A Feather Mantle in The Outer Garden, Second Life

It has been just over two years since my last visit to Bisou Dexler’s The Outer Garden, a place of beauty and enigma, art and creative spark, and peace and contemplation. It’s a location which generally combines two settings, once which may change on a very subtle level from time to time / with the seasons, and the other often presenting something completely new.

The first of these settings is home to the main Landing Point. It is a sky platform occupied by the decaying hulk of a once grand manor house; one now with roofing gone and walls broken and cracked, and signs in places of attempts to rebuild. A long hallway stretches before arrivals, pointing the way to a distant stair climbing to a round window.

Rooms sit to either side of this hallway, one to the right  two on the left. The first, and closest to the landing point, appears to have one been a grand chamber. Now flooded by the waters pouring in from the walls, it is a beautiful garden space, with a snowy floor (as with much of the rest of the building) and pools through which the water tumbles and poppies, lobster claw, cattails and herbs grow, and over which gnarled trees hang their boughs.

A hole in the wall here offers access to the remnants of another grand room, of which little is now left but for columned wall sections and a tumbled tower, its sides open to the snow-covered gardens wherein multiple attractions might be reached and numerous more opportunities for photography found. Or’ if preferred, tea might be taken within might have once been a further hall linking two wings of the now broken and tumbling house.

Of the other rooms, one offers itself as a living space come boudoir; a place of music, art, and retreat, the jumbled furniture, floating balloons, musty books on their shelves and the detritus of a fallen ceiling and roof  giving it a sense of romantic charm. Beyond it sits what appears to have once been a private garden space or courtyard, separating the lounge / boudoir from the empty shell of the second room which can only be accessed from the grounds outside.

The long hall itself is (as ever) beautifully dressed and well frosted with winter, again offering multiple opportunities for photography. However, closest to the landing point is an introduction to the second setting within The Outer Garden, together with the first of two teleports leading to it. Simply sit at the mirror and select the option To Find Solace. On arrival, walk through the tunnel with its 3D representation of a garden from a Ukiyoe painting to where a trapeze artist’s ring hangs and you can teleport on to the main art installation (it doesn’t matter which of the listing destination options you choose.

Your destination will be a gorgeous 3D representation of a traditional Japanese painting, one which draws on Hagoromo, one of the most-performed Japanese Noh (dramatic dance) plays. Subject to multiple adaptations over the centuries (including W.B. Yeats, who drew upon its story for his one act play, At the Hawk’s Well), it tells of s fisherman who, whilst out walking on a springtime night, happens upon the feather cloak of a tennin (an aerial spirit or celestial dancer) hanging on a tree bough.

Taking the hagoromo, the fisherman plans on keeping it as an heirloom; however, the tennin sees him with it and begs for him to return it to her, for without it she cannot return to the heavenly realms. taking it, and demands its return – for she cannot return to Heaven without it. At first, the fisherman refuses, but touched by the tennin’s sorrow, he relents: he will return the hagoromo to her – if she will show him her celestial dance.

After hesitating in turn, the tennin agrees to his terms and she performs a symbolic dance honouring the Moon and its phases (represented by the number three, five and fifteen), before the fisherman returns her cloak to her, and she vanishes, “like a mountain slowly hidden in the mist”.

Within Bijou’s Hagoromo, elements of this story are present; there are fish to represent the fisherman, there’s the shoreline where he walked with his friends; little island sit on the water whilst the Moon can be seen in a number of symbolic forms. However, what is offered should not be taken as any literal interpretation of the play; rather, it is, as noted a 3D celebration of traditional Japanese art into which we can step and experience from within.

Multiple places to sit are available for this, including what I’m going to calla “celestial cart” which can carry visitors around and through the painting.  To explore on foot, simply pass under the line of Torii gates and drop down to the level below, and then from there make your way around (and down) to where another mirror teleport will return you either to the Torri gates or back to the intermediary teleport point, with the mirror there taking you back to the main landing point.

Throughout all of this there is a sense of serenity to be found; wandering the halls of the house or along the covered walkways of the painting, there are no distractions of unnecessary sounds or music (which is not to say The Outer Garden is entirely without sound; rather sounds are restricted to where they need to be), allowing the mind to settle and appreciate without undue agitation.

A touch of Decopunk and a Neverever Land in Second Life

Hera (zee9) opened a couple of new settings for people to enjoy in the run-up (and hopefully over) the holiday break (Hera’s builds do tend to vanish rapidly, so an early visit is always recommended!). Entitled respectively Decopunk Metropolis  and Neverever Land, they offer very different settings one to the other, with a hint of each of their natures given in their names. Both can be reached from the primary Landing Point, and given the introductory notecard to Decopunk Metropolis is offered at the Landing Point, I’m going to start with that setting.

Decopunk is one of the many offshoots of the original cyberpunk genre which have sprouted down the years. As the name might suggest it is centred around the art deco and Streamline Moderne art styles, folding into itself the likes of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) and 1991’s The Rocketeer. Technically a subset of dieselpunk (interwar period through to the 1950s), Decopunk remains firmly anchored in the period running through the 1920 to early 1930s.

All of this is presented in Decopunk Metropolis, which neatly echoes Hera’s Blade Runner / Drune style of design, in that we are placed within a city-style environment. However, it is one very different in styling and presentation; not Blade runner hints here; instead the references touch on Lang’s film whilst folding into itself physical-world Deco touches (perhaps most obviously New York City’s Chrysler Building).

Within it, and in difference to builds like Brutal City (which I wrote about here), there is no clearly defined “ground level”; the buildings rise from the mist, lit windows staring out like so many eyes, their upper reaches pillared and ornate, lit by streams of yellow falling along their flanks and spotlights thrown bright pools of light into the heavens, all watched over  by giant rooftop statues staring into the night.

Which is not to say the setting is without roads; they are most definitely present – they’re just as suspended as the buildings, ornate arches rising over them as if holding them aloft as they wind between (and through) the towers. Occupying two levels, they are linked via great vehicular elevators, with the lower level of roads offering three routes of exploration from the setting’s airport, the arrival zone for those coming from the main Landing Point.

Two of these roadway routes form a loop of which almost reaches completely around the setting. It is just cut short from doing so on the south-east corner of the city, where the road ends at one of the vehicular elevators mentioned above. The western around of the road, however, makes its way all the way around the city to a point directly opposite the airport. This is home to the Cortez Hotel, a place crowned by an ornate tower and also to be reached by taking the arrow-straight road also departing the airport to cut across the setting, north-to-south.

In making the crossing, the road bridge passes through the tallest building in the setting, which has a spire rising from it that looks almost as if it is expecting an airship to nuzzle up against it. This tower is also home to the Moka Efti lounge, with its very Chicago meets Cabaret vibe, and the local casino. These offer their own attractions and  – should you find them (it’s not hard) each offers a light-draped footbridge spanning the gulf between it and the east and west towers. Paralleling the road bridges, these each have a elevator station at their far ends waiting to take you to their particular points of interest, be it the apartment house high up on the eastern tower (and reach by way of taking the elevator up from the walkway to the road bridge, and then again up from their to the apartment), or to either / both of the Starlight Jazz Club and the Shanghai Dragon (again passing by way of the elevated road level).

Another way of getting around is via the local The Fifth Element style taxis; only rather than flying your from point-to-point a-la Corbin Dallas, these will whisk you around via teleporting. Just touch the taxi sign on a waiting cab and then pick a destination from the list. Those finding their way to the garage at the airport might also avail themselves of the motorbike that can be rezzed there, whilst also, and for the keen-eyed, there are various metal catwalks and stairways which may additionally lead to little places of interest, if followed and climbed.

Neverever Land, by contrast, offers a somewhat tropical setting, located at the region’s ground level. It is reached by way of the main landing point, and then an intermediary point, where more about the setting can be learned.

As might be guessed from the name, Neverever Land draws inspiration from Peter Pan – more J.M. Barrie than Disney – and the various additional works to which it has given rise. Comprising a series of interlinked islands set against a tropical back-drop, each of which contains setting based on both J.M. Barrie’s work whilst perhaps casting a wider net, the easiest way to describe this setting is that of a Neverland where the inhabitants are grown-up, but who have never quite lost touch with their spark of childhood sense of adventure and imagination.

This is actually setting which Hera last revealed in 2021, and which I wrote about in Hera’s Neverever Land in Second Life. however, as with all of Hera’s builds this in not just a rolling-out of something she’s had in-world before; there are differences. Perhaps the most noticeable of these – and one which extends to Decopunk Metropolis, is the use of AI NPCs.

These come in multiple forms throughout both settings – human, automaton, animal, bird – even, should you find it, a sandwich which has having an existential crisis concerning its purpose (being eaten) and its desire to continue (clue: look towards the left-hand end of the bar in Moka Efti). Hera started experimenting with AI scripted agents with the help and support of Kacey Stratton (in fact, one of the scripted agents from Brutal City pops-up in Decopunk Metropolis, but with a different persona.

I enjoyed my interactions with several of the character in the Brutal City build, but confess I didn’t gain the same level of enjoyment with the majority of the characters here; whereas the AIs at Brutal City were largely conversational in nature, I found the AIs at both Decopunk and Neverever Land too expositional in their multi-paragraph replies. In mentioning this to Hera, she indicated there had been an oversight in keeping the AI responses more constrained. Whilst unfortunate in the way it – for me – killed interaction, it most certainly does not spoil a visit.

Rounded out with a nicely curated audio mix on the audio stream that fits the Decopunk Metropolis setting perfectly, I thoroughly recommend the city as a place to visit, and Neverever Land as a nice addition.

Cherishville’s winter 2024 in Second Life

Lam Erin has redressed his homestead region of Cherishville for the holiday / winter period, bring to it hints of both the Winter 2023 and the Autumn 2024 iterations in small touches, whilst offering something new to visit and appreciate.

Those small touches are perhaps easy to miss – the winding road through the countryside and and arrival of a steam train; but they help remind those who regularly visit Cherishville that there are nice little visual touches to be found, reflecting Lam’s eye as a photographer-artist.

Cherishville is a peaceful, photogenic destination set in the heart of winter. With snowfall and stunning scenery, it offers a tranquil escape. Using PBR textures, this region is perfect for capturing the beauty of the season.

Caught in a night setting with surrounding hills and distant mountains semi-shrouded by falling snow, the region might be seen as  being divided into two halves. to the north, and running west-to-east from the Landing Point is a little hamlet, bookended by a carousel close by the Landing Point and a Ferris wheel at the far end, the two linked by a main street.  It is by the carousel that the steam train might be seen, together with a very familiar touch from Lam which also gives a sense of continuity through many of his region designs: a railways station.

The handful  of houses forming the hamlet are all furnished, presenting indoor elements to explore (and escape the snow!), whilst the road turns south as it reaches the Farris wheel to cross the local (and frozen) river. Here lies the second half of the region takes over, a rural setting a little mindful of the autumn 2024 design, the road winding through the countryside, looping back towards the little hamlet as it does so.

As the road does so, it passes a pleasantly-located farm; to one side, and overlooking the stream, a barns has been converted into a warm house; on the other two form a brightly-lit Christmas Tree farm.

Tucked into this is a wealth of detail – places to sit, details to photograph – from polar bears playing on the ice, through reindeer wandering the countryside to teddy bears exchanging gifts. Those requiring props for photography will find rezzing in the region is open – but as Auto Return is off, do please remember to pick-up afterwards!

Astoria’s wintertime in Second Life

Astoria is a Homestead region held by Eromara Vita and Dots (Dotties Stoop). For December 2024, and unsurprisingly, the region is dressed for the winter season and decorated with touches in keeping with the time of year. The easiest way to summarise the region is via its Destination Guide description:

Astoria is a Dutch winter destination perfect for snow lovers. Glide along ice skating paths, explore hidden caves, or take a scenic walk with loved ones. Enjoy dancing on the spacious dance floor or relax in cosy cuddle spots. Ride the ski lift to the mountaintop ski bar and descend on skis, snowboard, or sled for an exhilarating experience.

In terms of design, the region is split into five islands (although the channel between two is so small, it’s easy to think of them as a single finger of land running long the north edge of the region). The waters between and around the island are frozen, thus forming the skating paths, the ice reaching out to touch the off-region surround of snowy mountains.

It is on the eastern end of one of those islands that the Landing Point resides, complete with a couple of jolly (if slightly argumentative!) carollers waiting to greet incoming visitors. Reindeer are fenced in here, possibly awaiting Santa’s arrival as the snow falls, and their time hitched to his sleigh. Going on the red-and-white logoed tractor-trailer inching its way over the ice, complete with red-suited guide, they may not have to long to wait before he arrives!

A hump-backed bridge spans the ice here to reach the largest of the islands. This forms the setting’s highest (indeed, only) summit: a tall hill with a steep but climbable gradient crowned by a coffee bar with outdoor seating and, at the time of my visit, vehicle which looked at if Batman might be out trying to remember where he left it – although as rezzing is open and Auto Return is off, I’m not sure if it was made to be part of the setting or left by a visitor who used it as a prop (but it is unlocked).

If you don’t fancy the climb up the hill, a walk around the coast to the south-western extent will bring you to the chair lift for an easy ride up to the coffee bar. Sleds and snowboards can be obtained from rezzers at the top of the chair lift for an easy ride down.

It is to the south-east of the main island that visitors will find the dance floor mentioned in the description above, sitting on its own snowy island across the ice. And speaking of ice, those wishing to skate appear of have three choices: pop on their own blades and set out on the ice freestyle, or keep and eye out for the skating balls along the edge of the Landing Point island. The latter take two forms: couples and singles. As I was on my own during my visit, I cannot speak to the doubles skating balls, but the single follows a scripted path around the island in a manner that reveals everything whilst leaving you with hands free for dramatic photos, if you so chose!

If you opt to remain on the northern islands for exploration, you can follow them as they point west, a little covered bridge neatly linking them. After this an avenue of tree with boughs bent as if to try to protect you from the falling snow will lead you onto the a further bridge and the larger of the two islands on the eastern extent of the region. From here is it just a short hop to the tall island with its hill – or if you prefer, you can remain where you are and escape up into a cosy tree house.

The final – and smallest – of the islands is something of a wildlife reserve; a magical place where not only do penguins and polar bears meet – but they seem just fine in roaming and skating around together 🙂 .

Through all of this are many places to sit and relax, together with opportunities for photos and fun – not all the sit points are to be found on chairs or benches! And make sure you check out the entrances to the caves – they sit on opposite sides of the large island and should be hard to miss –  a visit is not complete without a trip through one of them!

Elphyne: Winter’s Breath in Second Life

In looking at places in Second Life to visit, I was surprised to note that it’s been just over four years since my first (and until this point, only) visit to Kat Luna’s (KatieLuna – or KitKat as she was then known) setting of Seaclaid. Back then, it was a place offering a welcome to all creatures of fantasy: fae folk, dragons, lycans, vampires, etc., as well as ordinary mortals (see: Seaclaid’s fantasy setting in Second Life). However, I lost track of it shortly thereafter. Whether this was because the setting simply vanished from Second Life (as is oft the way of things),  or simply because of my own tardiness (in which case, an apology to Katie), I know not.

Fortunately, I recently discovered that Katie is now offered a setting dressed for the winter season in the form of Elphyne: Winter’s Breath. Located within a Full region she has called Seaclaid, and which makes use of the additional Land Capacity bonus available to such privately-held regions, it is a wonderfully seasonal setting mixing touches of whimsy, fun and art into its overall design and offer activities for visitors to enjoy.

The whimsy is on display the moment visitors arrive, the Landing Point being located right next to the finish line for a most unusual race; one which also appears to have just arrived within the region, the participants emerging from a nearby tunnel in a sudden burst of pushing (and in one case, slithering, assuming the the mice and their form of transport are also part of the race) dash to cross the line, as adult mice push their little ones in sleighs, cheered on by appreciative spectators.

This end of the race stands at the junction of cobbled roads which offer a means of exploring the region, be it on foot or on horseback – a rezzer nearby will assist you with the latter. In fact the junction hides the fact that all the roads are essentially all branches of the same route, diving here, coming back together there, and so on; a route that both circumnavigates most of the setting and also offers a branch cutting through it, those providing a practical route of exploration.

Follow it as it points to the west and you’ll quickly pass by the upper end of a chairlift rising from the lower lands to the north, they pass between the well-spread trees of a wood and a cosy arbour-style cabin watched over by a little group of patchwork critters. After this, the road tuns north and reaches a bridge where Santa may have had a mishap: a red bag of presents and goodies lies in the road.

Perhaps Rudolf misjudged the climb out from the little town below and failed to gain sufficient altitude to clear the bridge railings, and the resultant bump knocked the sack free of the sleigh; or maybe the sack wasn’t properly secured to start with, and fell to the ground without Santa noticing. Either way, the misfortune that brought it to ground, quite literally, has turned into good fortune for a trio of seasonally-hatted squirrels as they abscond with some of the sack’s contents…

Beyond the bridge, the road sweeps around a shoulder of the hills to descend to the lower aspects over the setting, doubling back on itself and then turning eastwards once more. Here, it passes between a town square set out for a seasonal carnival and the local train station, the bridge just crossed carrying the road over the tracks that run alongside the station’s little platform.

A little further on, the rod hits another junction,  splitting itself. Turn right, and you’ll be able to follow it and it winds back up to the Landing Point, passing by way of another junction as it does so. Turn left, and the road will take you north once more before making yet another sweeping turn southwards, climbing once more as it does so and passing a grand (private) house and passing back over the railway line via another bridge and then making its way back to the Landing Point as well.

Within all this there is much to see: the little touches of whimsical fun with the setting’s furry denizens, the opportunity to ride the Ferris wheel at the carnival or take the chair lift up from the town and then grab a sled from the rezzer at the upper station and ride it back down the slope (and you can obviously opt to take the slope more sedately, rights the chairlift down).

Then there is the frozen lake for skating, complete with a warm lodge alongside it for relaxing before the warming fire, hot spring to bathe in, dancing to be had within the town square pavilion  and the local pub where something might be had to warm the insides! Meanwhile, the art I mention can be found both within a small gallery just across the bridge from where the squirrels are making off with their loot, and also among the trees of the setting for those who go a-wandering off the roads.

With Santa crooning in the town, deer, rabbits and bear o be found in the woods and places to sit and pass the time both indoors and out, Elphyne: Winter’s Breath makes for an engaging winter-time visit.

WQNC: the returning in Second Life

The last time I wrote about Maasya’s Wo Qui Non Coin (or WQNC for short) was nigh-on a year ago, when Maasya presented a Japanese shrine caught in the midst of winter (see: Visiting a Japanese shrine for Christmas in Second Life). As WQNC has had a habit of vanishing from Second Life from time-to-time (indeed, the time I wrote about it prior to December 2023 was in January of that year – and it vanished practically right after I’d published my little write-up!), I lost track as to what might have happened with it.

However, WQNC is currently back in Second Life, and appears to have been so since around the start of November. At the time of my December visit, it once more offers a Japanese winter and temple scene as it did back in December ’23 – but this time on a much grander scale, Maasya once more having upsized to a Full region – and one leveraging the Land Capacity bonus. As such, this iteration of WQNC is able to offer a lot to take in, from the streets and alleys of a small town through to summit-topping temples and winding paths of cut stone, to a hidden place in which to hide from the world.

And cats. Lots of cats (which suits me just fine, as I’m currently the human for 2.5 cats (the half being a semi-feral stray I’ve been trying to gently win over for the last 5-6 months, but we’re still at the point where he will come in for food – as long as he doesn’t have to travel further into the house than the dining room – and will only suffer my presence within 3-4 feet of him when I have a food bowl in my hand!

However, as it took 18 months to fully gain the trust of an abandoned cat living in the rough the last time I did this, I’m confident we’ll get there this time around as well – eventually!

But back to WQNC. Surrounded by an off-region mountain range, the setting might be considered as has having two distinct but fully intertwined elements to its design. To the east, there is the low-lying townscape, with also extends westwards along the southern  edge of the region; to the north there are the highlands forming a wall of rock against which the town in part huddles, and which extends a broad, stepped plateau southwards along the western side of the region, offering a further shoulder of rock to protect the town.

The Landing Point sit below this mountain, on the south side of the region where the local rail line reaches the town’s little single-platform station.  Slightly elevated, the station appears to be the line’s terminus, the two-car commuter train perhaps about to set off eastwards once more and dive into the tunnel burrowing through a rocky shoulder sitting in the south-eastern corner of the region. Whilst nowhere near as high as the northern-western summit, these rocks do extend a flat finger north, on which has been built two small apartment blocks.

The latter seem to hint at one of the region’s little secrets: that seem to be the residences of local tenants. Whether they are for rent or have simply been decorated by friends of Maasya, I’ve no idea; but the multiplicity of owners for the furnishing within the caused me not to pry further so as not to invade privacy. The same appeared to be the case with some of the small houses within the town itself (notably those directly below and across the street from the apartment buildings), so again, some care might be required when wandering through the town.

Not that wandering shouldn’t be done; there is a richness of detail within the little streets and alleys deserving of discovery, indoors and out – including one or two little SL stores selling their wares tucked away here and there among the bars and eateries and other establishments. So do take your time exploring.

It is also through the town that on can reach some of the ways up into the snowy northern uplands. One of these makes its way up to the Neko shrine devoted to cats, and where some of the local felines might be found enjoying the warmth of an oil heater. Another makes it way up and long the foot of the flat-topped summit before climbing over the northern hills and plunging down to where the aforementioned hideaway can be found.

To reach the summit, however, one must take the steps opposite the entrance to the train station. These wind their way upwards, guarded by lanterns, stone cats and saplings, first reaching an outthrust shoulder of a plateau. With a stream flowing swiftly by to one side and what looks like a natural hot spring on the other, this area is home to the Mishima Jinja – although the spirits it hosts are not exactly of the deity kind!

The path upwards continues on the far side of a bridge spanning the stream, arriving at another terrace from which the final ascent to the top of the mountain might be made via the imposing straight stairway that rises as if to the heavens. At the top and at last, visitors come to the temple and shrines. The last time I saw the temple, back in December 2023, it was home to a dragon. Now surrounded by the waters of a large man-made pool, it houses an impressive carving of three snakes.

From this lofty vantage point, one is afforded views  down over the town below. There is also a further stairway down to another plateau. This is home to the waters of a large circular pool, which one might meditate before on a padded bench (and perhaps give the legs a bit of a rest before challenging them with the walk all the way back down to the lowlands once more!).

One of the things I really like about this iteration of WQNC is the use of muted colour. From sky through rocks to buildings, muted tones are used within the expanse of grey sky and rock and off-white clouds and snow. Reds and greens and blues are, for the most part, pushed towards the darker, more faded / aged end of the spectrum.
