It’s time to kick-off a week of story-telling in voice, brought to our virtual lives by the staff and volunteers at the Seanchai Library. As always, all times SLT, and events are held at the Library’s Second Life home at Bradley University, unless otherwise indicated.

Sunday, October 30th 13:00 The Great Boo!

It’s that time of year when ghosts and ghouls arise, when demons and vampires and more walk abroad; it’s a time for spooky stories and terrifying tales to be told by moonlight or in darkened rooms. And if you’re someone who enjoys spine-tingling yarns, Seanchai Library has just the thing for you at Holly Kai Park – The Great Boo! – an afternoon of Halloween stories live in voice to mark the opening of Holly Kai Park’s Storyteller’s Circle.

19:00: The War Hound and the World’s Pain (Von Bek #1)

Gyro Muggins opens the covers of Michael Moorcock’s 1982 supernatural novel.

Europe, the 17th century: nations are ravaged by the Thirty Years’ War, driven by religion and engulfing most of the Great Powers. Weary of the fighting, disillusioned, faithless and cynical, Ulrich von Bek, the War Hound, deserts his troops and travels through a Germany ruined by the war and religious persecution.

Coming to a strange forest, he finds within it a castle which appears to have escaped the war. He decides to seek shelter within its walls – only to find this is no ordinary castle. The lord within it is none other than Satan himself.

Von Bek discovers he has been allowed into the castle so that Satan might seek his help. In return for his soul, the Devil asks him to seek out the Cure for the World’s Pain, so that Satan might use it as proof to God that he wishes to be reconciled with heaven.

The hosts of Hell, however, aren’t that keen on the idea of reconciliation…

Unnatural Creatures is a collection of short stories about the fantastical things that exist only in our minds—collected and introduced by beloved New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman.

The sixteen stories gathered by Gaiman, winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards, range from the whimsical to the terrifying. The magical creatures range from werewolves to sunbirds to beings never before classified. E. Nesbit, Diana Wynne Jones, Gahan Wilson, and other literary luminaries contribute to the anthology.

Join Shandon Loring as he brings some of these stories to life.

Join Caledonia Skytower as she reads selections from Neil Gaiman’s 2009 Newbery Medal winning children’s fantasy novel, simultaneously published in Britain and America during 2008, which also collected the annual Hugo Award for Best Novel from the World Science Fiction Convention and the Locus Award for Best Young Adult Book selected by Locus magazine subscribers.

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn’t live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod’s family . . .

Tuesday October 25th, 19:00: Fantastic Tales: Visionary and Everyday

With this posthumously published anthology and  successor to his best-selling Italian Folktales, Italo Calvino, a contemporary surveyor of the otherworldly, pays homage to twenty-six of his nineteenth-century precursors.

Join Trolley Trollop on a journey through this volume, which is both an education in the history of fantastic literature and a roller-coaster ride of wonder and terror, vampires, ghosts, and the rebellious creatures of our own psyches.

13:00: Spooky Stories at Scare Me Silly

As guests of Kultivate Magazine, Seanchai Library and friends presents an hour of thrilling tales in the festival haunted House: Hana Hoo presents an original tale, Things That Go Bump in the Night; Vortran Torvalar presents Ray Bradbury’s The Coffin; Derry McMahon, Aoife Lorefield, & Caledonia Skytower present Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell Tale Heart; R. Crap Mariner adds Haunted One Hundred Words Stories to the mixture!

15:00: Stories at the Park

Join Caledonia Skytower, Trolley Trollop, and R. Crap Mariner for an hour of original short stories & poetry inspired by the current Art at the Park exhibition at Holly Kai Park. Just climb the steps from the landing point and just us at the Storyteller’s garden, surrounded by the art displays.

Monday October 17th, 19:00: A Spectre is Haunting Texas

Gyro Muggins concludes Fritz Leiber’s 1969 novel telling of a world in which Texas had secretly run the United States from 1845 through until the Third World War, after which the former state conquered the entire North American continent.

Of it was never given out to the general public in the states, who never had no brains or guts nohow & flustered easy, that this assumption of leadership was annexation–but it was always known to the Speaker of the House & the senators who counted in Washington that secretest treaty Texas was boss…With the coming of the 3rd World War & the atomization of Washington, New York, San Francisco & so forth, secrecy became unnecessary.

Now, Scully Christopher Crockett La Cruz an actor, fortune seeker and adventurer from the isolated orbital technocratic democracies of Circumluna & the Bubbles Congeries, has arrived in what he believes to be Canada. He’s come to reclaim family mining interests, but finds Canada is now N. Texas, ruled over by primitive, backslapping, bigger than life anti-intellectual “good ol’ boys” convinced of their own moral superiority.

S.E. Schlosser is the author of the popular “Spooky Series”, illustrated by Paul G. Hoffman, focusing on spooky tales and lore from around the United States. Join Trolley Trollop as she delves into a rich vein of tales to suit the season.

Wednesday October 19th, 19:00: The Witch’s Headstone
