BURN2: Burnal Equinox 2017

BURN2 Burnal Equinox – poster via BURN2

Friday, April 28th marked the opening of the 2017 BURN2 Burnal Exquinox event, which will run through until Sunday, April 30th.

The theme for this year’s event is Scared and Profane, with the press release for the event reading in part:

What does this mean? The sacred–profane dichotomy is an idea posited by French sociologist Émile Durkheim, who considered it to be the central characteristic of religion, “Religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forbidden.”

In Durkheim’s theory, the sacred represented the interests of the group, especially unity, which were embodied in sacred group symbols, or totems. The profane, on the other hand, involved mundane individual concerns. Durkheim explicitly stated that the sacred/profane dichotomy was not equivalent to good/evil. The sacred could be good or evil, and the profane could be either as well.

Throughout the playa, is a series of builds offering various takes on the theme. As one might expect, religious symbolism is heavy throughout, together with the more “traditional” images of BURN2. Plenty of humour is also on offer – such as the Lanterns That Must Not Be Touched (but which rain carrots if they are…).

A full weekend of entertainment and festivities will be taking place through the three days of the event, which kicked-off at 10:00 SLT on Friday, April 28th with a Lamp Lighter procession. You can find full details of activities in the BURN 2 calendar, some of the highlights of which include (all times SLT):

BURN2: a Fire Moon in Second Life

 Fire Moon

Saturday, January 28th marks the start of celebrations for the Chinese New Year – so gong hei fat choy a little ahead of time, while before it, Friday, January 27th marks the first new moon of 2017. Given both of these dates, the BURN2 team have opted to host a special Fire Moon weekend from Friday January 27th through Sunday, January 29th.

Announcing the event in December, the team stated:

The pairing of the moon on fire and the fire rooster, the new year, a new beginning…such an exciting time of year! No one shall be a mere bystander; everyone participates in some way, by exploring, driving an art car, joining the Lamplighters as they walk the playa, witnessing the burning of the Fire Rooster, grooving to the tunes emanating from the stage, marvelling and experiencing the creative builds scattered throughout the playa. You become the event, with us!

Since then, builders have been at work putting together installations and ideas reflective of the Chinese New Year theme – 2017 being the Year of the Rooster – all built around the Fire Rooster, which in the tradition of BURN2 will be burned twice over the weekend. To help keep the weekend swinging, there will be live entertainment and DJs performing through the three days, at the Fire Moon main stage.

BURN2 2016: bringing Da Vinci’s Workshop to Second Life

DV-posterBURN2 2016 will be opening its gates on Saturday, October 15th, and will run through until Sunday, October 23rd 2016, culminating in the burning of the Man the Temple on the closing weekend of the event.

The theme for this year is Da Vinci;’s Workshop, which the official Burning Man website describes (in part) thus:

Burning Man’s 2016 art theme is inspired by the Italian Renaissance of the middle fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, when a historic convergence of inspired artistry, technical innovation and enlightened patronage launched Europe out of mediaevalism and into modernity. Our story will focus on the republic of Florence, for it was here, in a city-state of about the same size and population as Black Rock City, that humanist ideals, a rediscovery of science, and funding from a newly moneyed class of entrepreneurs fuelled a revolutionary cultural movement that redefined Western civilization. Five centuries later, we will attempt to recreate this potent social alchemy by combining Burning Man art, maker culture and creative philanthropy to make Black Rock City the epicentre of a new renaissance.

The plot sale is now open, as is the Plot Lottery and Juried Art Applications. You can purchase a plot for BURN2 directly from the kiosks on the playa, with parcels priced as follows:

  • 512 sq m / 117 LI – L$2,800
  • 1024 sq m / 234 LI – L$5,600
  • 208 sq m / 468 LI – L$11,200
  • 4096 sq m / 936 LI – L$22,400

Builder Guidelines and Ten Principles before you submit your application. Aesthetics mirroring the Black Rock Desert are in effect for this event.

Plots are liable to be taken fast, so as the BURN2 press release on the event states:

Get inspired by visions of Renaissance ingenuity, Medieval machinery and the artistic, eclectic, multi-gifted genius of the great Leonardo da Vinci, and bring those creations to the virtually dusty playa – come in world and get your plot reserved as soon as you can!

Volunteers are also being sought to help with greeting, building, creating, performing, dancing, and sharing the news about BURN2. BURN2 Conception: all the fun of the fair in Second Life

logoThe BURN2 team have announced the dates and theme for the 2016 BURN2 Conception event – and with them comes an invitation for builders to get involved.

Conception this year will take place on the weekend of Saturday, July 2nd and Sunday July 3rd,  with the theme All The Fun of the Fair.

Announcing the event, the BURN2 Press Release reads in part:

A long time ago, a world was conceived to let people stay in touch and interact with each other all year round, rather than just at one wonderful place once year.  The conception of this place went far beyond the original idea and its framework.

…What better way to celebrate our conception, than to show what we can create for the community at large with all the fun of the fair?  Food stands, games, rides, float parades, fireworks, let’s fill the Playa with fun and frivolity!

Those wishing to participate as builders in the event are encouraged to think along the lines of the event theme and consider building one of the following: a large ride or interactive attraction; a sideshow game of skill or chance; a small food stand; a ticket box; a parade float. The organisers note that other ideas fitting the theme might be accepted, but will need to be discussed with them beforehand.

The roller coaster can burn you up!
The roller coaster is sure to be a “hot item”!

Be warned, however! Plots are limited and will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis, so it’s better to get your application submitted sooner rather than later!  When doing so, do make sure you read the guidelines at the top of the application form; then select your choice of build type and write a description of what you have in mind. The build period is open NOW through until July 1st, so don’t be surprised if you hear back very quickly!

Those who would like to be a greeter at the event can sign-up here, and the organisers note that there may be some performer  / performance slots available, so those interested are asked to keep an eye on the BURN2 website for any details.

The PR also contains another opportunity, this one for models and skin designers:

We are issuing an open call for skin designs as well as models. Come and model your own new skin if you like, as well. Your beautiful skin design may be just the one to make someone feel less self-conscious about being bald.

All skins exhibited in the show will be gathered and distributed at this year’s Skin Burn event, so they must be full permissions. Remember this is a gifting event, full of Colour and Design. Go Crazy!

The Skin Burn Fashion show will take place on Sunday July 3rd, 2016 at 16:00 SLT, those wishing to participate should IM Daark Gothly in-world.
