Previewing The Dickens Project 2024 in Second Life

The Dickens Project, a seasonal celebration of the life, times and work of Charles Dickens with a focus on what is perhaps his most famous story, A Christmas Carol, officially opens to the public on Friday, December 6th, 2024.

Now a tradition within Second Life – the first edition of the event was held in 2012 (and which itself grew out of a special presentation originally made in 2008), the Dickens Project offers a mix of reading, storytelling, music, events and activities. It is organised and presented by Seanchai Library and offers visitors an immersive environment across two regions evocative of Victorian England in Dickens’ time. Within this settings, Seanchai Library and friends will be hosting a variety of events and activities, including readings of A Christmas Carol.

This year brings with it new features and tools to help visitors feel more immersed within the setting. These include:

  • A Personal Audio HUD (developed by Shandon Loring) and a Map HUD: (developed by Arrehn Oberlander) designed to assist guests in connecting the words of Dickens’ novella with the created environment and sorting through the many “Points of Interest” across both regions of the setting. Both will be available at the Welcome Centre and various locations around the Project. The Map HUD required accepting the Caledonian Studios SL Experience which is also used for the regions’ teleportal system.
The Dickens Project 2024 Feature Markers
  • Feature Markers to help guests discover points of engagement including task animations. These comprise:
    • The red hammers icon: indicating that here you can perform a task such as baking a pie, hammering out a horseshoe, chopping wood, weaving baskets or making gingerbread.
    • The blue camera icon: indicating a pose scene is available for you and your friends to use and take pictures.
    • The green people icon: denoting that there is a sitting action available including things like drinking tea and cakes in a shop, playing a game. There are also scenes available where you can mind a store, or a market stall, or tend a fire.

Readings and Events

The Dickens performing community is back in force this year, including opening weekend performances by Angelicus Boy Choir, the opening celebration of the Hermes Kondor art show, and a reading presentation by Poet Klannex Northmead from Dickens’ “Little Dorrit.”

These are all in addition to the live story reading programs which Seanchai Library is known for.  The popular Carol Week will begin on Friday, December 20th with a section of Dickens’ novella presented live each day in a Story Tour presentation at the sites on the estate inspired by the story.

Also returning for 2024 is the Community Virtual Library, once again providing research and information on Victorian life in the time of Dickens’ works; the Angelicus Boy Choir; the Raglan Shire Tiny Carollers; the Seanchai readers and friends, and, of course a broad range of entertainment and parties featuring DJs and live musicians from across Second Life.

The full calendar of events for the Project is provided below – note all times are SLT.

To keep up-to-date on daily events and updates, be sure to keep an eye on the Seanchai Library website.

Important Note: The Dickens Project uses several Experience-based systems including Caledonian Studios, Quantum Products, and MetaHarpers Interactive Theatre for teleportation and to enhance guests interaction. If you are prompted to join any of these Experiences during your visit, please ensure you accept them.

Dickens Project Art Show

Returning for 2024 is the Dickens Project Art Show, which is currently open (until December 16th, 2024) to submissions from artists wishing to participate.

This is a non-juried show which will formally open on December 22nd, 2024 with a special opening celebration at 11:00 SLT on that day, and will run through until January 5th, 2025. These notecards should include: the artist’s full SL Name (that is, Display Name and account name); the artist’s physical world time zone or best SL times when they can be contacted; a brief description of the piece + an artist biography; a *preview* image of the art to be submitted (i.e. a lower-resolution, thumbnail copy in order to provide the organisers with an idea of the work – not the art itself); and optional links to a related website, Flickr page, etc., for the artist.

Seanchai Library’s Bradbury Project 2024 in Second Life

Seanchai Library: The Bradbury Project 2024

October brings with it all things spooky in the run-up to Halloween. Within Second Life, this means a plethora of region designs focused on ghostly goings-on, spookiness, haunting, monsters, vampires and the like, many with associated events and activities.

One such Halloween-ish event combining exploration, activities and entertainment in a more nuanced manner, and making a return to Second Life for its second season, is Seanchai Library’s The Bradbury Project. As it’s name implies, the month-long event is a celebration of the life and work of American author Ray Bradbury (August 22, 1920 – June 5, 2012), with a focus on some of his more spooky writing.

Bradbury is perhaps best known as a science-fiction and futurist/speculative fiction author responsible for titles such as  Fahrenheit 451 (a book perhaps of special relevance currently), and his short-story collections The Martian Chronicles, and The Illustrated Man. However, he cast his writing net far wider, dipping into coming-of-age stories, screenplays, television scripts, poetry and both fantasy and dark fantasy. In the latter categories we have (the semi-autobiographical) Something Wicked This Way Comes, and The Halloween Tree.

The Halloween Tree

The latter is the story of eight boys as they attempt to rescue their friend on Halloween night. Under the guidance of the mysterious Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud, they travel through time and space, learning about different cultures, and the role that the fear of death, ghosts and hauntings has played in shaping civilisations down the ages, and how it has all contributed to much that is encompassed in modern-day Halloween activities. It’s is also one of the focal elements of The Bradbury Project.

In 2023, the project took place on sky builds within Seanchai Library’s home region of Nowhereville. For 2024, and thanks to the support of Linden Lab, the event expands into a dedicated Full region, allowing for more space for activities. However, like 2023, all donations / tips received while the Project is open through until Sunday, November 3rd, will be donated to Reading is Fundamental.

A major feature of Bradbury’s writing is Green Town, a fictionalised version of his place of birth, Waukegan, Illinois. It is a place of safety and home, featuring in a number Bradbury’s darker tales and in his short stories, and which has a result is depicted at several different points in the 20th century. Green Town is also the starting point for The Bradbury Project, which offers aspects of Green Town as it might have appeared in the 1950s.

Visitor arriving within the Project will find themselves within the garage of one of the houses lining Green Town’s main street. This offers information boards about the Project and the planned events, as well as information on the two Second Life Experiences operating within the region – both of these should be accepted in order to enjoy the Project to the fullest; however, if you an unsettled by the idea of using Experiences, a box of landmarks can also be obtained from the landing point to ferry you around.

Seanchai Library: The Bradbury Project 2024

A wander around the town will reveal its charm and also some points of interest – information boards that provide more insight into Bradbury’s life and work, and other interactive pieces (such as a television presenting the short film The House I Live In, which whilst not in any way focused on Halloween or the like, nevertheless carries a message of relevance).

Cutting through the region from east to west is the Ravine from Dandelion Wine, a collection sf short stories, and which is considered to be Bradbury’s most personal work. The Ravine can be accessed from the town at its eastern end , beyond the railway tracks, were a path slopes down into it. looping  back under the railway bridge, the path will take visitors through the Ravine and up the far side to the residence of Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud, esq., and the Halloween Tree. Here again, indoors and out, is more to explore.

A Spoonful of Sugar 2024 in Second Life

via Spoonful of Sugar 2024

Now open through until Sunday, September 22nd, 2024 (inclusive) in Second Life is the 2024 edition of the Spoonful of Sugar festival in support of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the globe-spanning non-profit organisation delivering emergency and humanitarian aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and similar.

Also known as Doctors Without Borders, MSF was originally founded in Paris, France in 1971 and is entirely self-governing; the support and treatment it provides is given on the basis of need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. It is often one of the first organisations to have feet on the ground wherever and whenever humanitarian aid and medical support is desperately needed, and since its founding, MSF has grown to a movement of 24 associations, bound together as MSF International, now based in Switzerland. Thousands of health professionals, logistical and administrative staff – most of whom are hired locally in respect of the care they give around the world – work on programmes in some 70 countries worldwide to provide medical and social care & support for a staggering 10+ million people annually.

Since its own establishment, the SOS event has raised more than US $100,000 for MSF’s global work, in keeping with its mission statement.

We believe the simplest form of compassion is to simply care for the life of another. And we believe medical care to be the most fundamentally basic means by which to do that.

– The Spoonful Of Sugar Festival Mission Statement

Spoonful of Sugar 2024 (September 7th-22nd)

This year, SOS is taking place across a total of six regions with the theme of En France!, with five of the six regions very much focused on MSF’s founding city of Paris. Four of these regions present the core shopping elements to the event, each one presented as scene featuring the kind of French townhouses and business façades found along places like the Champs-Élysées, surrounding a central area representative of I. M. Pei’s glass-and-metal Louvre Pyramid, located in the Palace’s Cour Napoléon.

With pairs of these regions sitting to either side, the two central regions are more open in their design. The first forms the main landing point and activities venue for SOS, and is dominated by the Eiffel Tower and the park below it, into which has also been placed a giant Ferris wheel, which I take as representing the 60-metre wheel at the Tuileries Gardens. This region – SOS Uber Global – is connected to two of the shopping regions by bridges, with a further bridge connecting it to the other central region in the group.

The latter is mindful of rural France, and is home to various spaces given over to breedables, landscaping and gardening – and most notably, a special 10th anniversary art display presented by Harmonic Sanctuary, founded and operated by Harlow Jones Blues (harlowjones) and Jess Blues (JessBlues).

Une Célébration Du Pays Basque, spoonful of Sugar 2024 (September 7th-22nd)

Une Célébration Du Pays Basque “takes you on a journey through the stunning landscapes and rich culture of the Basque region of France”. Centred on a watermill similar to those which might found in the region, and here offered and in homage to Jess’ father, who was born in such a building. The exhibition offers a rich and engaging collection of images in celebration of the French Basque region – the landscape, the people and the lifestyle, with an additional display of art located in the cave to one side of the gallery building.

Beyond this, the setting continues as a place to explore and spend time within, and I recommended taking time to pick up a note card from the information board at the gallery’s landing point. It contains a wealth of information that’s worth the time taken to read it – and remember that much of the art (produced by Jess and Harlow) is offered for sale exclusively at SOS, with a goodly portion of the cost going directly to the event.

Spoonful of Sugar 2024 (September 7th-22nd)

The best way to find out about all that’s going on at SOS 2024 and which stores are where within the region is via the official website, where you can find the schedule of entertainment, and the region list page with SLurls directly to all stores and points of interest. The base of the Eiffel Tower is the location for the event’s raffle, and also a place where Animesh mime artists can be found performing (this is Paris, after all!), with a select of low-cost items with 100% of all proceeds going to the event right next to them. I didn’t notice any hunt this year – but might have missed it in my travels.

As always, Spoonful of Sugar is an event well worth visiting. Even if you don’t find anything to buy in the shopping regions, the donation kiosks will welcome your Linden dollars, and you can be absolutely sure that your money is going to a very worthy cause.
