as a part of Seanchai’s presence in Kitely, and will feature at least one crossover performance between the physical and virtual worlds
  • Additionally, Seanchai Library is working with myself to develop an ongoing partnership which will encompass stories and poems written by Seanchai staff and volunteers focused of the art displayed at Holly Kai, and which will be presented in voice at Holly Kai Park as a part of work to bring the art of story telling the park through Stories at the Park.

I’ll be reporting on all of these projects by Seanchai Library as the year progresses.

He is accompanied by an atheist and a retired English teacher; an unlikely trio of wise men who walk snow-covered streets, following their own signs and wonders, and gaining insights into their faith (or lack of it) along the way in a moving tale which discusses faith without ever proselytising.

Wednesday, December 30th 19:00: The Following Shoes Are a Gift from the Pope

In a special 75-minutes session, Caledonia Skytower reads from M.J. McGalliard’s collection of short stories rife with absurd (though not “blasphemous”) humour related to saints, and some of the more circuitous doings of the Catholic Church.

‘Twas the week before Xmas at Seanchai Library in Second Life

Christmas is almost upon us, and so it’s a short week at Seanchai Library in the run-up to the holidays – but there is still time for some fabulous story-telling in voice, brought to our virtual lives by the staff and volunteers at the Seanchai Library. As always, all times SLT, and events are held at the Library’s Second Life home at Bradley University, unless otherwise indicated.

Monday December 21st, 19:00: Escape Clause

Rod SterlingYou’re about to meet a hypochondriac. Witness Mr. Walter Bedeker age forty-four. Afraid of the following: death, disease, other people, germs, draft, and everything else. He has one interest in life and that’s Walter Bedeker. One preoccupation, the life and well-being of Walter Bedeker. One abiding concern about society, that if Walter Bedeker should die how will it survive without him?

So opens the 6th show in the very first series of Rod Sterling’s The Twilight Zone, one of the original three episode ideas used by Sterling to pitch the series concept in 1959.

Already labelled a hypochondriac in that opening narration, we follow the mean-spirited Walter Bedeker as he seeks to make a water-proof contract with the devil himself (appearing in human form under the disarming name of “Ted Cadwallader”) which will allow him to sell his soul in return for health and immortality. With every “t” crossed and “i” dotted, the contract seems perfect for Bedeker, wary of any conniving tricks on the part of Old Nick.

So why is the Devil so accommodating to Bedker’s demands, and why does he, in what appears to be a turn of altruism, offer Bedeker an escape clause, allowing him to choose the time of his death if he tires of being immortal?

Join Gyro Muggins as he once again takes into a journey into The Twilight Zone.

Tuesday December 22nd 19:00: A Child’s Christmas in Wales and Other Stories

Aoife Lorefield reads Dylan Thomas’ timeless classic poem, and other tales of Christmas.

Wednesday, December 23rd 19:00 The Night Before the Night Before Christmas

A Seanchai Holiday Tradition  of stories and poems (some original works) with the Seanchai Staff.

Personal Note

I’d like to wish the staff and volunteers at Seanchai Library every best wish for the season and for a successful 2016. Thank you for your continued work in bringing stories and the spoken word into Second Life in the tradition of the seanchai, and raising awareness of literature as an art in-world. Looking forward to working with you throughout 2016, and to establishing Storytime at the Park with you as well!

A Christmas Carol in Second Life

Saturday, December 12th sees the The Dickens Project re-open its gates for a week-long celebration of Charles Dickens and his work. Centred on A Christmas Carol, which will be read throughout the week by staff and guests of Seanchai Library, the Project features so much more as well.

Originally conceived under the Storyfests SL banner (Storyfests being the special events “spin-off” from Seanchai Library), The Dickens Project was first presented in 2012, as a part of activities being held around the world to mark the 200th anniversary of Charles’ Dickens birth. Over the course of two weeks, thousands of visitors passed through the project’s gates, explored the life and times of Charles Dickens and attended presentations of A Christmas Carol and other works by the author.

In December 2013, The Dickens Project allowed Seanchai Library to further bridge the digital divide when a special reading of A Christmas Carol was held, with Caledonia Skytower, in her alter ego of writer Judith Cullen, narrated the story to an audience attending the Knights of Pythias Temple in Tacoma, Washington States, and to an audience in Second Life. At the same time, Kayden Oconnell and Shandon Loring appeared in-world and also at the Teemple, courtesy of a big screen. After the presentation, the audiences in Second Life and at the Temple were able to interact with one another, with the latter able to learn more about Second Life.

Now firmly established as a part of Seanchai Library’s seasonal calendar, the 2015 edition of The Dickens Project will take place in the Community Virtual Library’s exhibit space. All activities throughout the festival are free to attend, and any donations received will be awarded to the  Community Virtual Library: a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, connecting residents with information resources, reference services, and serving as a networking tool for information resource professionals.
