Responding to Berry’s double threat (don’t worry, it’s a challenge!)

Music is something I enjoy in the physical world and in SL
Music is something I enjoy in the physical world and in SL

Strawberry Singh posted another Monday Meme which piqued my attention. This time ten questions have been set, each of which ask respondents to list two things (hence the “double threat” aspect).

Two online screen names you’ve had: Inara Pey is now pretty much my on-screen persona nowadays. Prior to her, I had another, which I used when writing for various D/s lifestyle websites whilst active in that community. And no, I’m not telling 😛 .

Two video games you’ve played: I’m genuinely not into video games. There’s a Wii in the house (seldom used nowadays), and the most I get up to on the computer is playing backgammon on-line occasionally (I love playing backgammon and carrom in the physical world!).

Two things you love about Second Life: You can go wherever someone’s imagination  (including your own) can take you, and you can get to share activities, interests and fun with people you might otherwise might never get to know.

Cantrip De Savor, Aloha Sunset Beach; Inara Pey, January 2015, on FlickrI love the way SL allows us to share in one another’s imaginations (location – Cantrip De Savorblog post)

Two things you’ve done in Second Life: Two things I’ve loved doing in / with Second Life are: one, learning to create stuff; and two, learning about the platform itself – how it ticks (and at times why it doesn’t), and what goes into to keeping it going.

Two things you still want to do in Second Life: Learn to script decently, and maybe get into mesh design (non-clothing).

Two things you like about your Second Life avatar: Her look and the fact she doesn’t need to spend time each day on a rowing machine to keep her figure (or is that envy?!).

Two of your Second Life Pet Peeves: One has to be the degree of negativity expressed towards LL by people who, by their own statements, tend to show they actually have zero understanding of how complex a platform SL is to develop, deliver and maintain or the costs involved in doing so.  The other is … bad regions crossings.

Two things you did as a newb that you’re embarrassed of: Only when a newb? I’m constantly doing things I’m embarrassed about 🙂 . OK, well one would be the belief I had that if I could see it on the map, I could fly to it, which no amount of bouncing at region / estate boundaries could dissuade me from. Another would be originally thinking I had to rez prim hair in-world in order to somehow adjust it to fit.

Two of your closest friends in Second Life: Spikey and Kellyanne.

Berry asked that we choose two bloved items from our inventory. I'm cheating. As I love flying and sailing / boating in SL, I'm pointing to my boats and 'planes :D

Two of the most beloved things in your inventory: My boats and planes 😀 . OK… technically that’s more than two individual items, but I  love the freedom they give me.

Stepping out with the Lindens

Wednesday, March 25th saw a further get-together between residents and folk from the Lab, hosted at the mole’s home of Meauxle Bureaux. As I originally reported, I caught sight of the meet-up when Xiola Linden tweeted about it, and was one of several bloggers who helped spread the word. Also, as I’d missed the original Meauxle Bureaux meet-up, I thought it would be fun for Maya and I to hop along, and maybe get there a little early.

And it turned out to be a good plan; with upwards of 60 people cramming into the region, it did get a tad packed. However, and as an aside, it did help me confirm the newly-repaired (and totally re-installed, software-wise) PC, with its new GTx 970 4Gb GPU is fighting fit.

Three of the early arrivals, Xiola (l), Shaman (c) and the ever colourful (and this time very tall!) Torley Linden

By the time we reached Mole Town, a few were already there (/me waves to Uccie, iSkye, Cubey and Daniel), and more quickly started popping-up, gathering around the fountains in the square. Of the Lindens, Shaman was the first to arrive, talking a moment to (presumably) change outfits at home before hopping over, by which time the organiser of the shindig, Xiola had arrived, and Shaman appeared in person not long afterwards.

From then on it started to rain people, Moles and Lindens, with the number steadily increasing to the 40 mark, then 50, then 60 … Conversations started, jokes bandied about, and a call to gather in Mole Hall was made.

News that the event was taking place had spread far and wide, so much so that the media dispatched an helicopter to report on proceedings

Here some dancing started, with Torley at the keyboards and Mozart (yes, Mozart!) providing backing, as the conversation turned to the “good old days” of Ruth, teleport hair bums, prim taxes, and more. Thoughts also turned back to Magellan Linden, the subject of earlier exchanges. Musings were aired on whether the promise of a dance and booze might be enough to tempt him out of his icy lair; although the suggestion was made that perhaps booze and cigars might get his attention more. Me, I’d already stated my view that if he were around, he’d likely be holed-up in Ye Olde Abner’s Pub, enjoying the bar to himself…

Guy, Dee, Alexa and Michael Linden had also arrived by the time people moved indoors (and doubtless a few others; I saw Oz arrived outside, but then lost track of him, and did spot Patch a little later in proceedings). A strong turn-out by members of Virtual Ability help give the meet-up a buzz, and there were surprisingly few crashes given the numbers of people present.

Ebbe managed to make the event as well, once more in casual dress after his more formal appearance at VWBPE, joining in with the conversations and posing for pictures, although as Uccie pointed out, Elvis may well have left the building in order to make room for him to get indoors!

Things moved back outside again for a gathering around the fountain to allow for selfies and other shots, and conversation (complete, apparently, with gifts from Dee Linden) continuing until the demands of office life (for the Lindens) and SL (for the residents) started to make their presence felt, and the meeting started to wind down.

If I heard Xiola correctly, it looks like these get-togethers will be a semi-regular thing (once a quarter?).   Assuming I did hear correctly, this means that if you couldn’t make this meeting for whatever reason, you’ll hopefully have the opportunity to make one in the future.

Thank you

When I started blogging, it was because I felt I needed to say something on a particular topic. Writing has always been a part of my life (although it can be somewhat slapdash in these pages as I try to get my head around multiple things!), and so I wasn’t too concerned about finding an audience, I simply wanted the means of expressing things I wanted to say on that subject.

However, few things in life stay constant, and so it has been with my blogging and virtual worlds writing, something I’ve covered numerous times elsewhere in these pages.

Recently, Strawberry Singh ran a Monday Meme asking people to write about the things Second Life has encouraged them to learn or do. For me, the it’s been a circular thing: as my blogging slowly expanded, so it encouraged me to delve deeper into Second Life – exploring, visiting art exhibitions, learning about how the platform actually works, and learn about the company that brings us this platform on a daily basis – Linden Lab. In turn, all this encouraged me to blog more, and so the circle continued.

As I’ve gone through this cycle, I’ve been fortunate enough to find other people like to read what I have to write, and have always been grateful for the support people have shown in doing so.

Today, Sunday, March 1st, I discovered that I have received the 2015 Avi Choice Award for Favourite Entertainment  / Arts SL Blog or Website (and thank you, Tina, for poking me on Twtter about it!).

I would be lying if I said I was unaware that I’d been nominated. For one thing, Arkad Baxton IM’d me to ask if he might nominate me, which was flattering enough (and again, thank you, Arkad for doing so); for another, I did receive word from the organisers as well.

However, actually winning an award was genuinely unexpected. As such, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to everyone who voted. I’d also like to thank all of you who continue to show your support for these pages by reading them and commenting on them daily, and for your support through the SL Feeds, Twitter, Plurk and so on.

Your support has, and remains, deeply appreciated, and remains the motivation for me to keep writing and covering all I can about Second Life and virtual worlds.

My congratulations also go to all of the nominees and winners in all of the Avi Choice categories.

Berry just wondered, have you ever …

T’other week, Berry did a meme about blogging. I debated doing it, as I’ve done her previous two meme on the same subject, then got sidetracked into other things, and by the time I thought about it, it was far too late in the week. so I thought that this week, I should make more of an effort.

This week she asks fifteen questions on the subject of “have you ever…?” in relation to our experiences in Second Life. Here are my responses:

Have you ever owned a sim in Second Life? – Yes.

Have you ever created content in Second Life? – Yes. Some of it is still available on SLM, but most of it is really dated and I should take it down, frankly.

Have you ever driven a vehicle in Second Life? – Err, umm ….

"Have you ever driven a vehicle in Second Life?" Possibly, possibly ... :)
Have you ever driven a vehicle in Second Life? Possibly, possibly … 🙂

Have you ever gone sky diving in Second Life? – Yes! And the lovely Strawberry Singh once joined me (and will do again, I hope!). Once upon a time I was skydiving regularly in SL, and was part of a jump team (I still have the jump suit to prove it!). I recently pulled my old skydiving launcher and landing zone out of inventory and set both up at home so I can get back into things, and offer friends a chance to try it for themselves.

Have you ever played a sport in Second Life? – Yes, competition and formation skydiving, skeet shooting, combat shooting, car racing, golf. My friend Terag encouraged me to try air pylon racing; I’d be great at it if it wasn’t for the bit about flying around a set course between pylons…

Have you ever gone clubbing in Second Life? – Wait, what? You mean some people may not have been to a club?! Jazz places remain my favourites, although I rarely go along nowadays.

Have you ever fangirled/fanboyed someone in Second Life? – Not consciously, although there are a lot of people in SL I admire a lot. I have, however, frequently been accused of being a Linden Lab fangirl 🙂 .  It’s an accusation I can more than happily live with, because the Lab might have warts here and there (and I’ll point to them when warranted) but the fact is, without the Lab, we wouldn’t have a Second Life.

Have you ever taken a picture of your avatar in water in Second Life? – Yes. I mean it’s one of the requirements of using SL, isn’t it: 😉 . And no, you’re not seeing any, as I’m largely rubbish at taking avatar photos!

Have you ever taken a picture of a sunset in Second Life? – Many times, although things often don’t turn out as I’d hoped. However, I do have one I’m particularly proud of:

Collins Land Collins Land, from September 2013 (click for full size)

Have you ever taken a nude picture of your avatar in Second Life? – Yes, most of which are rubbish. See “swimming” above.

Have you ever dated in Second Life? – Yes.

Have you ever had or attended a wedding in Second Life? – been to quite a few, had one, presided over several.

Have you ever drank, smoked or taken drugs in Second Life? – Yes, but not saying which or when 🙂 .

Have you ever engaged in sexual activity in Second Life? – Yes.

Have you ever been to Bukkake Bliss in Second Life? – No.

Blog navigation update

One of the things I’m striving to achieve within this blog is ease of access to information, be it through the way I use categories and tags for posts or through the use of the available menu options within the blog’s theme.

From time-to-time this inevitably means I tend to reshuffle and refine things in order to  – hopefully – make finding items easier. Those who regularly visit the blog may have noticed already that I’ve done so again, with a further re-vamp of the top menu.

To help you get used to the update menus, here’s quick run-down of what’s changed.

The updated menus at the top of this blog
The updated menus at the top of this blog

News and Opinion: this menu still provides access to all my “news” and “opinion” articles, all still with their own sub-menus. However, the “SL Project Updates” item has now been re-located to the new SL Tech menu – see below.

SL Tech: this is a new menu heading, and brings together:

  • My weekly SL project updates, which look at on-going server-side and viewer work
  • My on-going coverage of viewers (official and TPV) – news, reviews, etc.
  • Articles on those significant issues that have been covered in these pages
  • The various SL tutorials I’ve written, or have pulled into this blog (with the original authors’ permissions) from other sources.
My "travelogue" articles on SL destinations, and features on other virtual world have been relocated
My “travelogue” articles on SL destinations, and features on other virtual world have been relocated

Events-Reviews-Travels: This option still provides access to all my SL event previews and reviews (RFL of SL, Fantasy Faire, SLB, BURN2, etc.), and my reviews of art installations, SL products, the Drax Files, my annual reviews, etc. However, all of my travelogue features and articles on those other virtual worlds and environments can now also be found here.

General: This option now provides access to information on me, my SL interests, this blog, etc., as well as covering those things not intrinsically SL or virtual world focused: spaceflight and astronomy, VR and AR, etc.

Information related to me and the blog now appear under the General menu
Information related to me and the blog now appear under the General menu

As with previous versions of the menu system, clicking on a “main” menu topic will display the entries for all of the sub-menus listed under it (if it has a sub-menu). So, for example, if you click on SL Tech > SL Project Updates all of the project updates I’ve written will be listed chronologically (or you can use the sub-menu to display the updates written in a specific year).

Hopefully, these changes won’t confuse those who have made use of the menus, and will further assist people in finding information in these pages.

Of cliff tops and neighbours

Living on the island - the latest update sees me move the house to the south end of the island, on a plateau, and move the moorings to the north end
Living on the island – the latest update sees me move the house to the south end of the island, on a plateau, and move the moorings to the north end

We had a change recently in the little community where I now live. One of my immediate neighbours – who had been there for over two years – decided it was time to move on. As a result, her little island was up for grabs, and this being a popular location, it was long before it was snapped up.

My new neighbours – whom I’ve admittedly let to meet – set about re-working the land, and as a result got me thinking about my place.

Looking from the north end of the island and my little "marina / airport" :)
Looking from the north end of the island and my little “marina / airport” 🙂

As regular readers might know, I recently revised things at home in order to get a better fit for my burgeoning interest in SL flying and boating and to give friends room to moor their boats when visiting. While I was pleased with what I had, things still didn’t feel entirely “right”. That’s where the new neighbours come in: as a part of landscaping there island, they utilised cliff-like rock forms to assist in giving the land an elevation change, and that set a little light bulb off in my head.

Axel Bergan produces some low LI materials-enabled cliffs which are sold through Novocaine Islay under the InVerse brand. At 30×13 metres, copyable, resizeable and re-linkable and at an LI of 4 (8 if you want added vegetation on them) they represent great value. So, with my box of cliffs tucked under one arm, I set about fiddling with things.

I've kept the garden and expanded it a little. Morgan's marvellous little birds are still around as well :)
I’ve kept the garden and expanded it a little. Morgan Garret’s marvellous little birds are still around as well 🙂

Without wibbling on at great length, the outcome (which has taken the last couple of days to get sorted), is to flip the overall layout of the island around – boasts and planes now sit at the north end, the house at the southern end, elevated on a rocky plateau of cliffs. As my garden is important to me (I’m not at all green-fingered in the physical world, so I compensate for things in-world), that now sits between house and moorings, also slightly elevated above the latter, but sitting below the former, with a further small elevation sitting between it and the moorings, where I have a broad lawn and the helipad (the lawn allows me to indulge in a little SL skydiving).

The garden retains the terrace and gezebo, but the reworking has allowed me to add further flowers and wild plants. To link it with the other sections of the island “above” and “below” it, I picked up Alex Bader’s Mesh boardwalk set, and used that to create steps linking everything. As an added bonus, this also allowed me to add a little cliff top walk over a rocky promontory I added to the east side of the island, and include some additional piers for mooring the float ‘planes.

The promontory board walk & telescope

As a result of stunting things around, I also decided to retire the “frame house” I’ve occupied since moving to the USS regions. While I like the build and got the entire structure down to just 24 LI, I felt the repositioning of things warranted a change. So I pulled the Guest House out of my Fallingwater inspired build out of its box and set about re-purposing it. For some reason, the version I found dated from 2012, so needed a fair amount of work. Thanks to a little trimming and the used of convex hull, I reduced the initial LI from 109 to 44. With a little help refurnishing the house from Cory Edo,

All told, the LI for the “new” place is 885. When you consider that precisely 300 of that is boats and ‘planes, you can probably guess why I’m pleased with things. I might even leave it like this for a while!
