Lab ramps-up for SL14B celebrations

The SL14B Shopping Event, organised by Linden Lab and open through until June 26th

Second Life’s  2017 anniversary celebrations are on the horizon, with builders all over the SL14B Community Celebration regions are busy brewing prims, moulding mesh and gluing things together in what will be a carnivalesque week of celebratory activities starting on Sunday, June 18th. And believe me, as I’ve been able to get around the regions to grab photos for the SL14B website, a lot of imagination has gone into many of this year’s builds to match the theme.

To mark the forthcoming celebrations, Linden Lab have blogged about some of the activities they are and will be running to mark SL’s 14th anniversary.

In-world Shopping Event

Currently in progress is the 14th anniversary shopping event, which runs through unto June 26th. Set out across three regions which form a huge shopping mall like environment, which wide open halls lined with shop spaces some have used very creatively (Cube Republic’s  walk through a cavern is a particularly clever use of space) the event features 60 participating merchants and creators.  In case you haven’t been, the SLurls to the regions are:

SL14B Music Festival

The third SL Birthday Music Festival, organised by Linden Lab will take place over three days of the SL14B Community Celebration, featuring everything from Italian Opera to full on Psychedelic Rock!

The dates and times (SLT) for the event are:

  • Friday, June 23rd 2017, 11:00 – 15:00
  • Saturday, June 24th 2017, 20:00 – midnight
  • Sunday, June 25th 2017, 16:00 – 20:00

The SLurl for the festival, together with the line-up of artists, will be announced soon.

Celebratory Parties

The Lab will also host two special parties at SL14B’s Cake Stage during the course of the celebrations, with a prize of L$5,000 up for grabs at each.

The Lab is hosting two parties for SL14B

The Masquerade Ball – Monday, June 19th 11:00 13:00 SLT. Be part of the mystery and intrigue of the Masked Ball. Dress to the nines, don that harlequin mask (or other suitable facial disguise) and  join your fellow celebrants at this special event. The L$5,000 will go to the person judged The Best at the Ball!

Come as You Were – Wednesday, June 21st 18:00 – 20:00 SLT. We all enter tour virtual lives as newbies, and this party looks back to those innocent days, whether yours was last week, last month or a decade ago. Simply put your best Ruth forward, as the Lab says (and also indicate your age by knowing who / what Ruth was!) and go along in costume for a chance to win L$5,000.

Celebratory Gifts

In addition to these events, the Lab will have vendors located at some of the SL14B regions, offering a special commemorative avatar and bonus gift.

Detectives, skulls, moons and ghosts

It’s time to kick-off another week of storytelling in Voice by the staff and volunteers at the Seanchai Library. As always, all times SLT, and events are held at the Library’s Second Life home at Bradley University, unless otherwise indicated.

Sunday, June 11th

13:30: The Thin Man

New York, 1932. Nick Charles, a retired west coast private detective, and his wealthy socialite wife, are in the Big Apple for Christmas. It’s a place where Nick is perfectly happy getting drunk in their hotel room or in speakeasies. Which is not to say the couple are unhappy; far from it. They enjoy witty repartee and banter with one another, and Nora is every inch Nick’s match in wit and intelligence.

Things change when Nick is visited by Dorothy Wynant, the daughter of a former client, businessman Clyde Wynant, who has apparently vanished ahead of his daughter’s wedding. Nick reluctantly – and to Nora’s amusement – agrees to find the missing businessman (the titular Thin Man). But what starts as a search for a missing man quickly turns into the hunt for a murderer after Wynant’s secretary is found dead, with all the evidence points to Wynant himself as her killer.

Corwyn Allen, John Morland, Kayden Oconnell, and Caledonia Skytower read Dashell Hammett’s 1933 classic, which became the first in a series of films following Nick and Nora’s adventures, as played by the inimitable William Powell and Myrna Loy.

15:00: Seanchai at the Kultivate Summer Show

Caledonia with Eleseren Brianna with A dyptic of tales based on “The Curio”, a virtual sculpture.

Monday, June 12th 19:00: The Book of Skulls

Gyro Muggins reads Robert Silverberg’s novel.

Four friends, college room-mates, go on a spring break trip to Arizona: Eli, the scholar, who found and translated the book; Timothy, scion of an American dynasty, born and bred to lead; Ned, poet and cynic; and Oliver, the brilliant farm boy obsessed with death.

Somewhere in the desert lies the House of Skulls, where a mystic brotherhood guards the secret of eternal life. There, the four aspirants will present themselves–and a horrific price will be demanded.

For immortality requires sacrifice. Two victims to balance two survivors. One by suicide, one by murder.

Now, beneath the gaze of grinning skulls, the terror begins. . . .

Tuesday, June 13th 19:00: More Tales from Thorton Burgess

With Faerie Maven-Pralou.

Wednesday, June 14th 19:00: The Girl Who Drank the Moon

Caledonia Skytower reads Kelly Barnhill’s 2017 Newbery Medal winner.

Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian.

Xan rescues the abandoned children and deliver them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.

One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this enmagicked girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own.

To keep young Luna safe from her own unwieldy power, Xan locks her magic deep inside her. When Luna approaches her thirteenth birthday, her magic begins to emerge on schedule–but Xan is far away. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Soon, it is up to Luna to protect those who have protected her–even if it means the end of the loving, safe world she’s always known.

BURN2 Conception 2017 announced for Second Life

The BURN2 team have announced the dates and theme for the BURN2 Conception 2017 event – and with them comes an invitation for builders to get involved.

Conception this year will take place on the weekend of Friday, July 14th through Sunday July 16th,  with the theme Take A Look Inside.

Announcing the event, the BURN2 press release reads in part:

How do we convey the need to be a Community? An Invitation, We invite someone inside.

We invite the visitor into our home and make them feel welcome. Offer them comfort, Laughter, and Sincerity. The community grows as we come together in our common areas. Think of the Piazzas of Italy, the gathering of the community on a daily basis, bonding, sharing stories, laughter and sharing time.

Those wishing to participate are invited to literally build inside the box – parcels will comprise 24m semi-transparent cubes with a 225 Land Impact allowance, in which builders are encouraged to build a welcoming environment they can invite others into, while the areas outs of the cubes will form the wider public spaces, with the press release going on to read:

The view from inside the box is transparent. Your build is showcased as a single view. Other builds are encased in their boxes so you just see the other boxes. The visitor walks and enters each box. Your invitation is important as it’s all that’s seen in clarity. Remember to build so all can be enjoyed while inside your plot. (long distant viewing is not what this event is all about).

Burn2 Conception 2016

Should you wish to apply to build for this year’s BURN2 Conception, you are asked to read (and follow) the Ten Principles of Burning Man, and the Conception 2017 Builder Guidelines before completing the application form.

Those who would like to be a greeter at the event can sign-up here.

About BURN2

BURN2 is an extension of the Burning Man festival and community into the world of Second Life. It is an officially sanctioned Burning Man regional event, and the only virtual world event out of more than 100 real world Regional groups and the only regional event allowed to burn the man.

The BURN2 Team operates events year around, culminating in an annual major festival of community, art and fire in the fall – a virtual echo of Burning Man itself.

19:00: The Wind in the Willows

Meet little Mole, wilful Ratty, Badger the perennial bachelor, and petulant Toad. Over one hundred years since their first appearance in 1908, they’ve become emblematic archetypes of eccentricity, folly, and friendship. And their misadventures – in gypsy caravans, stolen sports cars, and their Wild Wood-continue to capture readers’ imaginations and warm their hearts long after they grow up.

Begun as a series of letters from Kenneth Grahame to his son, The Wind in the Willows is a timeless tale of animal cunning and human camaraderie – although some in current times unkindly see it as a kind of allegory for the privileged ne’er-do-well upper class (in the form of Toad) with the aid of the middle class (Badger, rat and Mole) to keep the proletariat (weasels and stoats) in their place.

I suggest you join Caledonia Skytower for Magicland Storytime, and go with Mr. Grahame’s intention with the tales – as a ripping yarn for young hearts and minds.

Monday, May 29th 19:00: Architects of Hyperspace

Humour, hard science and speculative science fiction all combine in this novel by Thomas R. McDonough, who has worked with both the SETI Institute and The Planetary society.

A trio driven by personal ambitions comes together after a dying man’s last words send them in search of the secrets of a lost alien civilisation. Critic’s review:

A wonderful tongue in cheek story backed by great speculative science. The combination of the sometimes screwball comedy with the specifics of how hyperspace could work and the details of the time lags of space communication, etc, made for a believable and well-formed diegesis. There were times reading this book that I just had to stop to laugh. The book reminds me a great deal of Red Dwarf.

Join Gyro Muggins as he reads this unusual story.

Tuesday, May 30th 19:00: Old Mother West Wind

Welcome to the timeless world of the Green Forest, the laughing Brook, and the Smiling Pool. Here young readers will meet a menagerie of funny and fascinating animal friends — Peter Cottontail, Jimmy Skunk, Reddy Fox, Grandfather Frog and many more — and learn about their exciting adventures.

In this beloved classic, the first in a series of highly popular animal tales by Thornton W. Burgess, children discover the answers to such questions as why Grandfather Frog has no tail and why Jimmy Skunk wears stripes.

There’s also great fun to be had in reading or hearing about the grand goings-on at Mink’s swimming party, Little Joe Otter’s slippery slide, and Reddy Fox’s fishing expedition. These and many other adventures are told in a warm, whimsical way that combines gentle lessons about nature and wildlife with the fun of a good story.

Join Faerie Maven-Pralou to hear more from Thorton Burgess’ story.

Wednesday, May 31st 19:00: The 100 Word Stories Podcast “Dozenaversary”

Story writer, story-teller, commentator, raconteur – Crap Mariner is all of these, and more. On May 31st, 2005, after being inspired by both a friend and Woody Allen to write 100-word stories  – or “dabbles” – Crap created the 100-word Story podcast, promising to write a story a day until the day he dies.

Today, 12 years on, Crap is still writing  – and still reading his stories in what is quite probably the longest-running daily podcast of original material in the world.

Seanchai Library is therefore delighted to host the “dozenaversary” of the 100-word story podcast, with Crap reading more of his stories, which will cover a wide range of topics, just like his podcasts. There might even be a George the Pirate story in there somewhere 🙂 .
